Official Dopey 2017 Thread

Oh man, you and I run around the same speed, are both perfectly Dopey, AND work in the same industry? Although, I'm from CT, so there's the difference.... you have MUCH more money than I do due to all the extra taxes you don't have to pay. :rotfl2:

How fun! What place did you get last year? What's your current pot? We might be in the same corral this year. Mine is a 3:26 so looking at B/C. But hoping the October marathon takes me to 3:18 or less.

Both northerners for training too. How cool!

@opusone has a calc of somewhere around 915 for perfect dopey. Don't remember off the top of my head the exact number.

This explains a lot. :thumbsup2

Lol!

Right after I asked the "how many" question, I found there is a website http://perfectlydopey.com/. They are showing 864 left, but as with anything else is probably subject to the calculation skills of the creator.

A couple pages back (link here), I posted the Perfectly Dopey list which included 917 runners; however, I have since updated the analysis to better check for common full names, and we are currently at 907. I am now at a point where I think I am within 10-15 of the correct overall number. If anything, I think the number is slightly higher than 907 because the one thing I cannot easily check for is last name misspellings or name changes (marriage) over the years, so there may be a few perfectly dopey folks that aren't on the list, but I think it is minimal.

Not sure how to find out place, Disney seems to just publish an alphabetical list of finishers, right? Did I miss something? Either way, the goal that year was to see if I could do it sub-7hrs, guess I was just in better shape than I thought. Might be in the same corral, typically has been A for the 5/10k and B for the half/full. I ran a half a month ago that I plan to submit for proof of time, not running a full this year as I have a 70.3 that I'm training for and plan to take a little break before Dopey training kicks in. 3:18 marathon, looking for a Boston Qualifier? One of these days I'm going to have to actually go all out and train for a good full time. I like the challenges and tri's too much and think my wife will divorce me if I add this goal in without dropping one of the others! Ha!

Yes, the joys of the northern trainer! As long as the wind isn't bad, the temps really don't bother me. We get a really strange mix of winter here in CT and sometimes the coast is fine while 50 miles inland is as if you were in Canada (not that there is anything wrong with Canada).

You're right, Disney just publishes in alphabetical order, but not us. Here is a link to the 2016 Dopey Ranked Results.
Do you have one for 2015? :-) This year I was more of a "first's" guide. 1st 5k for my sister, 1st half marathon for my niece/goddaughter, and my wife's 1st (and she tells me, her last) marathon. Super rewarding to do this for someone, I highly recommend it. Did this for a good friend of mine for her first marathon during Dopey 2014 as well. Great way to keep from burning yourself out as well.

Not quite a BQ yet. I'm 31 so I need a 3:05 (but aiming for a sub-3). I'm not ready for that yet though. Aiming for that in Oct 2017.

Yea winter can be a fun time!

Good luck on the 70.3 training. If you want, join us on Strava (see my link in sig). We've got 47 people on there right now. All are welcome!

I really need to google stuff before asking questions... Found one that Runners World did for 2015 by cumulative time (http://rw.runnersworld.com/clean/dopey.html).

I stand corrected, you're much faster than I! (and a bit younger...41) Best of luck with the training for October! Looks like I was 122 from 2015, not that it really means anything more than an interesting tidbit, but good to know. I'll look into the Strava group.

I don't know about that (the faster part, not the younger part)... your Dopey PR is currently better than @DopeyBadger's Dopey PR. A little friendly competition never hurts.

Ahh, but as @opusone points out, you have the superior Dopey PR. Looks like I'm going to have to work just that much harder this coming cycle. :D

You guys are all very fast! Your Dopey times are just an hour or so more than my goal marathon time LOL. I think that's one of the things I love about running. Everyone fast and slow supports one another. I never realized this before and figured I would be all alone in the back forever... it's nice that it didn't turn out that way.

Completely agree on the support! There is a group of us Disney folk that came together back in 2008, most of us non-runners but thought it would make for a fun trip and meet up. A number of them are walk/runners and I have a HUGE amount of respect for them and how they complete a Dopey. It's not only the time on course, but the extra time in corrals and the wildly varrying speeds you find in later corrals (those groups that form a chain across the highway...). Not to mention the lines for characters...something speedy folks take forgranted for sure. I dropped back to the next to last corral for the 10k last year to walk it with a friend. Yes, the rainy 10k last year. Brutal standing there in the rain while watching "A" corral head out on course...then waiting for the next so many corrals to go before us. No chance at character pics due to lines and yes, I was finishing with the balloon ladies. Tough way to run a race, many props for those that do it this way! On the flip side, I've finished the marathon relatively quickly a number of times where I can get back to Epcot and walk/jog some friends in to the finish (get them through World Showcase anyhow). It is fun to challenge your own times, but the support of friends is what has kept me going this long.

Okay, I know I'm new on this thread and you're probably already sick of me... But wondered how other Dopey's liked to celebrate their accomplishment, or more specifically given that we just passed the 180 day ADR window, what are you're Marathon Sunday evening plans? For example, I booked an ADR at Le Cellier and plan to enjoy a nice celebratory steak. I've done this a couple of times, but have also gone to the Yachtsman and Monsieur Paul's in past years. Epcot seems to be the recurring theme....

This is my first Dopey but I booked Be Our Guest for Sunday night as I want to celebrate in the Magic Kingdom.

This is also my first Dopey so I'm still on the fence! Last year we did the full and ended up taking a long nap then having dinner at Shulas. Part of me wants to do dinner to celebrate again at Shulas because it was delicious but We're also going home Monday and I might want to do some drinking around the world. It's all up in the air still which is not normal for me. Probably Epcot?

We've stayed at POR for our three Dopeys and have done Boatwright's for celebration dinner each time. We are staying offsite this year so I'm not sure what our plans will be this time. We love Boatwright's and it's kind of a tradition so we will probably head there again depending on travel plans.

Me? After 4 super early wake-ups, I will likely eat lunch, hit a park for an hour or two to stretch out my legs, and then sleep for a few days. My legs will be fine, but I will be very tired for a few days, and I won't care about food for a few days. I find that I have to force myself to eat after marathons.

So I have a question for all you Dopey veterans. I am not a run/walk runner. I have done a few half marathons and my first marathon (with the 10k) at WDW in 2015. But I'm thinking of trying it for my first Dopey to keep my legs fresh. I was wondering when should I transition to r/w? My training right now consists of runs of 3-6 miles strictly running. Do I do the 5k and 10k running and the 1/2 and full r/w? Or the opposite? Or just try and run all 4 and walk when I need to? Sorry for all the questions!! Nervous newbie here. :crazy2:

I think intelligent minds can differ on what approach will yield the best results. I know I've seen it before on this board, primarily attributed to @DopeyBadger I believe, that we are all an experiment of one when it comes to running.

Personally, I've finished my three Dopey's running the 5K and 10K, going conservatively and stopping for a lot of pictures during the Half, and doing the best I can for the Full (I'd like to say running, but there's been a good deal of walking going on and not scheduled r/w). I've come out of each of them feeling pretty good with quick recovery from any muscle pain, so I'm relatively happy with how they have gone. I don't think you have much to be nervous about. You have finished a Marathon and I am of the belief that anyone who is prepared to run a full marathon can figure out a way to navigate the other three races and arrive to the Full Marathon ready to complete it. If you feel like you want to do run/walk it is really up to you and what gives you confidence in your preparation.
