*~~Official December 2016 Thread~~*

This is the first time we've planned a Disney trip & I have no idea if we will be back anytime soon. So I'm stressing trying to make sure everything goes smoothly. I haven't thought about the xmas party much because of all the other regular park stuff. I'm starting to realize that I need to relax a bit. If we don't get to do something it's not a big deal because we'll still have a great trip. I hope. Lol

You WILL have a great trip! Finding the balance between planning enough and not planning too much can be tough! As long as you go and you have fun, nothing else matters. If you take the time to stop and really, truly take in your surroundings, it will be successful :-):-)

We're in the exact same situation! I keep telling myself it will be so much more fun if we just relax and truly enjoy the things that we do get to do. It's going to be crazy crowded and there will be things that we miss out on, but at the end of the day we're not going to remember the things we missed, we'll remember the things that we got to do! I think it is so much harder for us first-timers because no matter how much we read and get others' opinions, we just don't know what will suit us best until we get there and figure it out for ourselves. I guess like parenting, ha!

Hello fellow December Disney Goers! Very happy to have found this thread! My 2 monkeys and I (DD 18; DS 14 at time of travel) will be enjoying a Disney vacation 12/2 through 12/11. We will be staying at POR. This will be a celebration of my DD's upcoming high school graduation.

I would love to know what everyone is most looking forward to? I know that's a difficult (impossible?) question as everything is fabulous and exciting. But is there something that you're just a bit extra-extra excited about that stands out for you, whether an ADR, a FP, tour, event--whatever that might be for you?

I'm looking forward to getting to know the group--it's a pleasure to meet you! :)

hey talby glad to have you join in and congrats to your daughter in advance you must be so excited for her. I graduated HS from a Californian school so our grad night was at Disneyland and it was hands down one of the best nights of my life. It's awesome that your able to do that for her. I'm excited for a lot of different things but if it works out the way I want it to I have an ADR at O'hana on a MVMCP night during fireworks time so I'm hopping to see holiday wishes over some delicious bread pudding. Im definitely most excited about that. My two favorite things food and Disney fireworks. :jumping1:

Hi! Glad you are joining us. I'm looking forward to my daughter's face when she first sees the castle. She's been asking when we can take her to see the castle for almost a year. I bought the Cinderella castle hallmark ornament & I might use that to announce our trip to the kids. We talk about going ("If we go to Disney do you want to do...") but haven't told them that we are actually going.

POR is one of my favorite resorts :)

Most looking forward to all the food places again and the Christmas program. We were there in April for the F&G which was beautiful-not as hot (but it was a bit warm-85-90) so we basically planed eating times at 3pm (while in the parks) to get out of the sun, cool down and get a break. This did work out pretty good because we didn't want to leave the parks for a midday break.

If its anyone's first time going- There is a lot to do-you wont get it all done, but its ok- whatever you do-it will be a blast. Only suggestion really is try not to run all over the place chasing fast pass and ADR's.

That is what I am most nervous about :) It's the first time I've been to wdw in almost 20 years! I am trying to be organized and flexible at the same time. But, I am most worried about the anxiety of timing fastpasses, rides in between fastpass times, and ADRs. I feel like i'm just going to be worried all day about "making it" to everything. Any tips to prevent the anxiety? :)

Your food plans will or are done before the FP time comes- so try to get your FP either before or after your meals in the same area if you can. I don't barrel through the parks trying to get a 4th, 5th, 6th FP-I'm completely satisfied with the 3 they give.

Getting to the parks early at rope drop will help if you want better wait times on some of the rides-Morning show at Magic Kingdom is super cool (never gets old for me anyway). So if you are at rope drop- try to have a nice lunch and rest, some folks go back to the room and take a nap- whatever. My Kids are 25 and 29-the only thing I explained to them before our April trip was to take walks-build your stamina (and get your feet ready) and get used to getting up a little earlier and go to sleep a little later in the day before we went.

We ended up being able to stay in the parks at rope drop until closing- were we still tired? absolutely, but we had a blast. I should also mention that my grandson was also with us (14 months old at the time) prior to the trip he watched all the fireworks and rides (videos) especially the Haunted Mansion- I upped the volume too, just to prep him so he wouldn't get scared- also worked out fine-little man had a blast and he really had fun with the character meals, seeing them in person was priceless.

I guess all I am trying to say is once you get into the parks- matters not which one- all the anxiety will go out the window- sometimes the plans too! but- it's no big deal, you will have fun.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! I have 2 little girls (4 and 6). They know about the trip, but don't know anything about what is there. We have a lot of character meals, and I think just that will excite them. I completely agree with the 3 fast passes! If I can get the ones I'd like on our three days at the MK, I'll be happy!

Thanks Rickat for the advice. I'm trying not to rush around too much but is a little hard when you have to make ADRs & fp so far ahead. We're going to try to do as many rope drops as we can to beat crowds. One of our biggest issues is my dd. She's not a napper but really needs one in Disney. We're going to play it by ear. Hopefully we'll figure out what works for us quickly.

Can you put me in For December 17th-26th at Pop Century? We love going at Christmas. I can think of no better place to get that wonderful Christmas feeling than Disney World. Have the ADR's done, and if I don't decide to change them, then I can say I'll probably gain weight this trip. Doing the Hoop Dee Doo Revue for the first time this trip. Going to see Cirque Du Soliel for the 3rd time, I hear they have some new acts. Can't wait, at 142 days.

