Okay we are studying his poem "The Panther" in English class.

I think I could have made this poem in like 2nd grade. The way he makes up words so they will fit better is odd. And yes I know, poets do do this to have something make sense. But...

I have read many many of his other poems too and I do not think he is worthy of his title.

Dicuss Ogden Nash.

Hmm, I never had to study him, maybe if you put some of his works on here I could try and help you out.

Im not to fond of 'old' poetry as it all seems to be unworthy of my time and energy, I am more fond of modern poetry. Im guessing this is older poetry?

Off topic: Has anybody had to read the Great Gatsby? I have to read three chapters by wed. and I really have no desire once so ever to read it.. sigh, I guess it will be better then the Scarlet Letter. :crazy2:

The Ant

The ant has made himself illustrious
Through constant industry industrious.
So what?
Would you be calm and placid
If you were full of formic acid?

The Celery

Celery, raw
Develops the jaw,
But celery, stewed,
Is more quietly chewed.

The Cow

The cow is of the bovine ilk;
One end is moo, the other, milk.

Furthe Reflections on Parsley

Parsley
Is gharsley.

The Panther

The panther is like a leopard
Except it hasn't been peppered
If you were to face a panther crouch
Prepare to say Ouch
Better yet, if approached by a panther
Dont anther

So as you can see it is not old paetry at all. Just completly ridiculous.

By old poetry do you mean like Shakespeare? Emily Dickinson? Elizabeth Barret Browning?

Yes i mean old as in anything really before the 1900's. Wow. that is the worst, most meaningless poetry I have ever seen. How is he even worth studying? There is no hidden meaning, nor meaning at all to his poems. They are.. are.. utterly repulsive.:confused3

So you truly believe that Shakespeare is not worthy of your time and energy?

Or Homer, Virgil, or Ovid?

I was not implying that, Shakespeare is pure and full of so many things to not be worth my time. I find Shakespeare very interesting, although modern writing is more in my takes of interest. But, that is beside the point, I was implying that the poet that she was studying was not worth time or energy as he was completely a replusive poet, and does not deserve the title of a poet.

I'm going to have to agree and say that the Georgics really wasn't that interesting. Some parts were worth reading just for the political references, though.

The Aeneid makes up for it 10-fold. I would say that it's better than Homer's works (It was a tough call, though).

Well I will have to finish reading it.

I really do love Homer's works. As well as Shakespeare, although I think Romeo and Juliet was his worst piece of work.

I don't like Romeo and Juliet, but I wouldn't say it was his worst.

I hate Love's Labours Lost the most. I cannot stand to read a scene of that play.

Edit: Have you read The Merchant of Venice?

I just think Romeo and Juliet doesn't show off his true talent.

I actually have not read the Merchant of Venice I've been meaning oto and actually have a copy in my purse I just have not gotten to it. Is it any good?

OH YES

I would go as far as to say that it's my favorite of his plays. In my opinion, it's the most powerful (emotionally, and all that).

I shant ruin it for you, though.

You shant not! haha...

okay I will probably start it tomorrow. I am really excited now. :)

I more of a Shel Silverstein kind of girl :)

Just curious, I realize this is way off topic, but has anybody read the book Finn? The book is based off of Huck Finn, but in the father's perspective. It practically just came out, our english teacher is reading it now, and talks about what a great, yet very dark book it is. I really want to check it out.
