Here's my Marathon Weekend wwyd?
The last 2 years we've gone for Marathon Weekend with the 3 kids and my parents. My parents are aging and my mom has emphysema so she uses an ECV. For 2013 my DH has announced that he wants me to go alone so he doesn't have to manage the kids (in 2010 my mom was awful but this year my parents were pretty helpful). I was hoping to bring the kids one last time to do the 5k together and bring my nanny along with my parents.
My kids and I had already talked about the 5k before my DH announced that he doesn't want the kids along. My parents really want to go again and see the kids in the 5k (my mom is training to walk a 5k!). I don't know what to do! I really think with 5 adults and 3 kids we should be good, even if I run 39.3 miles (or 42.4 if I do the 5k) but I don't know how to convince my DH.
Thoughts?
I am going alone for the ToT weekend but we've always been together for the marathon weekend. And it's my 1st Goofy...

Amanda

Sorry you are having to deal with this - surely with your parents, a nanny, and your kids being older and more independent, he can handle it. Tell him if you all don't go to Disney together as a family, you will leave him home alone with all the kids instead!

Yes I always walk the water stops too. I try to be careful on the slippery ground and watch out for others. Also, slowing down to drink the water helps to make sure I don't accidentally gulp a bunch of air due to sloshing water, which can cause a stomach pain issue later in the race!

Swallowing air isn't the problem for me...during my first race I attempted the whole drinking-while-running and spilled water all over myself. I drank maybe 3 drops of the entire cup and wore the rest. :headache:

I am in the Boro as well :thumbsup2
I am doing the Philadelphia Rock n Roll in September :cool1:

Stop by the booth and say hi after the race if you aren't too tired. It is the Jersey Shore Running Club clothing booth, and from what I understand I will be in the Convention Center!

Awesome! I will stop by and say Hi!

Thanks! :goodvibes I read your half report from, I think, 2010? It was great!!

Congrats on your OKW reservation!

Question for you: you said you wear running skirts. What kind do you like? :confused3 I really, REALLY want a running skirt - they're just so darn cute - but they are so expensive! I looked at the sale link you posted in the shopping thread and I'm thinking about trying runningskirts.com but they were out of my size in the one I wanted :sad1: (red with white polka dots...like Minnie! :goodvibes)

...

If you're worried about blisters I'd suggest investing in new socks. I had issues until I started wearing Balega socks. They're pricey - about $7 per pair - but they are totally worth it! Here are the ones I like:

That trip report wasn't mine...I was part of it though so that's why you think that. :)

I see you got a running skirt! I only have one, it's a basic black Nike. The Running Skirt brand and Sparkle Skirts are on my wish list! Every year I think about getting some but never do. Maybe this year, since I'm going Goofy, I'll finally go for it and get two new skirts!

I wear Balega socks too! LOVE them!! I paid closer to $10 for each of my pairs. Not cheap but totally worth it. I have three of four pairs which have all been used and washed countless times, and they are still great.

WWID? Well...I have four kids and all of my race trips are taken without them or dh. He stays home with the boys while I have some much appreciated ME time. I get to put all the focus on myself and what I need/want to do. I eat what/when/where I want, sleep as much as I want, do the parks or not, etc. It's all about me, myself and I! My race trips are not long, this one will be the longest yet at 3 nights, so it's not like I leave them for a long time. And we take our family trips at other times...we'll be down there for 8 nights this June. :)

So, that's just me. Good luck deciding!

I have one running skirt, it is a skirtsport skirt and I LOVE it! I have yet to race in it, but I have worn it to train. It is all pink, and has several pocket. Very comfy! It was spendy though, so it might be awhile before I get another one. I got it because they offered a free running shirt with purchase, lol. I am considering another one for the Marathon, maybe a red and black one if hey have it. hmmmmmmmm

I once made the mistake of thinking I was pouring water on my head because I didn't want to stop running... only it was gatorade. Not fun in 90 degree weather.

