Officially Freaked Out by Photopass

Since I am in the minority here I will not be posting to this thread again. Sorry it is a little freaky that Disney knows where you are at every second. Last time I checked we are still able to voice on this board the good and the bad.

For the record I don't do Facebook either. Not interesting to me to post or read Facebook.

I could careless about other people's pictures being in my account that is not what I or the OP was saying.

What's freaky about it? Let's just say, for all intensive purposesthey do know where you are, what's the big deal?

Why do you think Disney cares where you are?

I do understand in a weird way the concern of privacy trust me I do but I think the area of not having a camera or gps locator on you somewhere somehow is over. I do understand though that people at least like to feel like no ones watching them, when they are from social media your everywhere!

Just by clicking on your screen name, I can see your date of birth, your age, and your gender. And, if "Chitown" refers to Chicago, then you undoubtedly know that Chicago uses Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) that track plate numbers, times, and locations. (Even if you're not from Chicago, there's a good chance that your community uses these or you pass through them if you drive.) All that info is stored in a big database.

You don't drive? Then the CTA or Metra is tracking you based on where you swipe your card.

With the advances of facial recognition software, soon walking and bike riding will be traceable.

Guess you are't reading this any more but sure you can post your opinion, good or bad. Just got to be prepared to handle it if the masses don't agree with you.

paranoid? Then don't run yourself on zabasearch.com. As police officers, we are very freaky about privacy and not wanting the bad guys to know where we live. A search of my husband's name brought up our home address...and a photo of our house with his cruiser in the driveway.

nothing Disney does can unnerve us after that.

You obviously have no clue as to how analytics work or predictive patterns developed from software programs.

The bathroom is the easiest to explain because most people understand that their health records are private information. Disney can use the data derived from the knowing where you ate to the frequency / length of time in a rest room and extrapolate that after 100 people ate the chili fries at Peco's bill for lunch, later in the day 89 of those 100 then spent a disproportionate amount of time in a rest room compared to the other persons coming and going at that time. Will they use that info to double check their food handling or try and sell you some Pepto Bismal?

Or over the span of a 7 day trip, they would know, without virtually any doubt, who had IBS for example.

It's the exact same way Target knows when you are pregnant and haven't told anyone yet, in fact Target may know you are pregnant before you do, this story is with 3 year old tech and only from in store purchases- http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmir...teen-girl-was-pregnant-before-her-father-did/

Target is from a much less intensive collection pool, not from tracking every single thing you do 24/7 for a week.

Why would Disney care about Joe Blow from Idaho? $$$$$$ MONEY $$$$$ Disney is in the business of making money, lots of it. Their "partners" extend well beyond photopass and reach under under the behemoth umbrella of ABC.

So you don't care about Disney selling you bathroom usage to an insurance company, there is also the fact that nothing is unhackable and all that data can be stolen and used for much more vicious purposes than selling that info to even larger processing centers overseas without even the minimal oversight and laws here in the US about this data.

After knowing all this, I still have used MB's twice however I have made an informed decision on the matter. The ignorance surrounding this topic is astounding, I've never seen so many head in the sand, everything is hunkydory jibberish nonsense in my life.

I think Disney had changed quite a bit. It is more about making profit than people having a good time.
There are RFID everywhere so they know every step you take no matter if you get pictures als well.
The private citizen is an Illusion anyway but I would still complain to the company

Disney is 100% concerned with making a profit, but I don't think it's a change. They are a business and it is their goal to be profitable.

I genuinely like to read everyone's preferences, especially when it is contrary to my own ... as is the case here. I am genuinely curious and would love to hear someone explain what they think is "creepy" about the process of tracking people with the magic bands while they are on property. Is it just a gut feeling, which I can totally understand? Or is there something that is a specific concern?

While Disney *can* do all of this with the technology at hand, do you really think they are doing it? Do you really think they care how long You (specific, not general) spend in the bathroom? Or that it correlates to what you ate? The info is there when and if they need it, but they have bigger fish to profit from than crunching the data on pooping just so they can sell you some Pepto.

Disney knows what you are doing every second. I am sorry but I did not like or what they could do with the info.

What could they do that has you freaked out? You must have some solid thoughts.

no 1984, no big brother.... its simply a massive deluxe data mining tool to sell you more mickey crap.

Agreed.

I could careless about other people's pictures being in my account that is not what I or the OP was saying.

