Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

Hey guys, I've been running consistently again for about 10 months now & I am thinking something like the CC5k will be a nice thing to do & work towards.

I have a few questions as I cannot seem to find any information that isn't about the Marathon Weekend challenge dealio.

I understand it's free to enter? Do you have to sign up on the ship, before you board or do you just show up at the start?

Which is another question, what time does it start? Is it possible to run the 5k & also do a excursion? Or do the excursions leave before you would be done with the run? I have never cruised before but am going in May.

Thanks all!

The event is free unless you are doing it as apart of the new challenge that you would book through runDisney (the challenges is running a race at WDW then the 5K on the cruise only for dream 4 day cruise directly after WDW marathon weekend and princess half).

You sign up at the excursion desk before hand. Check your navigator to make sure. The race starts at roughly 9 am and you should be done no later than 10 depending on your speed.

It's free to run. If you get a ticket prior to getting to the meeting point then you just hand that to them and give you a number. If you don't have a ticket you give them your name and stateroom number and they write that down and give you your number. There will be a meeting place on board and then you'll all depart together and walk to the starting line which is by the bike rental place.

We were supposed to meet in Diversions on Wonder at 8:30am and I was back on board the ship before 10am after running the 5K in around 30 minutes and walking back to the ship so I'd say we actually started around 9:05. We booked the Seahorse snorkeling excursion (which ended up getting canceled) for the second day on the island and it started at 9:45am. I could have made it but it would have been really tight. Taking the tram back would have probably saved me some time but I would have pushed harder than I would have liked in that heat knowing that I had to be somewhere 40 minutes after the 5K started.

Hope that helps.

I was wondering if any of you had your entire group do the 5k? If so, is there a way to bring some personal stuff for the beach after you complete the run/walk? Or is the only option to return to the ship to get ready for castaway cay day? It would be nice if there was a way to bring suits to change into, but of course a safe place to leave your things while doing the race would be ideal.
Thoughts? Thanks!!

You can bring a bag with you and there is a big box by the start/finish line that you can leave it in. There are CM's around, but it's not secure (in that everybody's stuff is just in the box together), although I've never heard of someone having their bag taken.

You sign up on board at the CS counter. You will be given a ticket, just like other excursions, but it is free.

The start time is not really specific, just whenever they can get all of the runners gathered up, organized and walked off the ship (I don't think ours started until at least 9:30, possibly later). We didn't do any excursions on CC, so I'm not sure what time they typically start, but I would suggest not booking anything that starts before 11:30 to be safe if you plan on doing the 5k.

I think heat plus fitness level I would be finishing in about 30-35 minutes, I can comfortably run sub-30 minutes in the English rain.

If I wanted to book another excursion, specifically the nature walk/kayak trip. Would I be done with the run in time to also do this, or would I need to decide between the two?

I'm not sure what tine that excursion starts buy i would say anything before 11 might overlap as some have reported their race didn't start until 10.

Thanks guys for the information, is there somewhere to check when the excursions begin?

On the website it gives an approximate duration but no starting times as far as I can see. I assume I can sign up for these onboard, do they have a capacity they will close registrations at?

FYI that's not the women's cut shirt they had new last October. It might be the men's though. And a slim gentleman I had befriended during our long wait before disembarking for the run was buying one and bemoaning the smallness of the men's size too. No guarantee that they haven't changed the shirts again (that's why I always give the timeframe) but if they are the same I figure a heads up is good, especially if someone is having a DH buy them for them.

Absolutely. That goes for booking nursery time too.

That is the men's shirt. I have both from 2 separate runs. Doing run number 3 in February and hope the Castaway Cay Challenge stays for 2016 so I can get the awesome challenge medal then.

Once it's time for you to book excursions you will see the times for your sailing's excursions.

Dumb question: I'm planning to run the 5k on my cruise next month, but wanted to get in a few extra miles. Would the organizers object if I ran the course twice (or more)?

I did the race last week and saw someone doing the course again. Keep in mind it may be VERY hot though!

It's simply an open, public, paved space on the island. It's used for biking or power-walking, etc. Since I'm slow, by the time I'm doing the second loop (you loop twice for the 5K) of the, well, loop area, I'm surrounded by early bicyclists anyway.

I'm excited to do this on our upcoming trip too! I'm trying to convince DH to do it with me, but he's not buying it!
Does anyone know if you can use iphone apps while on CC? I use a couple while I run to track stats and routes.

Can anyone suggest a good app to keep track of time and distance. I'm new to running and want to take on the 5k, but I have to admit other than getting on my feet and moving, I don't really know what I'm doing. :confused3

Do you have any tips for signing up for the challenge (2016 hopeful)? I'm new to runDisney so I could use helpful suggestions.

Thanks.

The WDW Marathon weekend and the Princess weekend in 2015 also have the Castaway Cay Challenge.

You have to sign up for at least one of the events of the weekend, then you have to sign up for the Cay 5K challenge as well, and, of course, book that cruise. (and make sure that the cruise booking uses the right code to mark you as being part of the Challenge)

It's not cheap, that's for sure!

Looks like registration for the upcoming WDW Marathon weekend was in April of this year, so I would expect about the same for 2016's weekend. They announced the challenge after signups for it (but before registration for Princess, I believe). I assume that if this year's challenges go well* they'll continue it.

*I'm tormenting myself thinking "what if I've paid all this money for the challenge and we cannot dock at Castaway? what will THEY do? eep!".....

I like the NIKE app. It was free an told me when I was half way. :)

Strava and MapMyRun are probably my two personal favorites in regards to apps. A cool function of Strava is you can "compete" against others who run/ride the same courses as you so it makes it fun.