Amanda, I think if you bring the nanny that would take some of the pressure off your husband. Your kids are also older then they were last year (how old are they?) so as they age it does get better. This year I won't take my kids because DD is only 6 but with DS being 16 1/2 next year and her being 7, I might bring them. Plus it's mine and DH's 20th anniversary in 2013 so we want to do something alone! LOL
How is your mom doing physically? Is your dad helpful? Is there anyone else you can bring to help them or are they pretty independent?
Obviously it's up to your family but I think with a nanny on board, you will be ok.

That's what I was thinking, too. Kids will be almost 9, almost 7, and almost 5.
My mom does ok on flat ground but gets winded on hills. That's why the ECV helps. She walks on her treadmill every day now so we're hoping she'll be stronger. My dad is very helpful and my nanny is awesome!

He would stay home with them if we don't take them. But I'd love the support!

You make a good point Liz. I'm going for the ToT race by myself but marathon weekend has always been a family thing for us. My son has some attachment issues when I'm not around so part of me is worried that I'll have to cancel at the last minute if they don't come.

Ah...you know what, I think I'm thinking of not only that report, but also a training journal you posted. Or am I making that up too? :scratchin

I had a Nike that I got on their site on clearance that never quite fit me right and I got rid of it. Then I lost about 25 pounds, so I wonder if it would have ended up working?! :headache: ARG. To be honest, I am totally using Goofy as an excuse to get skirts. I need 2 outfits, so why not go all out?! :thumbsup2 I'm excited for the SparkleSkirt...I hope it works out. If it does I'm going to splurge on the Pink MinnieTech for the marathon.

I have 8-10 pairs of Balega socks. Some are thicker, so I only use them outside in the winter, but I LOVE the thinner ones. So worth the money.

I feel like ALL running skirts are pricey. I have a friend that loves a C9 skirt she got at Target for, like $15, but I never see them there. I see other C9 stuff, but never skirts.

I once made the mistake of thinking I was pouring water on my head because I didn't want to stop running... only it was gatorade. Not fun in 90 degree weather.

Mmm...sounds sticky. Bummer.

they used to make a really great bra, too, for like $15, but it's disappeared from the shelves. If I were still shopping in the Target adjacent to the Target headquarters where the corporate people are hanging around, I would tell them to bring it back.

Now you guys have me really thinking about clothes. I've always heard people have bad luck with running skirts so I've avoided them thus far. I have one but I mostly wear it to play tennis with DS11. They are just so darn cute! My shoes are good, although I will probably get another pair before the race. They also make a road version (I wear the trail version) but the road one is soo thin!
I have ok socks but I might try the balega ones, it can't hurt right?

I'm going to wait a little bit on clothes for now. I want to see how much more weight I can lose. I've been maintaining for 3 weeks but yesterday I bought 2 new everyday wear T-shirts and got larges. I was typically wearing XL, and my Disney shirts are all XXL. So I was stoked!

OK off to workout. the kids have a 1/2 day so I need to hit the green now if I want to get 2-3 laps in. I might even brave a jog here and there! LOL

I'm a HUGE fan of Skirtsports! Pricey, yes, but I have gotten 1 or 2 on sale, and found one on Amazon that was a little below the normal cost. I have 1 that I've been wearing for about 4 years, and it still looks and feels great!
I've tried other running skorts, but they just don't do it for me. I bought one that was cheaper, wore it a few times, then ran a half marathon in it. The shorts part got bunched up in 1 spot, and rubbed against my other leg. It went from chafing to a nasty friction burn pretty quickly, and I had to take a week off to let it heal. Not fun!

I just got my first running dress. I haven't been out in it yet, because I have a stupid shin splint, but I can't wait.

I got a tank from them on clearance last fall for $7 or something. It's purple and sort of has an empire waist. I LOVE it.

Congrats on the smaller shirt! I only made the switch to Balega socks because I was getting blisters.

Oh man...that half marathon experience sounds painful. YIKES.

Running dress? Hmm, never heard of one. Where did you get it? You'll have to let us know if you like it.

Okay, so I mentioned before that I impulsively ordered a SparkleSkirt on Tuesday. Well, it came in the mail already! They actually had it shipped out by the next day and it was sitting in my mailbox this afternoon. Pretty impressive.