I'm in the same boat as @rasadkowski and @dnllmz in trying to juggle ADRs, FP+, must dos, naps/ rest with a 2 year old! Hopefully, I'll be able to plan things to get a lot out of it! :) (bigger burden on me since DH does not care but I don't mind planning... just hope I don't over plan)

I'll add my advice for first timers if anyone wants it...in my opinion, one of the best ways to avoid criss-crossing is to make yourself familiar with maps of the parks well in advance of your trip. Understand how the "lands" of the various parks are laid out. We tend to find touring the parks in a circle is more efficient, and that's how we plan our FPs as well.

I will use the MK as my example, because I feel like it's the park that needs the most planning because of size, amount of rides, and general distractions (taking in the scenery, shopping, snacking, etc...). We tend to always start in Tomorrowland at rope drop, and during my past trips, parts of the park on that side have been deserted. We will do Space, Buzz, Dumbo, Goofy, Little Mermaid, sometimes meet and greets, Small World, sometimes a FP (Peter or Dwarfs), and Haunted Mansion all well before lunch time. Crowds really do tend to pick up around 11:00, and we generally start FPs to coincide with our location and try to time the first one (most of the time we do Big Thunder, Splash, and Dwarfs. We'll plan Splash and Thunder back to back, and Dwarfs either first or last. If first, we hit it while we're in the Fantasyland area in the morning, or last, after lunch, so we can ride it and then leave the park for the afternoon) to land somewhere within the 10:30 - 10:45am window. We'll do the next one with a time around 11:30 - 12:30 so we can catch it close to the end, then do the next 12:30 - 1:30 (this is just an example...sometimes we push them back to end around 2:30ish, which lines up close to the beginning of the FoF parade). We'll leave around that time (either just before or just after the parade), go back to swim and relax, then head back out for our dinner reservation if we have one, or go back after grabbing some food at the resort. Our evenings are usually unplanned, sometimes we pick up a fast pass before leaving the park and time it for 7pm-ish. We'll pick some up if we feel like it during the night, but mostly we just go where the wind takes us.

This approach tends to make us feel secure in that we have something planned, but it's timed out in such a way that it's incredibly flexible. I've never felt too tied down this way, and it offers a chance to take in your surroundings, which is one of the most important things to do at Disney World anyway!

Anyway, that's what works for us! To me, that's the beauty of FP+, I don't have to backtrack. It was rough to deal with that when we were at Disneyland last month, and I had to go back to getting paper fast passes before they ran out for the day, and hoping that they'd be for a time that would work. Because you do have the opportunity to plan FPs so far in advance at WDW(and you don't really *have* to, depending on your rides of choice, you can wait - but I'm not a waiter! Also, for certain rides, it's just a good idea to go ahead and make the FPs as soon as possible. But now that you're not locked in to making all three at once, you can make the hard ones and then add in the others later if you want to, or if you don't have enough time to sit and do everything at once), you also have time to make changes if anything happens before your trip begins. We've also had success changing entire days around the night before. I'm a diehard rope drop junkie (it's a flaw, lol) so I tend to automatically plan things around early mornings to get more things done. However, during our last trip, we really needed a day where we didn't wake up at the crack of dawn. So we changed every single FP time for the next day, and had no problem replacing the ones we had or changing the times to fit our new plan. We're taking a later approach with some of our days this time around, too, even though it's almost a given that we'll be up early anyway.

That's great advice! Thank you! I'm just starting to study park maps these days to see how we can tour more efficiently... but with a 2 year old, we might be stuck in Fantasyland most of the time! LOL!

Yep, Fantasyland will be your homebase most likely, LOL! My personal approach would be to figure out if you and any other adults or older kids traveling with your would want to FP or use child swap for, then figure out a plan of attack for Fantasyland. What *I* would do on a toddler-centric trip to MK (and keep in mind, I've never gone to WDW with toddlers, so I'm NOT any kind of expert on that) is :
1. Hit Peter first, followed by Winnie the Pooh, and then the rest of old Fantasyland, then move into New Fantasyland and the Storybook Circus area. FPs for second trips on Peter and Pooh, or use for the adults who want to do bigger rides later.

or

2. Hit Storybook Circus/NFL first and ride Dumbo a few times with no line (it's really empty over there early in the morning, in my experience), Little Mermaid, other Fantasyland rides with low lines, and then use FP for Peter and Pooh.

By the time you do those, it will be closer to lunch time, and you can assess how your two year old is handling the stimulation. If it's too much, you'll have done a lot of things in the morning and can rest, and if not, gear up for more!

If child swap for the mountains or other rides come into play, I'd plan those for after lunch or in the evening, and hit Carpets of Aladdin and Jungle Cruise with the little one while you're in that area.

----

For first timers, Josh's cheat sheets from EasyWDW might be a good thing to check out, too. I've never used them, but I use his crowd calendars and just enjoy his site in general :-)

I always feel weird when posting any kind of advice, because everyone has such different lives and styles, and everyone has different ideas of what they want to do/skip, etc, so when I do, it's in an attempt to help someone who might feel overwhelmed or unsure find a jumping off point.

Planning can feel so overwhelming the first time, but no one should let any fear take over, because that's a major mood killer on any trip, LOL!!
