I'm so glad that so many of you are getting some great cakes, especially out of the Grand Floridian. This is just a bit of a vent...I think I need it.:lmao:I too spoke directly to Pat and ordered a cake for my DD for her 21st birthday at our Garden View Tea last October. When I spoke to her I mentioned how in the previous year the cake I ordered for my DH's birthday at 1900 Park Fare never showed. She sounded shocked and apologized and promised me she would make sure that my cake would be delivered and wanted to actually look into the missing cake because there were several others that didn't arrive that December. We finished our tea and waited only to recieve our bill. I inquired about our cake and no one had a clue. Same thing happend last year and 2 years before I had ordered 2 mini castle cakes for my DD's and mine's mother/ daughter birthday trip. I had to go to the podium and then a few minutes later one arrived and it wasn't even decorated nicely like so many I had seen. So for me lesson learned. Three strikes and you are out. No more GF cakes for this gal and her family. I'll stick with Brian at the Contemporary. He's great and I at least got our beautiful anniversary cake. Good luck to all. Thanks for listening and make sure you call to verify a few days before.:goodvibes

i am ordering a cake to be delivered at our dinner at the grand floridian cafe. i know that the cost of the cake will be added to our bill, but how do i go about tipping? how will i be able to differentiate the waitors tip and the chefs tip? thanks so much!:dumbo::cutie:

Thank you PrincessSuzanne, you are correct, it was pecans or walnuts in the carrot cake I was just generalizing. My point was that you are not supposed to give a child under 1 any kind of peanuts and even though it was her 1st b-day we did not want to test her allergic reaction to nuts on vacation. We just did not know some people use nuts in carrot cake and the CM who took our order should have told us knowing it was for child. I love the Patisserie too! Have fun on your next vacation!

Not to trivialize your experence but I don't think everyone knows children under 1 should not have nuts. I don't have kids and have never heard this before. I am also suprised you had not had carrot cake with nuts before. I have never had it with out nuts and many times there are also nuts on the frosting.

The issue with nuts varies widely from parent to parent and pediatrician to pediatrician. My daughter had products with nuts before her first birthday.

There really isn't a way to tip the chef. When you leave a tip it goes to your server. Call me stingy, but I usually tip 20% on the meal only, not on the cost of an expensive custom cake. I just don't think that bringing it out and cutting a few slices is worth an extra $20 or more on top of the tip for the meal.

If you really want to do something nice for the pastry chef, find out his or her name from the person with whom you placed the order and then write a letter/email to Disney about how pleased you were. They actually do acknowledge those.

Hello! I want to have my son's 2nd birthday dinner at Chef Mickey's and most likely will be getting a podium cake as it will only be DP and I with the baby. Is there any way I can make the cake more special for him? Will they let me bring candles and/or a little topper to go on it?

Also, off topic, but do you know if I can get balloons somehow for him? If not, I will get some for our room that night.

Great, Thanks for the info!:dumbo::cutie:

I have had carrot cake w/o nuts. :confused3 And my son's first cake was a carrot cake sans nuts. :rolleyes1

Great question! We will also be doing a podium cake for DD's 12th birthday in March. I just can't justify the cost of a large cake for just three of us. I would love to take a little something to add to the top. We'll be having dinner at HDDR if it makes any difference. Thanks!

The restaurant usually has candles and, in my experience, puts them on the cake unbidden, before they bring it to you. If you bring your own topper, just try to flag down your server before the end of the meal and see if s/he will take it and put it on the cake. Otherwise you may just have to do the old "What's that over there?!!" routine and sneak it on yourself. ;)

You can work with the Disney Florist to have balloons delivered anywhere on property, including restaurants: 407-827-3505. Their prices can be pretty steep, though...

Since the fancy cakes can't be decorated with Mario OR Peanuts, I'm thinking about doing one of the mini-wedding cakes from Boardwalk Bakery instead. Does anyone know how much (if at all) they can be customized? I'm thinking maybe white icing with orange and black dots (for the Philadelphia Flyers) and then pay a little extra for some mini-topper like a hockey puck or Mickey ears. Realistic, or something else that wouldn't be doable?

Also---does anyone have the number for the Boardwalk Bakery directly? I have Jessi's e-mail but figured I wouldn't send her anything until I had settled on what I want.

I really enjoyed browsing through all the cake pictures. I ordered three cakes this week for our upcoming weekend trip. One is the pink princess cake with tiara and wand and the other two are cakes that I haven't seen any examples of. I asked the Contemporary crew if they could do a Big Thunder Mountain cake and they said they have before. Carolyn was going to try to email me a picture if she could find one but so far I haven't heard anything back from her. I ordered the other cake through Pat @ the Grand Floridian. The cake is for my Mom whose favorite character is Woody and whose favorite animal is a monkey. My girls thought a Toy Story theme that would incorporate Woody and the barrel of monkeys would be cute. Pat said they could do it so I am crossing my fingers that everything turns out OK! If not, I will never hear the end of it from my husband who can't believe I'm forking out this much $ for cakes!

emailed Brian at Contemporary on Tuesday and have not heard from him yet (Been 2 1/2 days) How long does it usually take? should I email again? I ordered a cake from him before but it has been over 2 years cant remember for sure but it did seem I heard from him right away.

i emailed him on a sat afternoon and hrd back from him sunday am. perhaps he is on vacay? or this is his "weekend" off instead of having a sat and sunday off? i would give it a few days, call back to private dining to ask if you have the right email and if he may be on vacay. if they say no he isnt by all means send him another.

Oh cake experts please HELP...lol

I have been viewing this thread for almost a year and I finally decided I am going to do it. My birthday is next Friday and we will be at Ohana for dinner. I would like an awesome cake but I dont want to spend more then $50...I know tough right lol.

It will only be DH, DS4 and me so something small would be good, especially since hubby doesnt really do cake. I only want buttercream and I hate fondant (dont like the taste or look). I would like something cool but I just dont know that I will be able to get something for my price. I dont want a standard looking cake with just something thrown on top.

I was thinking the mini 2 tier but I was really hoping for something a little more wow.

If all else fails I could go with the hickey head for $48...

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, for $50, from the Polynesian, that is probably what you are going to get.

The mini cakes can have plenty of wow factor, it just depends on what you ask for. I think the one I got at the Grand Floridian (which is where you'd order one from for a meal at the Polynesian) was pretty spectacular:

awesome.

That mini cake rocks?

How much was it.

I love cake so wont mind left overs with a 6" but we will get the cake friday night and we leave early sunday morning. Although we are driving so we can easily take it.

I think I would be ok with the mickey head...I see there are chocolate pieces on the side. Are these crunches of actual chocolate?

oh and any idea how much that mini cake with castle on top would be? And could I get dark chocolate instead of white?

And could I get dark chocolate instead of white?

A couple of years ago I was told that you could only get the castles in white since they were all pre-molded ahead of time (I was sorely disappointed). This may have changed, though.
