Yesterday afternoon, I got a yahoo email supposedly from Paypal asking me to reverify myself. (It looked legit, and I should know better).

I stupidly provided my credit card, DOB, SS#, password, etc....

So today, I've cancelled the credit card, changed PWs, etc... but the one I'm really worried about is the SS#.

I called Trans Union fraud number, and put a fraud alert on my SS#.

Am I missing anything?

Help, and pixie dust please....

So far no bad charges or loans found....

Goldi

FYI - I've called Paypal and both Yahoo to ask if this was a legit email, and neither one could look it up to tell me.

EBAYers, beware !!!

I'm so sorry...I don't have any advice. I have been getting bogus emails from "Paypal" also....and I KNOW I've never used their service. I just delete them and am on the verge of updating my email address.

Good luck!!!

I don't have much advice, just a big  Those people are very smart, don't feel bad for falling for it, just make sure and tell everyone you can that this happened as a warning to be aware. It can and does happen.

I would contact the Social Security Dept. and see what they say about it.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you! It probably was a bogus email...I have received them from PayPal too. If you can forward the original email to spoof@paypal.com they can investigate it. It may be worth your while to contact the Attorney General's office in your state. They may be able to help you! Don't get rid of the original email just in case there is some problem with identity theft. THere are ways that the origin of the email can be traced. Good luck! :worried:

A friend of mine just came into the office and said she got an email alerting her to another scam. Her DH is stationed in Iraq. People are calling military families and telling them that their SO has been killed. In their grief and confusion, family members giving the callers personal and financial information.

How horrible.

Be careful everyone!

goldilocks - I hope all goes well for you. I can't think of anything else you could do.

I'm sorry you have to go thru this.

You'll also need to call Equifax and Experian and put fraud warnings on those as well.

Next, I suggest you get privacy guard. With it you can monitor your credit report instantly and if something does show up, such as inquiries etc, you'll be able to catch it quickly. Privacy guard runs a free trial so check it out at privacyguard.com

Good luck. I know what you're going thru, cause DH and I have been victims of ID theft, and it's not easy to clean up the mess.

You may want to call the other major credit reporting agencies as well.
Equifax 1-800-525-6285

Experian 1-800-879-3752

Also, you should call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-269- 0271

Hope this helps, it should cover all the major basis. Good Luck!!!

goldilocks,

There are three major credit bureau reporting agencies that you should contact. I have encluded their information below. Also, here is a link to the Federal Trade Commission's "Recovering From ID Theft". Hopefully it won't come to that. The things that you have already done are VERY smart! Kudos to you for your quick action! ::yes::

 I never really gave it much thought, but that is something that should be gone over in a predeployment briefing......how family members are notified in the event of a death. Exactly what was the reason for them giving financial information? I'd like to hear that one

I'm working on the suggestions you gave me.

THanks for the kind words.... I really, really feel so violated, and worse, stupid.

Hope I escape this one....

goldilocks_63 oh im sorry to hear this happened to you, i have heard if you get emails asking for info you should not doit thru the emails but instead go the websites and see if they really need your info.

Maybe it was legit? I think you did the right thing by reporting it.:D

That sort of information via e-mail is never legit. I got a warning from my bank today about spoof websites.
