OH MY GOD, WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!!! A principal with common sense. You better make sure you never lose him.

I know! I'm so impressed that this was handled the way it was!

When I was subbing, I was in a classroom where a girl attacked a boy. Now, he was a big scrapping kid and could have pummeled her to the ground, but instead, he ran away. Literally ran right out of the classroom, down the hallway and didn't do anything to defend himself.

He got suspended for as long as she did. Absolutely ridiculous. That was the same administration that my own son had so many problems with. It was that and a few other incidents that made me lose all trust in their point of view.

DS seem to be feeling better this morning. He did choose to take the bus to school. We do not know what the punishment was for the other kid yet, though Im sure he may hear through gossip today.

For those that say to do a police report, it is my understanding that because they have a police officer stationed at the school, and the seriousness of the act, that a report is mandatory and automatic by them. We have yet to be contacted by the officer, so still waiting on that but it will be done.

When we were discussing things last night, I asked him how he felt about what he did instead of using violence to fight back and he said, "but I did win, he's the one that got in big trouble and I get to keep my xbox".

So there it is... The real reason he did what he was supposed to do, he was worried he would get in trouble and the xbox would be history... only my kid...

I will say that it is currently helping my dd fend off the bullies in 7th grade right now. She even mentioned this the other day.

We have taught her how to "bring it" if that makes sense and use psychology instead of "threats". It also helps that she is pretty quick thinking on her feet.

Her friend who is just so nice and not mean in anyway is having trouble coping with the comments that the kids throw at her. My dd is trying to show her how to wrangle the bullies. Now my dd will seek help from teacher/counselor if the kids cross the line and she has done so already.

That is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. Unreal. Its almost like they dont want to even DO their jobs.

Smart kid!! Very funny about the xbox. I can honestly say that my son might think about what he could lose prior to taking action as well. I guess parents with 'collateral' is a good thing! I'm glad he felt comfortable taking the bus this morning.

If there is a report then there will absolutely positively be a report number. If they can't provide you with a number then they did not file the report. I like police officers but they are human and are just as likely to avoid work as everyone else. Filing a report is a pain so it often goes undone. There will be no harm for you to call the precinct and ask for a copy of the report and the report number, you should be able to stop in and pick it up. If the officer filed it you'll be able to see exactly what was written, but if the officer did not (more likely) then this will serve as a gentle reminder to get the paperwork into the office.

My neighbor's son got beat up on the way home from school last year. The kid had been picking on him for a while and it escalated when the neighbor's son started to stand up for him himself. He was walking home ( not on school property but on just off) and the other kid jumped him, knocked him down and kicked him and punched him. The VP was at the top of the road and saw it and broke it and took the kid back to school. The neighbor walked home.( we live 2 seconds from school) When he got home he didnt tell his parents but thankfully the school called to check on him. He was beat up pretty bad. black eye, cut on his head/face, broken glasses, ripped jeans, coat, backpack and lunch tote. The school called the police because of they have a resource officer on site who came down and took pictures and wrote up the report. He also made them take him to his doctor. The VP called that night and told the parents that the kid who beat him up said that her son started it by kicking him at school that day. Thankfully there were witnesses and it came out the bully pinned my neighbor face first against his locker and my neighbor pushed him off with his foot. They had to go to court. The bully was charged with Assault with a deadly weapon ( his boot). He had to pay all of the medical bills and for the glasses, jeans and bags. Close to $400. My neighbor asked the judge to keep it off the kids permanent record but the kid still had to do commnuity service and has 2 years probation.

I'm glad the bully's family had to pay the expenses and that the bully had to do community service.

OP, even though a report was made, it is left up to you to file charges. A report can be made and nothing come of it. You need to file the charges, because you had to take your son to the doctor. The kids parents should have to pay that bill. I'm not a go to the police kind of gal, but in this case, your son had damages and the other kid should have to pay a bit more than a suspension. He probably wants to be at home all day, anyway.

Maybe the insurance company could decide to sue. I am not sure of their recourse, but I have seen insurance companies sue for re-compensation many times (work in the industry)...

I saw something like this on People's Court once. They were allowed to sue for it, but legally they had to reimburse the insurance company for what they paid.

What about a co-pay, or any out of pocket expense? Insurance companies limit how much they will pay out over the life of a policy--this payment certainly takes from that amount. The OP's family should not have to have any loss because of this kid's decision to pummel her son.
