Official Thread For Upcoming Eastern Canadian Cruises

How did you like the trip to Peggy's Cove? We are booked for Peggy's Cove and Titanic.

Anyone else take these tours? Thanks.

Hi: There seem to be a few excursions to Peggy's Cove. Some with a lunch, some with a hike, some with stops at other places. We did the Peggy's Cove and Coastal Hike. It was a very good excursion. Any time spent in Peggy's Cove will be good. It is a small, quaint village. The main focus, of course, is the picture-perfect lighthouse. But the whole area is lovely. Anywhere you point a camera is a good shot! You'd probably need a couple of hours here, but then you can move on to something else. I definitely think it is worth seeing, and Peggy's Cove is only about 30-45 minutes from the ship, so not too far.

A previous posters note gave me this idea :)

Is there anyone that is going to be on the ship anytime soon that would be willing to pick me up a Saint John DCL trading pin? I am a pin trader and Saint John born & bred. It looks like there are only going to be 500 available so I am afraid I will miss out. I wish they would let me on the ship to buy one :)

I can paypal the money for the pin + shipping to you. Please PM me if you would be able to help!

Thanks in advance
Jess

We have 4 young children with us and thought it would be fun, but haven't heard any reports about it.

Did anyone give it a try. Eager to hear how it was.

Thanks so much.

I just looked out of my window at the office and saw the ship in the port. I hope everyone who is visiting today has a great day!

Hi
I am new to the thread- our family is going 8/12. We are excited- DH and I have cruised but never the kiddos. They are 7 and nearly 4.

DH and I cruised out of NYC for our honeymoon 11 years ago. From reading other posts- it sounds pretty unchanged- the parking and such.

Thanks for the chatter!

Holly
Hi Holly (and all);

My 7 y/o son and I will be on the 8/12 cruise. I'm enjoying all of these threads, as well. I'll be on my own (without my hubby) for this one, and my son plans to diss me for the kids clubs (perhaps he will meet your kids?), so I'm hoping to meet some new acquaintances (female, of course!).

I booked Palo for brunch and dinner, but wonder if I'll feel uncomfortable, with eating alone? Or will they seated me with someone (female, of course)?

Thanks, everyone, for all of the information!

Denise

I've done it (Theodore Tugboat) with a work function years ago ... it was great for young kids and gives adults a time to take a few photos.

Will definitely give it a try. We have any early tugboat ride, so that will give us plenty of time to enjoy the city itself.

Thanks again.

Hello everyone!

We recently returned from the Magic's inaugural cruise to Canada, and we had a wonderful time. Because I received so much great information from everyone here, I thought I'd give you our feedback on our shore excursions.

In Halifax, we did the Lunenburg tour through Disney. It was a long day, but we had a great tour. Our guide, Robert, was very informative and enthusiastic; our driver, Wendy, was excellent as well. The town of Lunenburg is incredibly picturesque and the walking tour was very nice (down hill all the way to the bay). However, because this was a long day, it is probably best for older children. We had a 16, 14, and 6 year old in tow (the 6 year old did not take the walking tour). There is a maritime museum and touch tank for younger children who opt out of the walking tour. We had lunch at Big Red's immediately across the street from the museum (which is where the tour bus parked to meet us after the walking tour). We give this the highest recommendation for lunch. They make homemade bread daily, and we had the best fish and chips and poutine (and if you've never had poutine, then say hello to your new favorite way to adorn a french fry). We also had a fantastic view of the bay while we ate, and the service was excellent. The menu was diverse, and everything was very affordable as well. Our bill for two adults and a teenager, all of whom had sodas and left food on their plates because they were stuffed, was $40 including tip. The building itself is also the old Lunenburg jail. What more could you want for lunch?

On the way home, we stopped in Marone Bay to browse their shops (though I would have preferred more time in Lunenburg), and Robert and Wendy gave us a quick tour of Halifax on our way back to the bus, stopping at the Citadel for a quick picture, which was nice. We got back with a half hour to shop at the port and then we were off to St. John. It was a wonderful day, I hope we can return again with more time.

