IN mid-July someone pushed DD into a pool. She heard a loud pop and had a lot of pain. I took her to the urgent care, got it xrayed and they didn't see anything. It was black & blue for 3 weeks, but she stopped limping and seemed to be okay.Well, school started 10 days ago and I guess all the walking has inflamed the foot. It's swollen and tender and she has to ice it every day now. So today we took her to an orthopedist and sure enough, there's a fracture. She has to be off the foot for 3 weeks.

OMG, she is so upset! She's going to burst into tears any moment. DD is heavily involved in her show choir at school and she takes dance on the side. She's also the student choreographer for her show choir and teaches a dance class for special needs teens. All told, she dances probably about 25hrs/ week. THe worst part is, if she can't rehearse with the show choir, the director will write her out of the fall show!:scared1: This is her LAST fall show so it's more important than ever that she be in it. I'll be contacting him in the morning. Hopefully, he will allow her to attend rehearsals and participate where she can.

I feel so bad for her. She just looked at me and cried, 'MOM! I"m a DANCER! I CANT have a broken foot!" This is breaking my heart.

I saw your post and my first thought was "oh noooooo". It seems your dd had the same thought.

She is down--but not out. Maybe she can perform like Artie in Glee...in a wheelchair for the show choir.:confused3:confused3

I hope something can be worked out. I wonder if teacher must accomodate for a temporary disability.:confused3 Just seems so harsh to cut someone.

I hope so, but I don't know. He has a policy that if a dancer misses even ONE rehearsal, for any reason, excused or unexcused, they are written out of the dances rehearsed that day. There are no do-overs. So, these kids will drag their half-dead selves to school to just not get cut from their show. Last year, one of the higher ranking dancers had to miss a rehearsal. In one afternoon, DD went from chorusline to duet. Of course, she felt bad for the other girl (a friend of hers) but she was thrilled to get the duet with just about the cutest senior boy in the whole school. And they were great together!

I don't know how bad your daughter's injury is but because the ankle and foot is such a delicate thing and an injury can cause life long issues, think about taking your daughter to a foot/ankle specialist.

I'm going through this now. I hurt my ankle several months ago and know have to see an ankle/foot specialist due to the injury and previous injury that wasn't treated correctly.

I hope your daughter feels better soon. If she hasn't tried it, PT has really helped get the inflammation down in my ankle.

Is the bone still fractured??? Was it displaced at all? I would take her into an orthopedic doctor ASAP given she is a dancer and wants a career in dance. For most of us this might not be a big deal but for her, this could be career ending if it doesn't heel right.

We had some friends who's son broke a bone in his foot one summer, thought it healed, had problems about 1/2 way through cross country season, ended up having surgery in December, had issues through his first year in college and ended up not being able to run any more.

oh my thoughts are with her.. I broke my foot end of July.. had surgery 1 week ago Monday, cant drive must sit and ice.. it is a bummer..

but i have a scooter , i rented it and it has helped my mobilty..crutches are the worst imho...

hope she can dance..but i would see a specialist just to be sure..

For all of the above reasons, we *did* take her to a sports medicine foot/ankle specialist, on of the best in Atlanta. Its the same guy that I take my foot to. He works on some of the Braves players and several of the Hawks, too.

My DH took her to the doctor, so I don't have all the dope(and he is fairly clueless about medical things) but from what I understand there is a fracture in one of the small bones in the main body of the foot. It is not displaced. SHe has to wear the walking boot for 3 weeks, 24hrs a day.She cannot dance or work out on the treadmill--upper body only. They will re-xray in September. If the fracture has not healed properly, they will have to do surgery to rebreak the bone and put some screws in. Pray that it doesn't come to that. DD is VERY motivated to stay off this foot as much as possible.

I've already contacted her show choir director and I've written a note to her school requesting that she be allowed extra time between classes and to navigate lunch--they only get about 4 minutes between classes and it is fully 1/4 mile from one end of the school to the other. I don't think she needs to be in a wheelchair(she would die!) but we may have to do that if she can't manage going up and down the stairs with this big old boot.