I tried it on (fit like a glove) and headed out for a run. The run itself was awful...it's my own fault, I knew it was going to be hot and sunny, so rather than run early I waited until 2PM. :crazy2: I seriously felt like the sun reached down and punched me in the head. The skirt was FABULOUS though. Nice big pockets, flattering, and, most importantly, the shorts didn't chafe at all. I'm going to be sure to wear it a few more times with the ultimate goal of wearing it for the WDW Half (because I'm lame and already have my outfits planned out.) :rolleyes2 If I think the skirt will last, I'm going to order a different one for the marathon.

Two gripes about the skirt, besides the cost. The first, and I should have expected it, is that with it being so warm out today I was wishing that I didn't have 2 layers on my legs (the skirt and the shorts under the skirt). Not really a fault of the skirt I guess, just something I'll have to keep in mind for the future. My bigger issue is the care instructions for the skirts. The skirts are supposed to be hand wash only...they say that you can machine wash them in cold water on delicate though. I'm way too lazy to hand wash anything, so mine will be going in the washer. Hopefully it will be okay. I'm not sure how well this would work if you actually did get a skirt with sparkles on it though. I ordered one from them about a year ago that had sequins. Included in the box was a tube of puffy pain in case sequins fell off...the skirt didn't fit me well, so I returned it. I'm not sure that the sequins would have made it through a wash, and it makes me nervous enough to not get a skirt with sequins on it. :confused3 But overall, yeah...2 thumbs up for SparkleSkirts! :cool1:

So what do you do when the runs... ain't so great? I have my first half marathon a month from today and did my 10 mile run today and omg... I could not get myself together at ALL. This was brutal, more so than the 7 miles I did last weekend in the humidity (which I seriously can't stand or function in), which was pretty bad, but I pushed through and finished.
on top of that my feet are getting blisters now when this was never a problem before... The blisters were bad enough that I sat on a curb in the shade and ran the remaining 4 miles without socks. Thankfully, I came home to find the Lifetime movie about the Menendez brothers was on and I have job interview next week so it didn't end on too bad a note.

That's so cute, I really want since my tshirts have become cumbersome and way too hot...

Does anyone know of anything to use to prevent chafing so it's possible to wear the skirt without the shorts?

ugh, so sorry about the blisters! I have had many bad runs, but something about race day makes it all better!
I use "feetures" socks, and have not had one single blister, and I started training in January. They are the best!
For chafing, there is something called Body Glide (also good for blisters, carry it in your fanny pack on race day) that my friend swears by!

Everyone suffers from bad training days. Just remember that you finished the 10 miles and the next run will be better. I wear two different kinds of socks....Thorlo and Feetures. Both provide wonderful cushioning and I could count on one hand the times I have suffered with a blister...and those were tiny.

I wear the running skirts skirt with the brief (could not stand the compression shorts and the risk of them bunching up) and have never had a problem with chafing. I do believe there is a type of cream some folks use, but I started out training in them with shorter distances and wore them for races and adore them.

They are a bit pricey, but I ask for them as gifts. Also, they start out a little tight, but do stretch... I had to replace one after 2 years due to stretching, but I wore it a couple of times a week so I could not really complain!

My favorite is the one with 3 pockets so you can put the bulkiest thing at the back and still have space for keys, etc.

I live in fear of blisters, but had my shoes fit at the local running store and have never had any. Think I will need another pair (and possibly larger size) for the goofy though since it will be back to back runs. I also run in the Running room's thinest socks or the ironman socks.

Another fan of the sparkleskirts.com SparkleTech skirt. It has two big leg pockets and a waist pocket. I was able to run the Tinker Bell without my iFitness belt and my runner's tummy was very thankful. I had a small water bottle that fit in the leg pockets.

Another nice thing about them is that Leah will put the WISH feather logo on it for free. Here is a flat picture of my outfit from the Tink:
1325028652.jpg

And by the way, if anyone knows the significance of the WISH feather please share as someone was asking about it.

Our races will be here before we know it, even though it seems like January is a LONG way away now.
