Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

Just finished, literally at 11:02pm, my last long run before the GSC AND my longest run ever. 14 miles in 2:37:10. My 13.1 was 2:25:59. Last 51 weeks ago was my first half marathon with a 3:06:45 finish. I know it isn't as fast as many of you guys but I am super excited as it is amazing for me!!

Great times. Faster than me.

My trial run with costume on will be this weekend.

Well, this past weekend was a combo 5.5 and 14 mile extravaganza... and it was rough! Even though the temperature was great on Sunday (mid 40's), the wind was constant and gusting up into the mid-20mph range. My wife and I finished slower than we wanted, although I guess it was still within a decent slow, Galloway-style training-run pace.

Now, we just wait for the Main Event!

On a similar topic, I was kind of surprised that the 14 miles were so hard. Last year, we ran our first marathon, so 14 miles should be nothing, right? :scared: Right? o_O Not to mention, we had a half-marathon PR back on November, where our pace was 3 minutes faster per mile than it was yesterday.
Does anyone else see such a huge swing in a relatively short time?

Anyway, I'm very glad we were able to complete the challenging part of our training. Bring on the taper!!!

Doug
Absolutely. I've run multiple full marathons, dozens of halfs, and yet there are some days where running 5k feels like going through molasses and my pace is up to :30/mile slower. There are so many factors that affect your run, especially with wind and cold being present...I wouldn't worry :)!

I got the runDisney ones in the mail the other day and I am so excited to wear them! I figured I could wear those every race weekend since they're not race specific..

I had emailed her double checking on when they would ship out, didn't hear back, and ended up posting on Instagram finally. They arrive the day I posted on Instagram, but shipping notification, even just a comment on the Instagram post where they were sold would have been nice.

Glad to hear you guys got them! I have been struggling with her as well. Two weeks ago she responsed to my email (from a week earlier) saying my scarf was packed and ready to ship. But she didn't have my address- because she never sent me an invoice. That took another week- and another email from me. So now she has my money- a week later still no shipping notification. I emailed her this morning again- asking when it would be shipped. I am going to give her another week or so before I contact paypal and get my money back.

Too bad seems like she has a great product- although we all wonder where she got the fabric from? Spoonflower is possible but would they risk a Disney logo???

You all are such an inspiration!! Completing a half marathon is one of my goals in life. First I have to figure out how to run a full 5k!

Good luck on the race!! Can't wait to see how much fun you all will have!

If I can do it, you can do it!

You can totally do it! I didn't even start running a year ago. It just takes time and practice.

So just had a nightmare that I left my running gear home for the race!>:(
Seriously though, could use some advice: Since the fall of 2014, while training for the Goofy Challenage, I discovered that my running shoes weren't going the distance with me. I bought a brand new pair, but that did not help. This past weekend for our long run, I decided to see if my shoes would go the 14 without me switching them out---that was a big mistake. It seems as though my shoes will consistently get me to the five mile marker, but after that my knees start hurting. Any thoughts?!

Did you get fitted for shoes? It's possible that your shoes aren't the right shoes for distance runs. For example it was suggested that my shoes are really only good up to a 21mi run. If I was planning on running marathons I would need shoes better suited to that. I would suggest talking to someone at your local running store and seeing what they have to say. They may have advice on how to get through this race and plan on better shoes for future races.

It seems a little late in the game to be switching up shoes. No way would I be going in to next weekend with an untested pair. Have you tried taping your knees?

Good thoughts! I only go to my local running store and my favorite long distance shoes are my Newton shoes. Before they would carry me the distance, ran my first Goofy (2013) in them and had no problems. My trainers are Asics. When I go to the running store, I will ask them about the distance for my shoes, good idea!

Haha! I feel the same way--I don't want to switch anything up for sure, but I have never used tape. Would this be a circumstance where something like KTtape would be helpful?

Tapking may or may not help you, it would really depend on what the underlying condition is (i.e. is it a biomechanics issue with your feet vs knees vs hips vs back vs combo that could be throwing off your running mechanics). I would be very careful about trying tape if you've not been trained to apply it properly, especially this close to the races. I've seen people do more damage inappropriately placing the tape in the long run. I would recommend a physio assessment, or sports medicine

Hey all... Quick question, and I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but a quick glance through the thread didn't answer my question: I am running with three friends, and one of us didn't have a time to submit, so we are all in different corrals: E, G and M. Even though we are all at different running levels, we planned to run together for a fun, non-competitive experience. Is there anyway to switch up corrals? Or anyway for that to happen?

FYI, the expo has a KT tape booth where the will tape you. Can be a long line, but might be worth it.

Also, regarding shoes, it is not ideal, but I will say I changed my shoes 1 week before my first GSC in 2014. I was having outside knee pain and was suspicious of my shoes, even though by mileage they should have been good. Went to my LRS and they said my shoes were totally shot. They know me and know I alternate shoes between runs, and said they still would not wear them for the race. I got a new pair. Wore them around the house all weekend (there was a blizzard so I was stuck in) did a short easy run Monday and they were ok. Flew to WDW Wednesday and wore them around the park Wed and Thursday. Let them rest Friday, and then wore them for the 10k and half. I did wear my old shoes around the park after the races, but no running. I am definitely not suggesting this, I was worried I'd regret it. But in the end it was good. Now, in addition to mine wearing out, it turned out as I'd become a regular runner I had changed my gait. So I had been wearing Adrenalines for over pronation, and no longer needed them. I had become a neutral runner and the control shoes were likely a big part of my knee pain. If you are still happy with you type of shoe, perhaps your LRS can recommend an insole that will help you out with the distance.

Good luck!

You can all drop back to M. Runners can drop back, but not move forward.

I don't want to say it's the best idea, but I had a similar situation last year. I had been running in Brooks Ghosts for a couple years, but for some reason the Ghost 6's KILLED my knees. I suffered through training, and finally had to give up. A week before a half marathon, I bought a pair of Nike Vomeros. I wore them pretty much continuously for that week, and had a great race.

Again, I'm not saying it was a GOOD idea, but if you find the right shoes, it can be a life saver (or in my case, Knee Saver) even without a full break-in period.

Can anyone tell me, is the water at the course water stations filtered, or does it have that distinctive "Florida" taste?

It is late, but it might be better than just taping and hoping it goes away. That is literally like putting a bandaid on the problem, and you could do serious damage to your knees.
