We were going to wait until a few days before our trip (May 11) to order them but then occurred to me that prices could potentially go up sometime in May, so we went ahead and ordered last night!! I can't wait to get my card!!

WELP that's enough to make me consider getting them tonight. They don't "start" until you use them at the gate, right?

(And if you have etickets you just go to the gate and into the park, right?)

My understanding is yes, you just take your printed ticket right to the gate!

We bought our passes a few months before we used them back in 2012 when people were thinking prices would go up before our May trip. Our first day in the parks we arrived mid afternoon, so there was no one at the ticket booth so we did the whole exchange for our passes there and even though there was no line - to do up 5 passes still took about 10 minutes.

It's something you do have to do eventually - so I'd suggest when ticket booth lines are short.

You can buy them now and take till December 31st to activate them if you wish - and yes, the clock starts ticking when you either trade them in at the booth or go through the gate with the eTicket.

Another question - can I not add my passes to my Disney profile until they're activated? I just tried and it says the number is not valid - I copied the one under the barcode.

Woohoo!! Congratulations!! Hope you get lots of use out of them!!
We will hopefully be joining the ranks as pass holders sometime in the next year. Unfortunately for me, when we had our money saved up and were days away from purchasing, our central air conditioning unit died! And in the desert its an absolute must to replace!

You need the actual pass # to add to your profile - so no, not unitl you have your plastic card.
