Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

Does anyone wear costumes for the CC5k? DD7 is having a blast looking at today's Twitter pics from the Royal 5k. She wants DH to wear a tutu! He will totally do it, but only if others are. We have plans to do the Princess Half in 2 years, but I don't think DD will wait that long to see her Dad race in a tutu.

In running it twice, I've seen no one in costume. It's classified as "runDisney", but it's not like any of the other runDisney races (at this point anyway) as it's really more a fun run than anything else. Honestly, I doubt you'll see the costumes you do at the park-based events even if it does become an official paid event. There's enough to deal with packing that adding in a running costume just seems excessive. Everyone I've seen is dressed like they're going out for their regular morning run.

I have friends who run the CC 5K in costume. But they are serious runDisney lovers and run other races in costumes, too. Personally, it's too hot for me to run in a costume (ever! I'm in Florida), but if it makes your daughter happy, go for it! Who cares what everyone else thinks?

We will be wearing Tiaras and I LOVE the tutu idea. I'm still debating about running our shells since we are what I consider the official CC5k mermaids!

Do the 5k runners get off the ship first? Can our family come with me if we do? Or, do they meet us at the finish line? First time running a 5k!

Twice now we haven't been anywhere near first off the ship. But they've tightened things up since my last time in October.

My family got ready at their leisure both times. First time they got off the ship to meet Jack Sparrow and we all happened to meet up at the finish line, which is right there at the stop for the tram, at the same time. Second time they dawdled even more and after I finished I went back to the ship to get cleaned up (first time I did it on the island which was highly unpleasant for me) and we then disembarked together.

My family didn't want to get up early enough to leave the ship with me, frankly. :)

IEveryone I've seen is dressed like they're going out for their regular morning run.

Same experience.

I doubt anyone would care or judge if someone were in costume, but I just haven't seen it done.

We much prefer running in regular clothes! Maybe just special shirts & tiaras. We have a year to convince her.

I just did this on Feb 6. I was dropping off my 6 yr old son at Scutters Cove at 8:50am. They aren't technically open until 9am but we were able to check him in and they just sat on the benches by the entrance with CMs. By the time my friend and I got to the start line, they had just started running so we started about a minute later than everyone else. No biggie since it was for fun.
I didn't see anyone running in costumes. You probably can but be ready for massive humidity. It was about 81F that day and I'm used to warm since I'm from Los Angeles but it was HUMID, as expected.
By the time I finished the race and headed back to the ship to take a shower, I still saw more people getting off the ship. That was close to 9:50am~10am.
It was super fun, friendly environment. You'll all have lots of fun doing it. :)

*This was my first 5K run and I had just recovered from knee injury which required 6 weeks of PT. I was limping for 3 months. I trained only for 2 weeks using C25K app. I feel like 5K is totally do able for anyone. :)

2 1/2 weeks and I'll be there! Woohoo!

I am pretty sure I remember this being earlier...I even think I asked about it, but I am too tired this morning to go back through the thread.

My grandson is 2 so can't drop him off at Scuttle's Cover - he'd have to go to nursery. I don't think we want to go this route. Do I remember someone saying that there are strollers and he could be pushed? (that's if my daughter or son-in-law wanted to do that so they could both run)

I just ran the castaway cay 5k Saturday. It was humid but glad I did it. Yes you can go at your own pace, sadly several people didn't do the second lap of the bike loop so cut about a mile off their trip :(. There was water in coolers several places along the route. We met in a lounge at 8:15 and walked off as a group at 8:40 ish. We walked a mile to the start. The cast member explained the route and it was clearly marked. We were given plastic Mickey metals but were told we may be the last group to get them and the shirts for sale $22, there was no back stock, I'm guessing they are changing the logo or something. Great fun and organized with 2 cast members running the show. Will do it again next time! Very humid hydrate the night before and have a banana or something before you go. Again. Very warm and humid... And I'm from florida!!

i will be on the Dream for 3/30/14 and planning on running this 5K. I am very much looking forward to the run. I have my wife and 2 kids joining me on the cruise. Should i have them meet me on the island after the run, or should i go back to the boat and pick them up? I don't want use to loose the chance of getting a decent spot on the island chairs under some shade, unless there is a ton of them.

Anyone else running that is going to be on the Dream same time as me?

Very sad to hear that the tshirts and medals may not be there when I run. Maybe they will have the new ones...2 weeks to go!

I will be very disappointed if they don't have shirts to buy for it. It will be my first 5k and something to be proud of for me.

Question- probably a dumb one, but is there wifi on the island or will my iPhone be able to use my gps info at all with the running app I use to track distance: Map My Run on the ship when running on deck 4 or when completing 5k? I wasn't planning to use cellular while on vacation (airplane mode) but will use my phone for music and camera.

Short version: Yes you can track your run but you may not see where you are (if that makes sense) since there isn't WiFi.

Long kind of a complicated "technical" answer version: GPS will pick up signal on Castaway Cay, however without Internet your mapping program will not download maps so you won't see "where" you are until you get back to somewhere with Internet and can download the appropriate location maps. Most run tracking apps will still track coordinates based on GPS signal and record them on a "blank" map and will fill in the map data later when you look at the run back home. Also you can get GPS in much of the ocean however the running deck is covered so you may not get signal for tracking anyway. Some other ships have running tracks top side but none of the Disney ships do.

I had no idea you could still run your GPS on your phone and it wouldn't end up with an awful bill. Thanks for sharing.

When I ran on the Dream last summer, my Runkeeper app just showed a line back and forth. I think it registered me running a tenth of a mile total over 30 minutes (multiple laps around the 4th deck track).

However, Castaway Cay did not show up when I tried to pull it up on Google Maps. I did not do the CC5K or any running that day, so I did not check Runkeeper when I got home.

I am looking forward to doing the CC5K on our Fantasy cruise in July.

I ran the CC5K a few weeks ago and, as much as I would have liked to have had my wife and daughter meet me at the finish line (it was my first 5K), we decided that getting loungers on the beach was more important. I ran the race, they went to the beach, and I just met them there after I went back to the ship to change out of my shorts and into my swim suit.

My family is on the cruise with you and plan to run the 5k together (well, start together -- my boys are faster than I am and almost faster than DH). We have a post going on the Cruise Meets board and a more active FB boar if you want to connect before we board.

I am both on the FB page and Cruise Meets board and i didn't see anything about the 5K. If not meet before we board at least at the meeting before the run on the ship.

Mordecia- thanks for the info. Dumbing it down for me......I keep my iPhone 5 on airplane mode and then start my Map My Run app when I start the run. It won't show me the "map" around me, but should track distance and let me know how far I've gone as I move thru the 5k, right? Same would apply to on ship but maybe less accurate, right?

Has anyone specifically tried this with this app and an iPhone5?

Thanks!

I did the 5K on 2/21. I had been using the C25K app on my phone. I also use MapMyRun. I used my iPhone during the 5k in airplane mode. Neither program showed my route after I was finished. C25K recorded that I completed a workout, but it showed 0.0 miles. MapMyRun did not show a route, nor the total miles, but it did calculate calories based on the amount of time I was running. I saw a screen shot of someone's C25K app that showed the route. I'm guessing she had used cellular data. HTH.

FWIW, it was really hot and humid, and I live in Florida.

Thanks Jodi - I was really hoping it would show me distance run....since I will need that motivation to keep going especially with the humidity and heat. I guess whether I run the entire thing or walk part of it....I've burned calories to offset my increased food intake:)