Actually it is a big part of what the op was saying.

HOWEVER, the BIGGER issue is that while they did properly identify us in many pictures, there were also lots of pictures that were of other families. I can only assume that means that strangers now have pictures of my family (and more specifically, my young children) as well.

Now in her case she's noticing that because strangers are in her account, strangers might have her family in their account. They might. But then she thinks that even though she reacts with annoyance at the strangers in her account, the strangers with her family's pictures will now do...who knows what...with the pictures of her family. It's still based on the computer making a mistake or having a lag in posting.

I understand the point of the OP, I was just adding my point of view. I realize that a lot of today's technology tracks you, legally and otherwise, but a lot of that I buy knowing the possibilities of tracking and keeping up with me. I don't expect to go to Disney, on their property and not me subjected to their policies, whatever they may be. I know that if I had been in the park and say (for example) one of my DD was kidnapped, you can be sure that I would be all over Disney wanting to see their camera footage wanting to know where she was last seen in the park and who she was with, and I also bet all of y'all would want this info then. I know this doesn't happen, but if it did. I also realize that the main reason Disney does this is for their benefit, it does make it a lot more convenient for their guest for a whole lot of reason, but in the end, it's for their benefit, what we spend our money on, traffic flow, a lot of reasons.

You don't need to use the MB if it bothers you. You can just use the plastic RFID card. It'll still scan at rides and tapstiles, but it won't identify you on rides ... If you want a Ride photo, you can tap your card to the mickey head under the screen where your photo is.

We were there in March and just received a message from photo pass. We didn't purchase photo pass. There were pictures of us on rides for purchase. We didnt have magic bands only plastic ticket. It's a little unsettling.

You had a plastic photo pass card? Or you have your RFID ticket to a photographer to scan?
You're not saying that you never scanned your card for a photo, never used a MB, but pictures of you arrived in an email anyway - right? I'm pretty sure that's not possible.

Both sides have been represented. The Tin Foil Hat crowd and the Head in the Sand crowd
I'm between the 2 personally. I don't think everything is tracked and ignored but I don't think they are after my bathroom habits either.

The plastic tickets can not link to the Ride Photos
Now, everyone riding does have a photo taken, MB or Plastic tickets.
If you buy a plastic ticket and have an MDE account then it may just automatically email you a canned email, if you link the 2 somehow
Does bring up a question, do the day visitors who buy plastic tickets at the gate, never purchasing MB, have to make an MDE account to book FP once they enter the parks?

Eh, I can see how it would be a bit disconcerting to see the ride pics and photos if you weren't expecting it, but it actually makes my life easier, so I am thrilled about it. Sure Disney knows where I am every second, but I'm pretty sure the student loan people do, too. :lmao: I figure if anyone really cares enough to want to know about me, chances are it's already out there for a tech savvy person to find. Anyone stalking me will be disappointed. They'll find out I'm a huge nerd, and I have no life outside of grad school and work. Riveting stuff for them, I'm sure. Re: our kids' pics - I totally get that protective instinct. But I think about all those photo releases we always have to sign at school events. I signed one and my kid ended up in an advertisement for the school on a billboard on Interstate 65. Was I surprised and a little weirded out? Heck yeah I was. Totally didn't expect that, but I signed the form, so it was a possibility I let myself in for. I could have opted out, but I wanted him to be in the pics so I could get the copies. Some people probably find it strange, but I am not adverse to giving up a little bit of privacy (which these days is more of an illusion than anything else) for convenience.

I have had pictures show up that were not mine with the original photo pass and now with FP+. I don't care so much if others are in mine, even if it's a bit annoying. All the more power to them for tracking me on property. Maybe one day I'll be deciding if I will get a shirt or not at Magic Kingdom and when I walk away deciding against it, I'll suddenly get a notification for 20% off the item. I'm good with that :) Then if I don't go back for it within 5 minutes maybe they will send me a further inciting deal of 30% off ;)

If anything this actually makes me feel a bit better about the $170 I dropped on Magic Memories or Photo Pass or whatever its called now. Lord knows I'd forget to scan my band half of the time, so if they can do that automatically at least I know I might get my money's worth out of it.

We did not have MM or Photo Pass. We did have our plastic ticket (no Magic Band) and we did have a MDE account for a few FP's. I was just surprised to see photos arrive by email. I thought that happened when you purchased the Photo packages.
