Official DISNEY Cake Chatter Thread - Part II

Same here! Ordered two slippers last year; did not have to leave a credit card imprint, nor did I receive any confirmation number. I called this in 2-3 weeks out and then about 1 week before, I called to confirm. Luckily, everything showed up and we were charged when it was time to pay the bill!

I just can't find my thread!!! I was wondering if anyone knew the number to Private Dining at GF? I want to order a custom cake for my daughters birthday, and the "Cake Chatter" thread says to call "Private Dining" but doesn't post the number.:confused3 Can anyone help?

I'm not sure if this has already been answered...but how far in advance should you order your cake? And when is the latest you can order it?

If you want a fancy, specialty cake that takes some time, then I'd say about 2 weeks, 3 weeks max. I wouldn't do it any earlier as then they have a chance of loosing the order. If you really want to order it earlier than that, then I'd definitely call a few days before to confirm.

The cake hot line says you can call up to 48 hours before but I believe they are talking about the simple cakes, not these fancy, specialty cakes. I wouldn't call any less than 5 days before.

I just ordered a cake from GF bakery. I have to say, there was NO pixie dust being sprinkled!!!! I called Private Dining and said that I wanted to order a custom cake for DD's birthday. (I don't know who I spoke with as she didn't give her name when she answered.) The woman kept pressing the premade cake. I had to tell her 3 times "No thank you. I would like a custom cake with a pirate theme". So she said "How many are in your party?" I said 3. She said "We will only customize a 10" cake and that is too large for your party. You need to order one of the premade cakes" I had to tell her that I didn't care how large the cake is, but wanted something special. (If I'm willing to pay for it why should it matter what size it is or how small my party is?):confused3 She then said, rather rudely, "Well ma'am, the decorations will be $45 extra and I can't possibly tell you what it will look like. It will be up to the chef to design it." I told her that was great, we'll all be surprised. I don't understand how some folks on here got such lovely and very specific cakes. And why are the filling choices so limited? I had to choose from custard with strawberries or chocolate mousse.:confused3 She really wasnt very helpful. Sorry to vent, I just wanted to have a fun time planning DD's cake and I just got the feeling that this lady simply didn't care. We'll see what we get!

how terrible.

you should just call back and speak with someone else - and make sure to ask for their name if they don't give it - that way they are less likely to be rude and if they are you can call their manager to inform them of your experience.

I have learned something from your post MinniesYooHoo, If when I call to order my custom cake I get a CM like the one you described I will polietly end the call without ordering my cake and call back later. Hopefully I would get a better experience the next time around.

Thank you for posting your experince, if you are unhappy with your filling choices, or lack of being able to describe exactly what you would like, then do call back and speak with someone else. You are going to be charge for something it should be what you want it to be...good luck and I hope you get a great cake.

Well didn't that just suck! I hope the cake is everything that you want. Let us know.

We'll be celebrating my niece's 5th birthday 2 weeks from tomorrow at the 1900 Park Fare. She's requested a cake with Minnie & Mickey.

I just spent the last half hour staring at and reading about Cakes at all the different Cake threads and galleries and...wow, can I just say you guys really do cover everything here at the Dis? ...Man! :thumbsup2 ...anyways, since my eyes hurt and I just can't do it any more -

Who has pics/stories/ideas about Minnie & Mickey birthday cakes they've ordered through the GF?

:goodvibes

This is what came to mind when reading your post. How about a cake covered in black fondant w/ white polka dots or maybe yellow or red or all 3. Then have some red bows (3-D) w/ white polka dots around the side. Then maybe a Mickey and Minnie topper of some sort w/ some red flowers. Then to finish the base you could have balls of fondant in the same colors as your polka dots. Just a thought. Good luck, I cannot wait to hear what you decide and then see picks!

I just ordered a mini wedding cake from the Boardwalk Bakery, my anniversary may be three weeks later but who am I to quibble with what will be a nice surprise for the missus. I forgot to ask the price but no doubt I'll find out soon enough.

I've noticed a lot of inconsistencies with the ordering process. There are a lot of decorated 8" cakes yet it now seems you have to order a 10" cake if you want something personalised. Another way for Disney to get a few bucks from you by forcing you to get a bigger cake?

Hey, that's very similar to our wedding cake in 2008! :cloud9:

That cake is beautiful!

What were the Mickey Ear toppers made of?

Any idea if just the toppers can be ordered?

I think that one Mickey Ear topper surrounded by chocolate covered strawberries would be a fantastic Disney themed treat for two.

Thanks!

The ears were made out of sugar. I don't know if they could be ordered by themselves. I think GF bakery made our cake.
It looks beautiful but unfortunately the taste wasn't that wonderful. It doesn't suck but it wasn't a blow me away kinda flavor... but heck, it looks good in pictures... :lmao:

Wow, thank you! I'm obviously a novice (I'll be googling "fondant" here in a minute ;) - but this sounds great! I'll see if some others post, then call the GF Cake people and hope I get a patient and helpful CM..

Someone mentioned recently that it seemed to be only the BoardWalk Bakery that requires you to order a 10-inch cake for customization. Meanwhile, people are being told that the minimum is an 8-inch at the Contemporary, while the Grand Floridian seems to have no problem with customizing 6-inch cakes. :confused3

I feel like a dolt for asking this, and I'm sure it's been asked but I can't find the answer (which is probably right in front of me.) I hope no one gets annoyed.

In December we're going to be staying at the Poly for my 30th b-day. I *really* want a cake, an anniversary cake if possible. We had the "mickey's delight" cake for our wedding, omg, it was the best thing ever. I'd like to get the same, if possible. I'm unsure of who to call-- Poly has private dining, but no bakery, and the cake line seems less than helpful. Can I get a cake to our room at the Poly, or do we have to eat at a GF restaurant to get the cake? It certainly wouldn't behoove DH to eat at 1800 PF again, but if we could get a cake in the room, that would be stellar.

What to do, what are my options? We may not rent a car, either, so the Boardwalk Bakery might not be an option for us.

Thank you!!

Well that all depends on what you want. If you want a basic cake w/ common flavors and butter-cream icing then it would be very do-able. We had one a few yrs back. We were married at the Poly and they made our cake. It was delicious. Ohana's made it. It was chocolate w/ chocolate moose filling. Ours that we got for our dinner out Ohana's was just as delicious. But, it did just have basic butter cream decorations. I went to look at the picks to refresh my memory and it was 5 yrs ago b/c it said Happy 5th anniv. and we're celebrating our 10 yr this summer. If you want something fancier then you will have to look else where, such as eating at GF or CR or ordering one from the Boardwalk. Good luck!

I am rather new also. I am trying to learn how to decorate cakes b/c I find it fun. I am trying to come up w/ a design for our 10 yr anniv and am now rethinking it to a something similar to this.
