I just joined and will be running in the 2010 Disney Princess Half too. I am actually going for the Coast to Coast Challenge and will also complete the 2010 Disneyland Half. I have never competed in any of the Disney Marathon events, or any other races for that matter.
I just decided that it makes more sense to knock stuff off my bucket list while I am still pretty young and I am not starting small!
I am so excited! What is everyone else doing to train for this? I saw that there are several people who seem to run a lot, but anyone else out there that has never done a half? Any advice regarding what to focus on from those who completed the race this year?
I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

So I called today to extend my stay by one night and ask about adding the DDP since one of the runners heard that we could add it starting in September.
I was told that they never allow the DDP to be added to marathon stays.
Don't they know we need to eat to?
I Shelby, welcome! I am running my first half. I ran the 5K last year and had a great time and figured I'd push myself a bit and run the half! I am using the Marathon for Mortals book as a guide. A few other runners on here swear by it so I gave it a shot. I am starting my training in November. This thread will pick up pace in a few weeks once everyone starts training.
Good luck!!
leeshiebean said:Welcome! I'm also a newbie to half marathon running. I know what you mean about not starting small!
I'm using the Jeff Galloway "Half Marathon - You Can Do It!" book which I've found to be incredibly helpful. He also has info in his book about the 'run-walk-run' method for anyone interested, but I'm just running. I'm finding his training plan to work really well for me so far. I think any of the books/training plans that we all use on here are good choices, so take a look at them and pick one that you think is best for you. You can also check out runnersworld.com or get the magazine for some more helpful hints.
Hi can I join the fun. I just registered myself, my DSis and my DMom for the Royal Family 5K.
This will be my first race ever (well, might do a local 5K or two, but I'll consider Disney my "first official"). My DSis runs marathons and does triathlons?!? I, however, am not a runner or even jogger for that matter. I have been working on my weight, though, for the past 10 months (72 lbs down so far) and my DSis, has convinced me to try the 5K. I'm going through the Couch to 5K program and hopefully by March be ready to at least jog part of the 5K?!
Anyway, thanks for this thread. I"ll be sure to keep checking in![]()
Good to see that there are other newbies. I looked into the Jeff Galloway plan and will start it October 1st. I am going through the Runners World Complete Book of Women's Running right now, and I also have the Non-Runners Marathon Trainer by David Whitsett to go through next. I am just working on my strength training and cardio - but not running officially yet. I am currently doing the Wii Active Marathon Training which is kicking my butt at the moment which is doing a good job of kicking my butt!![]()
I have also read (well, I'm almost finished) The Competitive Runners Handbook. It's my boyfriend's book and it was sitting up on our bookshelf so I decided to give it a read. It's got a lot of good information about running form, nutrition, pacing, injury prevention, etc. Being a new runner it was all interesting and helpful to learn the ins and outs of running. But then again, I'm in the science field, so it's no surprise I love learning the details of things.
I wish you good luck for your training when you begin in Oct - be sure to keep us posted on how it goes!
Taken for the Disney sports chat:
Karen NY: I just called the disney number and found out that there is no dining plan for 2010. Is that true?
Kecia: Hi Karen - actually, no. There will be a dining plan for 2010, but it will not be available for sale until September. If you've already booked your travel via our website www.disneyworldmarathon.com or by calling 407-wdw-irun - you'll just need to call back in September to add it to your itinerary.

I would send them an email and ask, it's stupid if they are saying no on the phone and yes on line.

I also had a question about the after party for anyone that raced last year. What time of day is the party held? I want to make a late breakfast ADR at Kona, but I wasn't sure where and when the party was. Thanks!
I've never done a half either, actually until 2 weeks ago I had never run in a race before! I started training in March; I figured a year would give me enough time, and I would have enough time to get all my injuries out of the way and not effect my training to much. I'm sort of using Jeff Galloways plan for half marathons, I read the book and changed things to fit me.
The first few months of running were really hard, the actually leaving the house to go run. Now if I miss a day of running I'm looking forward to when I can run again.

I had a question for anyone that ran it last year. I noticed in the pictures that there were characters all over the place and people were getting their pictures with them. Did runners actually carry a camera or did they have the Disney Photographers there that gave you a claim ticket to look at the images? I am pretty much resigned to ignoring all the characters unless my time is good.Regardless, I just wanted to check.
DO NOT ignore all the characters!!!this is what a disney race is all about - (for me anyway), i could care less about beating out any time --- as that is not what i am there for -- it's about having fun, and the characters were everywhere - I will admit, i didn't stop for most of them, but i did stop after we ran thru the castle, and i did stop one other time.
To answer your camera question -- what they do is take pics and then you search them out online after using your race bib number. They are not "photopass" photographers.. However, lots of people carried their own camera - and this year they are giving us a disposable Kodak camera..
This year, i am stopping at LOTS of them!!
I would just hate for you to regret not stopping and enjoying the disney magic while you race.. Its such a huge part of the whole thing.. Unless you have a chance to come in first place -- and unless you know you aren't bringing up the rear, why not stop?!![]()
I like Cliff Shot Gels personally, I don't like sport beans while i am in a race, it's too hard to chew and i get really thirsty with them.. The Gel is definately an "aquired" taste, it tastes like warm boogers. LOL
I need to research though, someone pointed out i shouldn't do the gels and powerade together much -- i need to find that post and where i can research that info... Anyone know??
And, as far as the 16 min mile thing.. As long as you allow yourself proper training time, you should be ok! I also found that wearing a pace band really kept me motivated, i checked it and my watch at every mile marker, and knew exactly where i stood time-wise.I printed mine out from the internet somewhere - i would just google "pace band" and see what comes up.
