Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

No one spectates it. Not that I've ever seen.

My wonderful husband was a spectator when I ran the CC 5K, my first "official" run ever. He surprised me as I passed the water station outside the loop for the seconded time and he stayed there -- chatting with the CM -- until I ran past the fourth time on the way to the finish.

The CM confirmed that it was very unusual to have any spectators. -- Suzanne

I tend to insist that my DH and DS just sleep in. Meeting them back in the room and then disembarking together for the day at the beach seems to work out well. We all, DH and DS especially, just get so sleepy on cruises!

Well, two out of five (one double dip and I'm including the challenge) times, at least. But I've never asked them to disembark with me for the run. Once I insisted they take my stuff off but had to be off in time to meet jack sparrow, then by coincidence they found me right at the finish. And the one time we had a cabana DS ran with me so DH got up on his time and sherpa'd all our stuff to cabana checkin area. :)

Running is still very solitary for me, and having my people spectate is something I don't particularly need, especially early in the morning when I know they'll be grumpy. :)

Hi all! We're going on our first cruise in April on the Dream and my husband and I are interested in doing the 5K. Is there any childcare available during the time they run it? We have a 5yo and a 3yo so pushing a stroller is really not an option. Thanks for any info in advance!

Yes, Scuttle's Cove is open in time for the island 5K participants to use it. Take the kids to the meeting, leave the ship with the participants, and walking to the start brings you right next to Scuttle's Cove. Drop them off and join the herd for the start.

WOW I can't believe how far this CC 5K run has come!

I ran it years ago when it was in its infancy. Actually, it wan't even an event. There was a CM who liked to run and he would meet up with you before everyone else could get off the boat and take you off to do the run. We sort of all gathered around in front of the ship, he told us the route and off we went. It was so much fun running an empty island. There were maybe 15 of us. Most of the people were from the DISboards, that's how we all knew about it.

After the run, he gave us a little paper certificate that looked like it was printed on a person printer in a basement- LOL

We sail in two weeks, can't wait to do it again. Thanks to everyone for all the updated info.

Oh, and I agree, only a matter of time before this is listed as an excursion, and they charge $25 per person to do it.

We did it in August, 2011, on the Dream double-dip cruise.

I agree with everything you said, except when we did it, we didn't even get a "certificate" - just a sweaty bib number!!

DD ran the 5K last Thursday (1/22). Everyone got a colorful medal, with Castaway Cay 5K on it. She said the CMs told them they were the first race to get those medals. It was pretty nice, nice enough that she brought it home. And at 18, you know she's kinda picky about that kind of thing. . .she threw away a couple of the DVC things we were given.:lmao:

Do you have a picture?

We just did it the week before, on 1/16/2015, and we just got the generic plastic medals with the "WINNER" red ribbon.

Wow, you should have gotten the new ones! First group to get the new ones was 1/14 for the special cc challenge. Second group was for the free 5k just after the challenge on the same day.

The Rundisney people swore that the new medal unveiled for the challenge was the new 5k medal going forward. Maybe all the people doing it on the 14th obliterated their stock, or if you weren't on the Dream your ship just didn't have them yet.

I posted a pic of the new medal a few pages back.

The lighting is weird in my living room and I'm really jetlagged, so forgive the quality of those pictures.

Well, we were on the Eastern Caribbean Fantasy Jan 10 -17, and we definitely did not get these. Darn.

Are they going to do this medal next year too? I had the very start of a cold or sinus infection on the cruise that was causing some knee pain and asthma issues for me and I didn't run. When I saw the medals I wished I would have even walked half of it and crawled the rest ;) to get one they are really cool looking.

We have a B2B next year booked so I may have two chances to get them:)

I am really looking forward to doing this in December. If the ship is unable to dock, do they do some type of a run on the ship for those that have signed up or are you out of luck?

Since there is no fee, I doubt it. But you can still run around the promenade deck on your own.

Drat. What day that week?

I guess it's still true that they stock the medals on the ships, so if the ship hasn't gotten them they can't give them out.

Awe, back to plastic mickey head medals?

Maybe, maybe not. The first new-medal race was from the Dream, on the 14th. So far reports have come from people in the week or so after it, and I think it's about equal that some got the new and some got the old.

I'm sad if it doesn't come true, what rundisney told a theater full of people, that they are moving to the new ones for all island 5ks. It's going to take more reports to find out for sure, though.

My guess - and it's just a guess - is that since that poster's cruise began before the official runDisney CC Challenge thing happened, that is why they didn't have the new medals. Have we heard from anyone who sailed and ran on a cruise that started and went to CC AFTER that cruise sailed and the official event was run? It may be that either the bendy PVC medallions were not ON Castaway Cay until after the official cruise or that they were instructed that they were to be given to those on cruises beginning after the date of the official event.

As far as "clearing out stock" I thought people had said that plastic Mickey head on a ribbon was the same thing they used for various competitions on board, so I would think they'd just use them for that.

DH and I are planning our first 5k to be the Castaway Cay 5K! so excited! Question, I know that we can drop off our younger kids at scuttles cove but what does our 12 year old do? He doesn't wanna run and we do do feel comfortable letting him walk it alone. Any ideas?

Running a 5k is not as fun if you don't get the bib and medal though! LOL

That could be it.
Our cruise was on the Fantasy, January 10 - 17, but our Castaway Cay day was on January 16.

Hi all,
I'm new to this thread--I'm going to be on the Disney Fantasy in April. Very interested in running the Castaway Cay 5k. Wondering if anyone has run it from the Fantasy that can give me info about how to sign up/time it is held/anything else I might need to know. Thanks in advance!!
