OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Given how my IT bands are acting up when I insisted on running 6.2 miles Saturday before last to "feel" the distance and then 4 miles last Monday to check my time, and THEN doing a 10K on Sunday for real, I'm inclined to believe them that less is more.

Here are some really good yoga poses and stretches for IT band tightness and weakness.

8 poses for IT Band issues

Yoga IT Band flow

IT Band stretch

Runner's World IT Band Yoga Relief

Yoga's really good for keeping your hip flexors, hamstrings, calves, and quads loose too.

Thanks! Yeah...yoga's definitely a part of my cross training. These links are great!! The knees are feeling so much better today. I can try some light running/walking tomorrow to make sure, but based on past experience, I should be good to go. With new stretches!!

Hello,

For those wanting a "WISH racing team" Headsweats brand Visor and/or Hat by the January Marathon Weekend, please hurry and place your order over on the thread. I need to get the minimums before the end of the month so the order can be placed and I can get them mailed out to people.

Find the link below in my signature for the Hat/Visor order (not the special order Visor)

Thanks!!

So...I went down to Disney with my 12 of my family members for a trip last week, and then disney scheduled the wine and dine half for the tail end of the trip, so DH and I ran the relay. On the whole, I don't recommend running a race after 6 long, full days at Disney, but I digress!
Anyways, my dad got medal envy when we were done, and decided he just HAD to do the 1/2 in January. The original reason I bought annual passes last year was to do enough Disney races to get in shape, so I did Everest and tower of terror and princess 5k and wine and dine relay, but I've been fighting a mental block against doing a 1/2. But now I'm committed, the entrance is bought, the hotel reservations are made, and I'm scared to death!

I'll go back and read this whole thread tonight, but I just wanted to wave hi to all you people that will be passing me on the race route =) And if you're doing the marathon, I'll cheer you on from the Beach Club!

figment: Congratulations on making the decision! :cheer2: I'm sure you'll do great!

Congrats on your decision to register! This will be my first half, as well! :D

I was curious about what kind of gels or other fuels people prefer? I read that it will be Clif products on the course. I can't find these right now because I haven't been anywhere near my running store. I'm using Powerade gels instead. Is there a big difference? I don't like the sports beans because of the chewing, but, so far, everything is sitting well on my stomach.

This weekend at the expo, Gu was there and they had Gu Chomps. They're smaller than the Shot Blocks, not overly chewy or juicy/sweet. I used them on my race and they weren't that bad.

I love Gu Chomps. They are my favorite and just like eating fruit snacks IMO. I wish Disney would go with Gu...but Clif evidently is paying a lot of money for their sponsorship.

Congrats!!! You can do it!!! Don't even think that you can't??? We are all in this together!!

Just thought of a question... Will they have sports drinks and stuff (bars, fruit, whatever) at the finish (half) for everyone? Or if we want to have anything before we go back to our hotel, do we need to get Race Retreat?

Hi all!
Just finished my first Half last weekend.....and I enjoyed it, I want to do it again!
Just registered for the Half....so at least I will have more training for this event than Wine/DIne...
And someone said I should try this one;) Now I can compare a morning to night start for a race.

They have Powerade, Water, Oranges, Bananas, and Bagels at the finish. I always have the people with me (that aren't running) bring me my staple to the finish area - Chocolate Milk. I have milk after every single long workout or race. :)

After hearing about the experiences during night races, including the Wine & Dine, I think I would rather do the early morning races. I don't get any sleep anyway the night before so it ends up working out better I think. I think I would have a hard time falling asleep after a night race mainly because of the whole keep moving mantra. Am I turning into a morning person?!? Oh no!! ;)

Congrats on the Wine and Dine!!! Good luck training for the Half in January!! I think either way... morning or night races -- you don't get much sleep with a Disney race. You have to get up in the middle of the night for a morning race but it really doesn't matter because it is SO much fun!!

Thanks! Yeah...I'll definitely have my sister bring chocolate milk with her. I <3 my chocolate milk!!!!!

I'm not sure if I'm a morning person or night person...it can vary. But all my races have been morning ones, so I'm used to that.

My last race (okay, my only race) was at 7:30, so I didn't have to get up until the late hour of 4. I'm sure I won't sleep at all knowing I have to get up at 2 or 2:30.

Mine have gotten progressively earlier. The 10K I did on Sunday I had to be up around 4 to get ready and head via weekend subway into Manhattan to catch a 6:50 ferry boat to the island where the race was to be. Oh what fun that was. LOL.

I have been pretty lucky that the majority of my races I don't have to get up in the middle of the night. My last really early race was MCM last October. I can handle one or two a year;).
Thanks for all kudos on my run last Sunday. I am really proud of how fast I am getting all of a sudden. This Tuesday I did my speedwork session of 3 miles which I usually do in 8:30 min per mile, well I ended up doing 8:05 min per mile while pushing the double stroller!!! I am so loving this cool weather. What a difference it makes.

Depending on where you're staying and what your morning routine is, you might not have to get up that early. I didn't get up until 330 (Sat) and 345 (Sun) this past winter and had no problem making it to the bus line on time.

I agree with this, I don't get on the first bus for the start, there is no reason to. I got up at 3 for my first Disney marathon and didn't feel rushed or late or anything. There is plenty of time to wake up before the race starts at the start area;). I do like to have everything ready the night before, all I have to do is brush my teeth and get dressed in the outfit that I have laid out already that has my number already pinned to the front and timing chip already secured to my shoe and then pick up my packed bag. I think it takes me about 15 minutes from wake up call to out the door.

Do people tend to show up at 4am for the bus? Or is it safe to show up at the end of the pick-up window.

I have this fear of showing up at 3:55am (or whatever time is just before the time that they say you have to at the bus stop) and not getting on the bus.
