We usually surprise our kids, and they love it and actually request it! Unfortunately, this trip we wanted to leave the night of Halloween, so in order to do so, they would either leave earlier in the day and miss most of the school festivities or leave later and really only get 1 hr of trick-or-treating. We didn't know what they would want and booking airfare is a big expense to guess on.

They were a little upset that they weren't surprised with the trip, but then we followed the news of the trip with another big bombshell that made them forget about their disappointment.

They asked why we decided to go on a WDW trip when we just did DCL last year. We had originally told them that DCL was a BIG cash trip so WDW would be a few years. DH told them that we decided to go because if we waited a few years, we wouldn't be able to fit in a room for 5, and that most WDW rooms can't accommodate for 6 people! My DS was the first one to catch on that we would soon be adding to our family. WDW at 28 weeks pregnant is better than with an infant IMHO.

My boys are 13, 10 and 6. The 6 year old wakes me up each morning to take a balloon off the countdown clock and then every evening he starts singing how many days we have left once midnight comes. I don't think I'll be able to pull the wool over their eyes.

We're also leaving Halloween night. I didn't want to leave after Trick or Treating because we need to be at RD the next morning. DS has a half day for conferences, so I'm going to try to snag the first conference slot and then head to the airport. It's just me and DS so if DH has to do the conference by himself, it's not the end of the world. But I'm going to try to do both. Fortunately the flight times worked out.

I'm also planning to put together a bag of candy for the airplane. Not that he needs it, but it will make him feel better about missing it.

I really wanted to but DS11 doesn't transition well. When we moved from BWV to AKV for a surprise split stay he was not happy at first. Of course, when he we were made FOD, upgraded to a 2-bedroom suite and he saw giraffes outside our room, his attitude changed. ;-)

Anyway, this trip is the weekend after his birthday and we leave on Halloween night. So in order to effect a surprise I'd have to pretend to plan for both of those, and that would be too much heartbreak. Knowing the choices up front, of course, he chose Disney. But surprising him would not have gone well.

Wow I can totally see how a kiddo with transition issues would not do well with surprises. Even with warning my son doesn't do well most of the time. Making choices is soo hard for him.

Both my sons need time to process change in order to get the best of the experience. Looking forward to one and being moved to another, like it or not is not a fun process.

Due to the age differences in my kids, we had to compromise. There was a 6am flight that was a great deal, which my DS was all for since he is starting to get out of trick-or-treating, but my DD's wouldn't hear of it.

We wound up doing a 6pm flight that was priced well, but it's a one stop so we arrive in WDW after 10pm. But both my DD will be able to do their Halloween parade in school and will trick-or-treat for @ 1hr on the walk home from school. Everyone was appeased with the compromises.

And they still will be surprised a little. We had originally planned to come back early Friday 11/8, but we got a great deal on airfare coming back late on Saturday night 11/9. So we get to tell them that they get almost 2 more days in WDW. We'll tell them that Friday when they think we should start packing.

I'm the thrill ride junkie in our family so I couldn't do Disney pregnant, but if you're not, then yeah, pregnant is better than nursing.

Yeah, it would not be a good idea to surprise a kid regarding Halloween and his birthday. If his mind was set on something else he might start crying from the change. We were watching Disney surprises gone wrong on YouTube the other day. One kid started crying because he thought he was going to Chuck e Cheese and he didn't think Disney was a good substitute. My kids couldn't believe how some of the kids reacted. I don't think I would surprise a kid the day of a trip, but a few weeks in advance would be a lot of fun.

I agree with this. Unless the kids are older of course, and even then you definitely have to know your kid or you might still be the one surprised! Of course, it is hard for most of us here to imagine NOT wanting to be at Disney above anything else, but it's true not everyone loves Disney as much as us.

Congratulations! How exciting! Definitely better pregnant than nursing imo!
And that's a great compromise, they will love having those "extra" 2 days! Just think how excited you were!

Thanks for the well wishes. And we really didn't plan for 4 kids either. Unfortunately I am the one who loves the thrill rides so I am bummed that I won't be able to do my favorite rides. My DS and DD will just have to do them, and some even my DD won't do. My DH won't do any of them.

Ha, I definitely would have wound up with an oops (and loved every minute of it I'm sure), but we decided to make sure that never happened, and hubby decided he would be the one to get fixed since I went through enough.

That stinks that you will have to miss out on rides. Watching other people go on tower of terror would be torture for me.

I'm laughing cause I have been struggling with if I should use up all my reward points or save them to plan another trip in 2014.
Finally made a decision to just use them, and of course I can't get into the online system.
Just not in the mood to talk to a CM so I guess I'll try later.
Always amazes me when big companies don't have the IT stuff running at top performance.

Oh well 64 days to go. I have plenty of time to resolve this. Not like the points are going anywhere else.

Yeah, as much as I'd love another kiddo, I don't think I could handle it. Of course much of my problem is that I had mine WAY too close together, but when you start late you do what you've got to do.

I think my problem was that I had them too far apart. We wanted them closer and we wanted the 4th before I turned 35. It took longer to get pregnant each time than we thought though, so my first came at 28 and my 3rd came at 34. My youngest and oldest are 6.5 years apart so they aren't really into the same things.

That will be a great surprise. I do a lot of in-trip surprises and mostly they go over well. I surprised DS with MNSSHP on his birthday one year (see pics in my sig) and that was a huge hit. Though he still thinks that one was from Mickey. ;-) I do so many surprises that it was hard to convince DH that the FOD and upgrade were not my doing. I just planned the split stay.

DS did ask if there would be pixie dust this trip since we're staying offsite. I assured him that I was planning surprises and of course, CM pixie dust can happen any time. He's learned to cherish even the smallest pixie dust (like the bus driver giving him a bus trading card with a hidden Mickey) and I love that!

That is how my DS11 is. He loves Disney and is really looking forward to it but he likes to be in the know. He thinks it is super cool the two younger girls think we are leaving Dec 1st and is excited to help surprise them though.

Where are you staying?

My Mom's house in Leesburg. About 45 minutes away.

When we were there last Dec we booked a Bounceback for Oct at BWV ( for F&W) but we cancelled because a trip just wasn't in the budget. But when I started planning DS's birthday party ( latest thing is a mobile video game truck) I realized I had enough airline miles to take him. The whole family can't stay at my Mom's house but it's fine for just the two of us. And we both still have valid APs from our Dec trip (which was 12 days). Plus my parents bought APs this year. So I'm paying about half of my airline ticket plus food. We're going for 4 days -3 in the park and one off. It shouldnt cost me any more than a regular birthday party for his friends.
