OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

Don't let one race get you done. I had a situation this year where I ran a half marathon in Maui. I was so pumped up for it that I started out wayyyyy toooo fast. I was finished by mile 8. I had to walk/run the rest of the way. I still had a decent time because of how fast I went out, but when I crossed the finish line, my wife had me sit down because she could see I was going to pass out. I survived and didn't have many problems, but I was so disappointed in myself for ending the race so terribly. The positive side of this, about 6 weeks later, I learned from that experience and I ran another half marathon in Pittsburgh and it was the best race I ever ran. I felt strong at the end and sprinted over the finish line. It is a much better feeling to be the passer, rather than the passee at the end of the race.

Take this experience and learn from it. Go over the race again and see what you did right and what you did wrong. You'll have a much different outlook on the race after you figure out where things went wrong and how you can improve! Maybe with the sun, you just need to go slower in the beginning to save up some energy for that sun. You'll figure it out and the next race will be so much better!

Thanks for the encouragement and advice, Diskidatheart. A week later, I definitely have a better perspective, and have thought a lot about the race. I do think I probably went out too fast, but I think my biggest problem was I let the sun and getting hot freak me out and at one point, I just gave up on actually running, figuring it "didn't matter anymore." I regret that now, and wish i had kept pushing and trying, but all I can do is try again and remember this for next time. There will always be a next race!

I just made our room only reservation at Port Orleans Riverside, which is exactly where we wanted to be for the marathon.

I think I might have read somewhere on this board that you could potentially walk to the corrals from this resort. Am I correct on this? Not a big deal if we cannot.

Technically yes. Would I? No. It's so dark on race morning and it's not an easy road to traverse. You may also end up with soggy shoes as you have to cross a ditch.

You can definitely walk from POR. you do not have to cross a ditch, there is about 200 yards down a "busy" road with no sidewalk that you have to walk down from the POFQ entrance to the corrals.

I walked last year for the Goofy and was very happy about my extra hour sleep each day.

A suggestion for those walking....bring a couple plastic grocery bags and rubber bands.

Put each foot in a bag, then double bag it, then put a rubber band over your ankle to keep the bags in place.

If it has recently rained, or the grass is moist from the morning dew, your shoes/socks can get wet and lead to blisters later on in the run.

Not that blisters are a 100% certainty, but it might help avoid any issue as you walk through the grass.

Are you taking Disney Vacation Club Way or Overpass Way? Overpass Way definitely has a ditch.

Just signed up for the Frankenfooter Half Marathon here on the FL west coast on Oct 27, to try to get a corral placement time. I'm going to be slow, but I'm hoping to be fast enough to get out of the last corral for the marathon :cool1: so I don't have to worry so much about getting swept...

This is my strategy too :rotfl: I have a half on October 19th!

I exited POFQ on Bonnet Creek Pkwy and walked on the side of the road to Disney Vacation Club way. No Ditch that way.

This is what the Corral looked like after leaving my room at 4:25 for the Half Marathon last year.

Just sharing... (and this is not news to some who are on multiple threads I am sub'd to) but after struggling to replace my beloved brooks pureflows (the 2's came out and they were NOT the same) I came across the Adidas boost. I have a heck of a time finding shoes that are "perfect". Luckily, this time I only had to send back a couple different shoes (well, the 2's I had 3 different ones before switching to the mizuno wave rider 16) Also..I am glad that this time I didn't end up injuring myself in the process. So far, I am loving them! I hate that I had to return a few shoes to get there...but I think these are keepers. :cool1:

I am running the half marathon for the first time. Can someone please tell me where I can get my picture with Mickey on the course?

He's usually with Minnie behind the castle right before you run through. I've seen other people's pictures where Donald and Daisy were there instead so I guess they switch out but I've only seen Minnie and Mickey there during all my Disney races.

Alot of the Brooke Pure series changed ther models this last year (went to the tongue that connects on one side), but alot of the older models are still out there online at BIG discounts. I just bought 4 pairs of the Brooks Pure Connect and all them them came out to right around $50 shipped right to my house from runningwarehouse.com.

Based on this I just booked POFQ :-). I can always use some extra sleep!

The other thing is the waiting before we're walked back to the corral area stunk! Takes forever. And the weird thing is I can run for a few hours and my back is fine, but standing still for 45 minutes makes my back hurt. Seeing that nice empty corral photo tells me I can bypass that cattle chute to the corrals, and with extra sleep!

Thanks for this post, that pic said a 1,000 words!

OP Here! Update:

Sorry I've been away from the boards and this thread for 5 months, and was not able to keep up with the list of DISers who are running this WDW marathon weekend. I had a couple of running injuries and health issues, and couldn't bear to think that I was not able to run this with you. But thanks to my doctors and positive vibes, I am back! Thanks for keeping this thread alive and supporting each other. good luck to all runners and thanks to all supporters! :cool1:

I tried and tried to get mine in my size... but nope. All works out though cause these boost seem to be a really nice fit for me!

Does anybody use KT tape? I've been happy with the results I've been getting, but after the first mile I just can't make the da*n stuff stick! And it's REALLY starting to make me :furious:. I follow the directions to the letter and make sure my skin is dry and clean when I put it on. I've been using the regular tape and not the Pro. Yet. Thinking about it but hate the idea of wasting more $ if it's just as bad. Help! :worship:
