Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

"We are each an experiment of one".......the author....http://www.georgesheehan.com/welcome/bio.html

I will be keeping the article in mind during Ironman Florida in 2 days, the Space Coast Half Marathon in 4 weeks, the Dopey in January and the Celebration Marathon also in January.

My renewed life started at age 60, three years ago, and I hope to be able to continue on this new path beyond age 75 despite the fact that my body is already falling apart.

I'm out there to complete while having fun.

Enjoy your Dopey, everyone. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

It really does not matter the brand, style or color....

You should be running in a couple pair anyway and rotating them between runs. A common shoe strategy is to break in a new pari of shoes about the time your current shoes are about half used up. That will usually give you one pair that feel a little off and one that just feels great.

On race weekend, tun the 5k and half in the older pair and the 10k and full in the newer pair.

I really loved the impact Dr Sheehan had on the sport.

Excellent! Thanks for the tip--I was wondering how I should rotate through shoes. I figured on two at the least--sometimes that FL humidity makes my legs sweat so bad that it runs down into my shoes.

Would I look silly with sweatbands on my ankles? LOL
:lmao:

This drives me crazy :drive:

I post from one of three computers and only one does not have spell correction on this website. Guess which computer this came from.

I would also add that there are a few folks who think of running in two styles of shoes for Goofy or Dopey. The thought pattern is not bad; run in your training shoes for the half and a more cushioned set for the full. I do see a couple of issues with the theory. The issue is that you may not be a runner who should be running in more cushioned shoes. Also, if you are not training in the shoes you plan on running the marathon, you may run into pre-mature cramping as the little secondary support muscles are forced to work harder than they did through training.

If asked this far out, I discourage this idea. If you ask me on January 3, I just roll my eyes a little and ask about training. Either way, you are not going to do anything that creates permanent damage, but it could lead to a less pleasant marathon.

I dunno, I disagree with the idea that you could get to marathon weekend and even ask that question. Wear whatever shoes you wore when you trained in the 4-in-a-row back to back runs. Rotate the same way you did every week in training.

I would have thought that, but I was asked if I thought it a good idea in early January a couple years back. Just kind of rolled my eyes, asked about training and said it's kind of late to change.... Have a great race. :rolleyes1

Not sure that erson had ever run a marathon prior to Goofy weekend.

My first marathon was part of a Goofy. It wasn't that big of a deal.

Did a trail marathon 2 weeks ago and I think I might have messed my ankle up. Have a full at OBX this weekend, I'm hoping that it holds it well enough so that I can prove to myself that my goal Goofy time for this year is realistic. (I'm not worrying about time for the 5 and 10k)

My first marathon was goofy weekend, but I did the 5k and Marathon only. My second Marathon will be Dopey, and I can't wait!

i mean, it's not like i didn't know how long dopey was going to be...but after sunday's marathon, i'm really starting to wonder about this whole decision to do dopey!

i haven't been able to run since. i have some VERY bad blisters all over my right foot that i need to let heal before attempting to run. my foot is very swollen so i can't put a running shoe on anyway. the podiatrist put me in one of those ugly shoes and a soft cast for a few days because he suspects a stress fracture because of the swelling. i don't think it's that, i think i'm just really retaining alot of water.

JG was my e-coach for the marathon and said that for dopey i can just pick up on where the training is. this week was a 20 miler but i will pick up next week with the two cut-back weeks. my foot needs to heal and we're leaving for 2 weeks in hawaii on thursday (woot!). i will make sure to run at least 3x week while there.

anywho, just talking out loud. this is serious business. my game plan is changing dramatically for the weekend and it will involve ALOT of walking.

ps - i managed a 31 min marathon PR on sunday! january wdw was my first marathon and nyc was sunday. thank god WDW isn't as hilly!

:woohoo: with the PR. Remember, you're not in it to make a living so relax and enjoy. I think some people are beginning to realize things are quickly approaching and might be adding a bit of self doubt pressure.

Blisters. Swollen feet. Did you wear the correct running shoe? I would have ended up with blisters and swollen feet running a half marathon if I wore the sneakers I wear to work or just running around in. I had my feet measured and did all this treadmill stuff from a running store to find the best shoe for me. The staff brought out several pairs for me to try and I knew instantly they weren't going to work...until I tried on the last pair. I paid a buck fifty for them and they are worth every single penny! No sores or blisters or anything. In fact, my feet are about the only part of my body that didn't hurt after I finished the marathon this year during the Goofy challenge.
Even if you have had your feet measured and gone through this trial to test shoes, you might have just ended up with the wrong pair.
Like I wrote, for me, I know INSTANTLY if the shoe is going to work or not. Once I put my foot into it, if I don't LOVE it right away then it isn't going to work for me. I must have tried on dozens of shoes overall ... until I came to ones I have now.
Plus, your feet change. So what may have worked for you one year may not work for you another.
I would seriously spend time and money looking and investing into a proper shoe store (not those giant sporting goods stores)...and get checked out. Really.

I ran NYC last weekend (after running Hartford in October). I took two days off completely, ran 6 on Wednesday, took Thursday off, and then ran 7, 17 and 8 to close out the week. Funny how a low mileage week of 38 can feel like so much when you've been tapering nonstop for five weeks!

Quotes like these at one end of the spectrum serve as a reminder that there are a wide range of runners and abilities on these boards. For those at the other end of the spectrum don't panic, if this is your first marathon experience it will be amazing and one you'll never forget, and if 38 miles is in fact a high mileage week for you, you're not way behind. :thumbsup2 You'll all get there!

Well said! We will all get there :yay:

I did a marathon this weekend and noticed that my pace really fell off about mile 18. I think I need to increase my pace a little bit in my long runs. How much of an impact do you all think the prior 3 days are going to have on your marathon race pace? Are you all going to fuel more frequently during the half to try and reduce impact on the full? Will we need to fuel more frequently during the full because of the prior days running? I've done the goofy twice before, but I am more nervous this year.

What was your longest LSD training run(s) before your marathon? We're all very different in our training approaches/methods. I have found my training pace has nothing to do with my race day "bonk" point but rather the distance I covered pre-race. I have to run at least 2-20 milers and a 23 to keep my pace/endurance going race day. Keep in mind I run my LSD 2 min/mile slower than race pace. GL in your training.
