Tom Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, shared exciting updates about Disney's Animal Kingdom at a D23 event in Japan.

Q1. When is the AVATAR-inspired land opening?
A1. While elements of the overall expansion of Disney’s Animal Kingdom will open in phases, we anticipate the opening of the Avatar land in 2017.

Q2. What can you tell me about the new experiences coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom?
A2. The information in the Disney Parks Blog is all we have to share at this time. We look forward to sharing additional information in the future.

Q3. Where in the park is this new land being built – an existing location or is it an addition?
A3. The new AVATAR-themed land will be located between Africa and the Oasis and will encompass and expand beyond the area currently known as Camp Minnie-Mickey.

Q4. Why AVATAR?
A4. AVATAR is a uniquely powerful franchise that has global appeal with audiences of all ages. Its spectacular settings, intriguing characters, imaginative creatures, and strong themes of family and loyalty make it a perfect fit for Disney.

Q5. What will the new attractions be like? Will there be a new E-ticket attraction as a part of this land?
A5. We are excited about making AVATAR real for our guests and everything about the land – from the floating mountains to the bioluminescent plants to experiencing what it feels like to ride a Banshee — will fully immerse them in the story. We want to save some of the magic for later but I can assure you there will be something for every member of the family as part of this expansion.

Q6. Will the animals be disturbed/harmed by all of this evening activity?
A6. We will continue with the experts on the Disney’s Animal Programs team to ensure the safety and proper care of all the animals who call Disney’s Animal Kingdom home.

Q7. How does this fit into Animal Kingdom theming?
A7. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the perfect fit for the land of Pandora because the park was created to give our Guests the opportunity to experience the worlds of animals and nature – real and mythical – in whole new ways.

Q8. Is the Festival of the Lion King show closing?
A8. The guest favorite “Festival of the Lion King” is moving its tribal celebration of Disney’s animated classic, “The Lion King,” to an all-new theater in the Africa section of the park.

Q9. When is the new Festival of the Lion King theatre opening?
A9. We look forward to sharing more information in the future.

Q10. What will happen to all the Disney characters who currently appear at Camp Minnie-Mickey?
A10. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse have already moved to their new home base at Adventurers Outpost on Discovery Island. After Camp Minnie-Mickey closes next year, Guests will be able to find many of their favorite Disney characters in new, immersive environments being created throughout Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Nice to see them keeping us informed on this, hope it continues. I hope they add a lot of dining options in the new area, AK needs it.

Maybe a raw / sushi bar? could have flotsam and jetsam eel on an ursula unagi roll.
