UNIVERSAL ORLANDOS KING KONG PACKS HIS BAGS AND BANANAS AND SAYS GOODBYE TO ORLANDO
Send-Off Salute Planned For the Classic Movie Ape
Kongs Sound Stage, Among the Largest in the World, to Become Home to New Mega-Attraction
After 12 years of wreaking havoc in Orlando, King Kong at Universal Studios Florida will rip apart his last aerial tram of unsuspecting park guests on Sunday, September 8. His home, a 71,000-square-foot, six-story tall soundstage at the theme park that is one of the largest in the world, is being vacated to provide the space requirements for a new mega-attraction, yet to be announced.
Although Kong is moving on, he remains an important part of movie history and Universals history and we will miss him, said Bob Gault, president and chief operating officer of Universal Orlando. However, in Kongs sound stage, we are creating another must-do attraction that pushes the limits of ride innovations. We are excited about this new attraction and believe it will revolutionize the theme park experience in much the same way the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride at Islands of Adventure has done, Gault added, declining to comment in more detail on the planned new attraction.
Kongfrontation opened at Universal Studios Hollywood in 1986 and quickly became a popular and classic Universal Studios experience that was re-created at Universal Studios Florida when the park opened in 1990. Kongs fury will continue to thrill guests at the Hollywood theme park.
Along with hundreds of admiring fans, park executives will bid a fond farewell to Kong with a send-off salute taking place at 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, September 8. Universal Orlando Annual Passholders will be given the honor of taking the final rides on Kongfrontation, beginning at 6 p.m. when the theme park will close to regular visitors. In honor of the occasion, Passholders in attendance will also receive a special commemorative gift.
In the weeks that follow Kongs farewell, technicians will begin disassembling the Kongfrontation attraction. Many of the rides components will be carefully preserved for potential future use. Once complete, work on the new attraction will begin.
King Kong roared into stardom in the 1933 Universal motion picture of the same name starring Fay Wray. The movie continues to be a beloved film classic and is listed by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 most influential movies of all time.
