Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

Higdon has a marathon training plan he calls Novice Supreme. It's a 30 week plan and starts at 9-10 miles per week. It tops out with 1 20 mile run a few weeks before the race. For those who are questioning being able to complete a full, take a look at his plan and see if this training is doable. With 32 weeks before the race, it's perfect timing.

The only issue I see is that I had ToT on Sept 29th, so I am trying to figure out how to rework these so that I can work that in. I found a website that fill in your iCal with all of the Higdon plans based on your race date. It had two different 18 week programs, a 24 week program that has way too much cross training for my schedule (2 30 minute sessions are fine, this one has 75 minute sessions), and the 30 week plan.

I guess I could follow Galloway up to 10 miles then switch.

Okay..need some encouragement! I just read a book (maybe I should start reading!) that said you should not start marathon training unless you have been running for a year and logging 25 miles each week!

I've been running about 11 months (so more than a year when the training program starts), but 25 miles a week?? Even on weeks I am running a half marathon, I only do about 20 (two 3 mile runs and the 14 mile run at the height of training). When not training, I've been running about 7-10 a week, less a few busy weeks.

Someone send me positive thoughts!

I think you'll be fine. :thumbsup2

I started running in January of 2008. At that point, I literally could not run a mile, so I'd run as far as I could, and then I'd walk. Each time I went out for a run, I'd go a little bit further than the time before. In August/Sept, I mapped out a training plan based on one of Hal Higdon's novice plans. I ran the 2009 WDW Marathon - exactly one year from when I started running. Since then, I've run 2 marathons and hoping to run again this January (if I can keep my annoying plantar fasciitis at bay).

Best of luck to you! :goodvibes

The funny thing is that this IS how I started running. "Disney World has a Half Marathon? I can't even run a mile? Sign me up right away!" :lmao:

Amanda

That video is great!! WDW is the only place you could get me to do a marathon, too!!

We registered for one of the runs and was told after that there is a really good discount on rooms and park tickets and you'll be emailed a link to purchase them. I never got one did anyone else?

Thanks!

Patty

Ever since the Princess 1/2, DH has been refusing any and all requests to run the marathon. I get the "it's not doable right now, no money, blah blah blah" excuses. Yesterday out of the blue, he asked about the marathon and the Goofy challenge. I think he might be up for it. :yay:

I'm going to get in tons of training as we've been doing one 10K per month and in October I'll be running the Diva 1/2 and the Rock n Roll NY 10k in the same week plus we might do the Zombie Run two weeks after that.

I hope he still goes for this!! I so want to do this!

I'm jumping in on this thread. My name is Diane, I'm from NJ and doing the WDW Marathon in 2013 --- it'll be my first! I've been on a weight loss/getting healthy path for almost 2 years now. I've lost 75 pounds and running has become a critical component to getting healthy and enjoying the journey. I did my first 1/2 Marathon in NJ this past April...the Unite Half Marathon at Rutgers. It was wonderful, and I feel ready to push myself to try the full.

I'm loving this board and reading all the experiences....

Ciao for now.....Diane

I didn't get anything. :confused3 I remember someone posted a link to discount tickets here last year. As for rooms, I'm hoping they'll release some good general/AP discounts sometime in the fall.

Yay! :yay: You need to find some marathon pictures or YouTube videos to show him. I hope you can convince him!

Wow, congrats on the weight loss! :worship: That is awesome! I'm sure it makes running much easier. :thumbsup2

You'll love the WDW Full...great first marathon.

QUESTION (okay, 2 of them):

1. Do we know when Disney normally announces the 5K theme?

and...just for fun since this is a sort of stupid question ...

2. Any guesses on the 5K theme?

I'm considering signing up for the 5K but would sort of like to wait for the theme to be announced before I pull the trigger. Perhaps it will be Brave-themed? :confused3

Sadly there aren't many discounts for marathon weekend (Outside of the Disney Visa card discount.) Most of the other rundisney races have special tickets rates, but nothing for the general running population during marathon weekend. Charity runners get a pretty good deal, so if you know anyone running for charity you might ask if they know anything.

I want to say the theme was announced in October last year because that is when I signed up.

Yep...although once you get there, you CAN get discounts on official race merchandise at the expo (annual pass or Disney Visa for sure, not sure if any others are out there).

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought. :thumbsup2

That makes sense...Brave. I would like that, and at least with UP, they used that for a theme when it was fairly new. I was waiting a little to sign up, too, for that reason. I was just telling my running buddy, that after DNF'ing Goofy/Dopey last year, I was fine with just the Goofy, but he already signed up for the 5K, so I guess I'm in, too. What's 3 more miles? :goodvibes

So...to add on...what have the 5K themes been?

I know Lilo and Stitch maybe in 2003??
Jungle something with the Fab Five in 2008? (Animal Kingdom)
Up in 2010.
Three Caballeros in 2012.

Just the Goofy? :rotfl:

But yeah, I'm with you on the "what's another 3 miles" line of thinking...:scratchin

Buzz & Woody's Best Friends in 2011 (to go along with Toy Story 3)

Thanks! Now that you mention it I remember seeing someone wearing the Buzz & Woody shirt during the 2011 Princess Half weekend.:thumbsup2

I've googled around a bit (someone's board at work...) and found the following. My money's still on Brave for now...fun to have something else to speculate about!

2011 - Buzz and Woody
2010 - Up
2009 - Circle of Life 5k
2008 - Safari 5k (?)
2007 - Pirate and Princess 5k (?)
2006 - Chicken Little (?)

yay ... I can finally join this thread!! :cool1::cool1:

I registered for the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon! It will be my first marathon. I registered for it in secret though. The reason is that I've been injured (boring and not so boring details in my blog) and everyone around me has been discouraging me from going back to running.

I just want to set a goal for myself and let my doctor and my body be my guide. My doctor will help me transition back to running safely and smart. but for now, I will see you in 2013! :thumbsup2

Hi everyone!! I'm planning on running the half in January. It will be my first and I'm looking forward to it but kind of scared at the same time.

It's great to see so many people on here with similar goals.

Running the Disney Half Marathon and my to be Husband is running the Full on our Disneymoon! :woohoo:
