Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

Okay so I am another person behind the 8 ball on training. Something like a cold or a flu kept me back for a few weeks...just extremely tired that even walking a mile was grueling.

I did walk a hilly 13 miles on Thanksgiving morning and then again on Saturday morning. My plan is to build up and actually do 26.2 miles sometime in later December...this month..wow...time flies.

So as of now we have another 36 days.

My biggest comfort is knowing I did this , this past year...the Goofy with a 5k...so I know I can do it...I just have to do it now...build up.

Let the nerves begin. First race rehearsal this weekend. 4/10/19. Week recovering then try it again by adding a mile. Guess ill know how good or bad the challenge will be by Sunday.

I'm still on the injured list. I'm up to 1.5 per day, and its getting better. My stride is still really messed up, so I am hoping that I am not doing muscle or tendon damage elsewhere as I compensate for the current injury.

OTOH, this is not my firs time at this, and I have done it undertrained before. As long as I can get to the start line uninjured, I can finish it.

Good Luck

Come on, it's another 41 days.... I guess my focal point is getting to the line Sunday with at least the half complete. Anyway, the 40 something count seems so much longer than the 30 something.

My countdown has 36 days until arrival, 37 till the expo.

Well yes your are correct in that the full is 41 days from today...and I guess the start is really in 37 days but the expo is in 36 days....I think I have that correct.

I am getting nervous...the reality of it all is starting to hit. This is what happened to me last year...December is the 'omg its a month away!' jolt.

I am looking forward to it...excited ... nervous...

I was trying to be a little funny.... I need all the extra days mentally that I can get.

I agree 100%...now that we are in December, I feel like OMG, what have I gotten myself into.:scared1::eek:

Pulled out my second 4-day Dopey rehearsal over the holiday last week - all with a head cold that settled into my chest but not until after the last run! I'm on the good drugs now, taking one midweek run off this week, I think, and getting ready to solo in Messiah performances (3!) this weekend. Never a dull moment. Here's what my Galloway e-coaching had me do last week - I pulled it all up to start on Wednesday as Sunday was a travel day for us:

Wednesday - run/walk 5K
Thursday - walk 5 miles
Friday - walk 10 miles
Saturday - run/walk 24 miles

Saturday's start was 15F at 7am. I actually felt pretty good at the end! I feel as ready as I'm gonna get. The last repeat rehearsal goes farther than needed, and I'm wary of that. I think I'll take the long one out to 22-23 and the half one out to 11-12, with the full 5K and 10K on the first two days.

This thing is getting real up in here...

Woo hoo!
In one month's time, the suitcase will surely be out & partially packed! My gold Mickey Ears :earsgirl:will be the 1st thing packed in my carryon!

Hey, all! I had been a lurker early on, but then did not had much time to keep up w/ this or other threads.
I'm taking this weekend/week to re-read the thread & related for any gems of wisdom! :surfweb:

(lol, the first 30pages or so are mostly pre-registration rumours and hysteria! )

I do 10 & 1s (run 10mins, walk1 min), and I'm doing the Galloway Training for the Dopey.
Although this will be my 1st marathon, I'm looking at this as more of a fun Disney event. (planning on my 1st "serious" marathon in Fall 2014, maybe in Ontario: Hamilton or Toronto)

After this weekend's walks/runs, I'm confident I can do the 4 distances & have no concerns of being swept even if I end up needing/wanting to walk a lot of the last of the marathon.
(It was bitter cold on Sunday, and I took 2 tumbles, one on the frozen rocky non-sidewalk, and the other was a slip on an icecovered sidewalk.....this is part of why you see runners on the roads! no harm done, "other" than bruised, cut & sore shoulder/elbow/hand/thighs/knees! lol!)

Looking forward to reading the rest of the thread & especially anything shared in the coming weeks! Thank you all so much :worship:

(posted this on the Marathon Thread when I meant to post it here in the Dopey Thread! lol, One minute the thread I was reading (Dopey) had about 61 pages, next minute it had over 100 pages! I switched threads without realizing it!)
Thanks, G

Thanks to some magical genius friends of mine, I know my bib number is 33349! I cannot wait to see what my corral is!
:dance3::cool1::dance3:

ooo! wonder if all the dopey folks will begin with "3"?? congrats on getting your number so early! that's fun!!!:cheer2:

So I have a training conundrum. I'm scheduled for a 20 miler this Monday, but it looks like there is a good chance of rain/freezing rain in the area starting Sunday and lasting through Tuesday. So I'm thinking I may try for the 20 miler on Saturday, but I don't have a solid 4-5 hour block that I would need to get it in. (Yes, I am not speedy.) So I'm thinking I will run the first 10 miles then come home and play chauffuer for 45 minutes or so and then come back and finish the last 10 miles. Does that still "count" as a 20 miler? I also have a 22 miler on the schedule for the 18th and then I'll begin the taper.

Has anyone heard if they are going to time the 5K this year? I remember speculation that they would have the Dopey runners start up front, any further speculation on that? I am just looking for any unverified rumor since we will know more in a week or two...but I want rumors NOW!!!!!!!

:thumbsup2Whew! Got thru all the postings on this thread.
Lots of food for thought.

Speaking of food, I'd like to try to nail down a good strategy for nutrition to get me thru the Half, recover & refuel, and then thru the Full.:stir:

I know there's that 30min window right after when it's great to get a 3:1 ratio of Carbs/protein (like choc milk, or banana & Pnutbutter), & the 2nd 2-3hr window another poster mentioned as being optimal to replenish the glycogen stores, & allround aid the body in rebuilding muscle, etc (healthy meal with a bit more protein than carbs, but also some healthy fat).

I'm hoping that some of you experienced runners, who have done the Goofy, and especially the unofficially Dopey, would share specifics of what did/did not work in terms nutritionally for you between the runs? (I mean Runs, not "runs":scared1:)?

FFigawi shared back in May
  • PreRUN: 2hrs pre: ClifBar. 1hr pre: Bottle of Powerade. 10min pre: 1 gel
  • During the RUN: Water/Powerade often, and then gel/bloks ~45mins apart for the Half, ~45-60mins apart for the Full. Also salt tabs hourly if hot.
  • PostHalf: Beer during Icebath (FFigawi, we must have been trained by the same person!), Healthy lunch. Dinner of light carbs, easy protein, salt: eg Sushi)
:thumbsup2

I'm not so worried about those early mornings!
Our time zone is 1.5 hrs ahead!
5:30 Disney is actually 7:00 NFLD time.. and a standard AM run is 8:30
I think coming from east of Florida gives me an advantage!
So I'll be doing everything 3hrs earlier by the clock, but will only need to adapt my inner clock by 1.5 hrs!
The plan is to start living that timeframe right after Christmas!:santa:

I go by the general rule that fluids stop completely 2 hours before gun time, and start up again at mile 3. It cuts down on bathroom stops for me.

was everyone able to figure out their bib numbers? will we have to use the same bib for all four races?

doing my first 4 in a row this weekend. i was delayed after a stress fracture in my foot that had me booted for a little while. it will be slow but that's ok :) just looking to finish!

hope everyone enjoys that "omg what corral am i in??" frenzy! with more corrals it will be fun to hear the announcers think of different descriptive words for each corral :) "P corral! P corral are the picky ones" ;)