In St. John, we ventured on our own. We took our 14 year old to zip line through St. John Adventures. They are located only about a 10 minute taxi ride from the port (we paid $11 or 12 US dollars fare). I would recommend the zip line at St. John Adventures as a fun alternative activity for older children and adventurous adults. The staff were very kind and safety conscious. We had a view of the Fundy Bay and the reversing falls (though it is directly across from a big paper mill, so it was not the most picturesque view, but nevertheless it was a good view). We scheduled our zipline for 11 am and it took an hour and a half. After it was over, we taxied over to the City market and had plenty of time to eat lunch and browse the shops before we sailed.

I'm sure future Disney cruisers will enjoy their trip as much as we did. The cool Canadian nights are perfect for hot chocolate and looking out over the water on deck, so hopefully the machine on deck 9 proves more reliable for your cruise than it was for ours. Happy sailing!

Fresh bread at Big Red's. Delectable!

Beautiful Lunenburg from across the bay.

So glad you enjoyed your trip!

Poutine is the bomb!

Thanks for the zip line report! We are doing that on our 8/12 cruise. We scheduled 11 AM as well. Cannot wait!

We had a great time visiting Halifax. This port was very easy to do thanks to the tips from everyone on this thread. We spent 2 hours at the Citadel. Both my DH and I enjoyed the tour and walking around on our own. Next it was past the old town clock and over to the public gardens. We spent around 45 minutes walking around the beautiful gardens. We stopped at the Old Burying Ground and Saint Paul's church. Both places had great guides. We also got to the Maritime Museum. Sorry i would pass on this one. I wish we would have had two days in Halifax. I hear everyone who got to peggy's cove really enjoyed it.

Sounds like your really enjoyed this. That's great.

Did anyone get caught off guard when the noon gun went off? :rotfl2:

That was the one disappointing moment. I never heard the gun:sad2:
We were on Spring Garden standing outside of some Frog restruant. We waited til 12:05. We never heard it. So I am not sure if the wind carried the sound away from us or if it didn't it go off

Just wanted to let everyone know that we submitted the Navigators from our June 10-15 cruise and they are online now. If you go to "Staterooms" on the menu bar above, and choose "Navigators" on the drop down menu you'll see them.

Thanks again to everyone from Halifax and Saint John who posted tips on this thread. You really helped make our trip a fabulous one! Can't wait to return and see even more of your beautiful region.

Hi All! We're back from the June 17th sailing, too! As I write, I feel the sway of the boat - still!
It was super and I'm feeling just a bit blue that it's over, so time to get started on pics and reports, eh?
We heard the gun at noon in Halifax! In fact, we were right there! We had just climbed the hill toward the entrance and were stopped to wait for the cannon - what a boom! Fun! After the noon cannon they do a changing of the guards so if you're there at noon you get a fun show.
Another highlight was the jet boat rides in Saint John - haven't laughed and whooped so much in ages! Got quite wet but FUN! If you look at the pic from the zipline in the above thread, you'll see the boat dock!
First sea day was quite cool, not much on deck activity except a few fearless kids. Second sea day cool but beautiful and sunny - pools packed!
More to come,
Thanks Canada - you guys are the friendliest hosts ever!

Thank you to everyone for all this wonderful info!
There was a post about currency in Canada. What about credit cards? Do the shops accept major credit cards? (probably the farmer's market does not)

Thank you

Yes merchants in Canada accept credit cards and there are some of the vendors in the Saint John City Market that will accept them as well.

We will be doing Peggy's Cove with Hop on Hop off bus tour in Halifax. DH would like to have lobster for lunch - can anyone recommend a good place to eat???

Thanks so much to everyone who has already sailed for posting about your experiences! Can anyone speak to what younger children have enjoyed or might enjoy? Mine will be 6 and almost 2 - I don't see them spending a couple of hours appreciating the Citadel or any sort of shopping! We sail on August 5th - this is our first cruise ever and I've done no research or planning yet . . . the panic is starting to set in!
