Yeah, that was some victim story. According to Google, she and Ellen were only in a relationship for about 3 years. (She said the stigma ruined her career for a subsequent 10 years.)

But, Ellen was in another 3 year relationship after they were over. To a photographer, whose life and career wasn't ruined. And she is now married to actress, Jodie Foster.

Then Ellen was with Portia de Rossi, whose career also wasn't ruined. They are now married.

So, to blame 10 years of not being able to work, on the times, doesn't correlate to other people having same sex relationships after her and Ellen and being accepted.
