Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

Quick questions,
I just got off the phone with Rundisney. I checked the prices they gave me and the hotel options. It looked like I could do better just booking thru Disney. Did they discontinue run discounts? I also do not have a link to buy discount park tickets. Is that gone too?
The big benefit of booking through runDisney anymore, I think (I am not totally sure, though) is that you get race registration insurance. So if you get injured, you get your race fees back. Again, I am not completely sure about this.

They don't need to do discount tickets or rooms for the races anymore - they are popular enough, and enough of a draw, and they - I guess - feel that they don't need to offer those incentives any longer. If booking through Disney is cheaper, that's what I would do.

What I had found last year, was that they offered whatever discounts were being offered by booking directly with Disney, and I was able to get the AP discounted room with a dining package (I think I also got a room only AP discount - I had a split stay). This year I booked with them originally before discounts came out (for Marathon Weekend), and then when AP discounts came out, I called back and they told me they could only give me the discount if I added on dining. :headache:

I know a general discount came out today for room only for The Dark Side weekend dates. Maybe runDisney will only offer the Disney discounts if it is a package with dining now. :confused3

Maybe you can try again tomorrow with a different CM.

Got out for my first training run last night. Because I work for a toy company, work has obviously been nuts for me over the last few months (especially the last two weeks), so I haven't run since September. Man, I forgot how much I love it (when I'm done anyway:rotfl:). Looking forward to starting this new training cycle and doing my first race since I did the full in 2015. :goodvibes

This is my first RunDisney race, and I've just started my training! I've run a 5k before, but never anything longer and I'm not a regular runner. I'm quite a bit nervous about finishing and not getting swept. Anyone else a first-timer and following the Jeff Galloway plan? So far, it seems pretty simple, but I live up North so the long runs indoors are going to be killers :snooty:

My first was last year. I did a 10k once but was almost all 5ks and just convinced myself it was mental. I used the same plan. If you stick to it, you will be fine. The race flies by when you are in it. If you complete the training, you won't have to worry at all about being swept.

Speaking of training, finally time to get going, and I promptly pop/strain my hip abductor muscle the week before so now I'm doing some walking while I try to heal. Not a great start to my training (didn't do it while running).

Thanks everyone for the quick responses! I will continue to look for a good deal but am excited to be going in just a few months.

So, I'm rather than using a program, pushing myself and potentially injuring and/or getting frustrated with having to stay on track, I've been running and training myself. However, every now and again I peek at the Jeff Galloway program just to see how I think I'm doing, and now I want to ask all of you. According to the plan, tomorrow Dec. 31st is a four mile run. I've been doing seven since the beginning of December. Then at the end of January I set a goal for myself to be at 10, where the program is around 7. I figure to feel comfortable both mentally and physically being able to solidly run 10 at the very least before crossing the start in April, and work on adding the last three miles when I feel comfortable and able to in the months leading up to the Challenge and avoid being swept. No pressure to keep with a program, and I feel safe avoiding injury from pushing myself. Any thoughts out there?

Hello MyFavEeyoe,

I'd look at the Galloway plan to see how to build your back to back runs if you are doing the Challenge. I print the Galloway plan but I don't stress myself out too much if I miss a few weekday runs. I also swap SPIN for a run more weeks than not. I'm a bit older and I've had issues with Plantar Fascitis, so I don't run two days in a row unless I'm training for a Challenge. I tend to run the full 10K and the Half and call it a day on my last long weekend train. I do not bother with going over a half in distance to train.

Good luck to you!

My understanding of Galloway's plan is that Jeff Galloway says your long run mileage should increase by no more than 1.5 miles per week to reduce injury risk. Before I signed up for my first challenge in 2015, I was real lazy at the start of training and had to skip almost all the short weekend runs in order to fit the longer runs in before the race. While this worked for me, I don't recommend if only because having the short weekend runs helps me avoid feeling more burned out.

My Galloway Dark Side Challenge plan shows an 8 mile run on February 4th. I don't know if or how that varies from the 1/2 plan.

The plans that are out there, whether they be Galloway, Higdon or somebody else's, have been researched, set up and proven to get you ready to complete the race distance(s) with a minimal risk of injury. My thoughts are that as a relatively new runner you run a much more significant risk of either inadvertently under training yourself or even over training and injuring yourself by following a self-designed program. I'd suggest picking a proven plan that looks "do-able" given your personal situation and following it, at least the first time around.

I agree. Galloway's plans and run/walk/run method are specifically designed to avoid injury, so I would usually recommend his approach to any beginner. Also, the other key to avoiding injury is to run slow while training. Most people start out thinking they have to really put in a good effort, but that's not the case for distance running. If you can't recite the Pledge of Allegiance easily while you're running, you're going too fast. When you race, you put in more effort, but the body can't handle that kind of stress regularly and adapt/improve.

I want to book a breakfast ressie for after the 10k....what time would be good?

I was thinking 8:00am at the Wave, would we be able to make that?

Depends on what corral you start for race start time, pace, where you are staying & if by bus or car. But, say you start right at 5:30 in A take an hour or less, you would be done by 6:30 so that gives you 1.5 hours to travel/clean up & if staying at Contemporary 8:00am would probably be fine. Personally, it would be too early for me regardless of those things as I don't like to be rushed & like trying to get some of the characters after. After 10ks we are at our park for the morning by 9 usually though it seems and take buses.

Well, the Dark Side got me and I did it - I'm officially registered for the challenge. Flights are also changed (for only a $20 difference in total fare!!). Instead of arriving on Saturday like originally planned I'll come down on Tuesday, since that flight was cheaper and partly makes up for the Sunday departing flight being more expensive. What a way to start off the new year and it will be my celebration for turning 30 (my birthday is the Monday before the races, the 17th).

Welcome to the Dark Side! BTW, my daughter's birthday is the same as yours.

Good morning Darksiders!

I've been lurking on the marathon thread - it's getting me excited about Darkside! We finally saw Rogue 1 yesterday. Last vacation day before I head back to work is today. I know the time will fly between now and April (although it doesn't feel like it on long run days!)

Happy New Year and have a great Monday (although I've totally lost track of days this week - HA!)

New to thread so point me in the right direction if it has already been addressed..

Do we have any idea of what course changes may be to the HALF and 10k races?

It says on rundisney.com it starts on Floridian way & ends at Epcot for both, that's all we know for changes so far.

The 10k description on runDisney does give a little more info:
The thrills begin on Floridian Way where you will head to Disney's Hollywood Studios® running down Hollywood Boulevard past Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts and on to Epcot® where you will complete your journey!
