Official Dopey 2018 Thread

The OP can also look back in the Marathon Weekend 2017 thread or the Dopey 2017 thread and find the information there too.
I tried looking in the Marathon 2017 (went thru several pages, not all 300+, and gave up) and also googled it. I must have been too tired last night to see the google images, because now I see them. :headache:

Ahhh, okay. Very interesting. So, I'm assuming with the membership, you're guaranteed you bibs? Is there an official time to register or, for instance, what if I'm not sure about a race and want to sign up two months before the actual race? Not bad they include that two friends can sign up for races as well. Do you have to be signed up for a race in order for them to?

Thanks again.
@courtneybeth pretty much nailed it. Here are the currently available registrations. Princess finally sold out a week ago through them. They will process your order and send a specific active.com link for you to use to complete your registration just as you would through Disney. When I signed up I put both the membership and Dopey in my cart then requested to use a buddy pass for my friend also running Dopey, they gave her the okay and now she's signed up as well.

There's less than 10 Dopey reg left for RawThreads. Do it now or you may get shut out. The marathon is already gone!

Friends can sign up for races or distances I am not doing.

And yes! You could have signed up fur princess up until two weeks ago. You have to submit your proof of time at late registration and you'll get put into the correct corrals.

It's a good program for people who can't sign up right away and want to wait.

Sounds great! It's a real safety net for those that don't want to sink that type of money into something a year's time out. Honestly, if you had a friend or two you could actually split the yearly cost. Is it the same price every year, or more the initial one?

Thanks again. I've already signed up for Dopey but this is definitely something I'm going to look into.

That is awesome.

Just looking at the RawThreads site, any reason whey half is more than full? I know full is sold out, but thought that was weird. Looks like Dopey is $15 more too.

They add in active fees already. So the price you pay is the price you see! Sometimes it's at the same price or lower than Disney.

I know this is way early but has anyone had success following Higdon's Dopey plan? I followed his novice plan for the marathon and it worked well for me so I am planning on tackling that once its time to start really training for Dopey. Are there any other plans that you have found that worked well for you? I know Galloway also has a plan but I don't think I will do that one. Running four days a week seems to be the sweet spot for me or at least the most manageable right now.

I looked at Higdon's Dopey plan as a potential option and ended up opting against it. For my purposes, the mileages involved are just too high, too quickly for too long. 27 miles in Week 1 ramping up through 43 miles at the peak is just asking for injury for me. In my experience, all of 1 Goofy + 10k and this year's shortened Dopey, a good marathon training cycle is sufficient to prepare you for a recreational Dopey (ie, not trying to PR everything). From what I've learned here and through my own experience, a LOT comes down to each individual's mental makeup and tolerance for uncertainty. Our bodies are more limited by our minds than our muscles for a lot of distance running.

ETA: I should probably add that I am a big fan of Higdon's plans in general. I have used his half marathon plans with great success and I'm using one to get ready for Tobacco Road and RnR Raleigh right now. I used a plan from @DopeyBadger for my recent marathon PR that also worked exceedingly well with its balance of mileage, time and pace management.

I think the first question is what's your goal for the Dopey? The second question is what's your current average pace for a half or full. (If you have to run close to your best pace for the half and full to not get swept it may be a different training strategy than if you have a buffer) I'll base my answer on what I think fits most of the people running Goofy/Dopey. I'm going to assume the goal is primarily to finish, and that you are currently running a 14 minute mile pace or faster for a half or full.

So I just realized I wrote a long response below. The TL:DR is Any marathon plan should work, the most important thing is that you actually do all the workouts. Try to do some back to back runs on weekends.

This year will be my 7th Goofy (and my 2nd Dopey) From my experience if you are trained for the Marathon you don't need to really prep more for the 5k and 10k. I've used Hansons advanced marathon training plan to build my base for Goofy two years ago. I would mostly agree with the previous poster than if you are sufficiently trained for the marathon you should be able to recreationally finish Dopey. However, with every training plan I've done for either Goofy or Dopey I've always made sure I had several weekends of back to back long/longer runs to simulate the half and full. So for example last year I had multiple weekends with A 10 Miler on saturday and a longer run 16-20 miles on Sunday.

Hanson's plan is another higher milage plan and I found that when I did it my body actually felt better and I didn't struggle with injury. That's counter to Camaker's advice above, but I think you have to know your body. I wouldn't automatically assume more miles = more chance of injury. I think the chance of injury is highly dependent on type of milage, percent of milage that's in your long run and quick changes in pace or overall milage more so than just the total volume of miles. I think the important part of any training plan is that you stick to it, and that you don't try and cram miles in to make up for skipped workouts. Consistency is the key.

I used a Hanson's plan to train for the RNR Savannah Marathon last year, and it worked great for me. I was definitely more prepared and in better shape for that marathon than any other one I had run. I plan on using it again for Dopey 2018 with a couple of adjustments here and there.

Thanks for the responses concerning the plans! My plan calls for no PR for any race. Just finish in a somewhat reasonable fashion and in the upright position. I agree that Higdon's plan does seem to have a ton of mileage just starting at week 1 and I am hesitant to follow it because its just so much running (but who am I kidding...I did just sign up for Dopey). I have found that I do a lot better during training if I have something that I can go by each week instead of just winging it like I did a few years ago so I was curious to what worked well for people.

Here is a thread that @Keels put together regarding various training plans: http://www.disboards.com/threads/tr...wbies-guide-to-running.3545529/#post-56458000

It got a bit real again today that this is really happening next year. My parents are planning on coming to support me through the challenge, and are using their DVC points to get rooms... which means they're booking this week! I guess that can count for the next milestone figured out...
