**** Official 2014 AUGUST - Disneyland thread ****

Question of the week.....
:drive::moped::car::beach::drive::moped::car:
Are you planning any other excursions this summer??? Or is it just this one big lovely Disney trip?
Feel free to share any other plans you might have.

DLR will be our third vacation this year, and it's our big one of the summer. We have our fourth trip planned over Christmas (to a cabin in the Sierras), but most this year have been/will be driving because next year is a lot of flying vacations. We are going to Cape Canaveral to visit my in laws in January, so we will close out with 4 days at WDW for our DD2's third birthday, and I have been planning that already at WDW trips are more effort to plan than DLR.

If you'd like to confirm the dates of these with you I can put it into the list on the first page. If not - that's ok, no reply necessary :D

Definitely! Thanks!

Monday August 11 - Steakhouse 55
Tuesday August 12 - BBB
Saturday August 16 - Storytellers for DD4's 5th birthday! :cheer2:
Sunday August 17 - Surf's Up

Our trip will be our major trip, we have a minor trip to Tucson, sort of a stay-cation as we call it in AZ...I cant wait 2 months for DLR though!

We don't have any other plans for 'summer' (it's winter for me, so the count down is on!). However, we do have flights booked to Bangkok at the start of November

Ooohh! That sounds exciting!!!

Oh, I totally get you about not wishing our summer away! (We had snow up here in Northern Ontario into May and quite a fews nights with temps down to 1oC or so in early June. Summer's really only been here for a week or two ... Hopefully it'll stick aroud into September ... October would be pushing it!)

Just gonna keep telling myself that it's worth the wait and enjoy the good weather here while it lasts! :)

Ya, we had SUCH a cooooollldd winter!!! And we have had some oddly hot days scattered in May and the snow was gone earlier this year but it's been very rainy this spring so I'm VERY eager for that sun and heat to show up already. We start getting a chill again end of August :( and September can be hit and miss. We do photography (a side business of DH's) and everyone wants fall coloured leaves in their photos but even in September when the leaves are changing it can be ruined by a snowfall :( So, yep - we need to enjoy EVERY LAST DROP of summer that we can. Normally we do vacations when it's cold but with DD in highschool we are trying to stick to summer vacations for a few years anyway.

Nope, just this one. Working two jobs with no benefits means I have to request time off, and I don't get paid during the time that I miss, so I have to make sure I don't take too much time off or else I can't pay the bills. This is a trip to visit family and Disneyland, and it's a once-a-year kind of thing. Otherwise, it's hard to go anywhere when you're working 6-7 days a week and running on other people's schedules!

Well, i hope you get some time to enjoy and relax on all your weekends at least! Sending lots of good weather and relaxing day off vibes your way! lol

we are going camping in Maine for 2 long weekends in july. We normally would rent a cabin for one but are tenting to save money for DL.

Wakica-I think I read every Southern Cali post here to plan and reviews of bus tours on trip adviser. We really want to see the Hollywood sign and walk of fame and don't want to have to rush to get back to the bus so the car was a better plan. I need to remember DL is different than WDW. I love being in the wdw bubble and not having to drive at all but we def want to see the coast and LA.

My son is excited to swim in the Atlantic and pacific oceans in the same week.
2 weeks of camping sounds lovely! although I can only handle tenting for 2 nights at a time so good luck with that. LOL.
We are just using our vehicle as well. which is a necesity though to go to Yosemite, Bodi, Lodi, Napa, San Francisco, down the coast and to Huntington Beach!!!! The only things we are really interested in for LA though is the sign, and we heard there is a consignment shop there that a lot of the rich people use so you can get like $200.00 jeans there (in GREAT condition) for $20.00 so my daughter and I are eager to hit that spot! haha. Maybe the names on the sidewalk but meh, we'll see.

This is our big trip of the summer. We tend to be a one big trip a year family (usually Disney related) with a few long weekend shopping trips in Southern Ontario (Barrie/Toronto) thrown into the mix!

We only get to do 1 big trip every year and a half to two years! It used to be only once every 5 years so I'm quite happy with this arrangement. Then we do small trips in between like visit a friend in Calgary or visit Banff or Canmore for a few nights. My mom has a cabin too though which we can always visit in the summer but our beaches are pretty bleh!!! The water goes to pea green soup at her beach for most of August so often we just visit another beach for a day trip in that month.

Disneyland will be our one big trip. Between jobs and volunteer work we are lucky to be able to take this trip so we are going to make it count!!

Disney is definitely a worthwhile one big trip :D

This is pretty much the only big trip left for this year. Did a relay race from Miami to the Florida Keys in February, so got the other big trip out of the way early this year.

Florida and California in one year! I'm jealous!!! lol

Disneyland and Vegas this August is our big summer trip. We have a trip planned to Florida in October to see Diagon Alley and attend Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. I love a year when can go to both DL and WDW, but it does not happen very often!

:cheer2:

ooooh, 2 Disney trips in one year! I'm SO jealous!!!! totally jealous of Diagon alley too!! DD and I are eager to plan another trip to Florida so we can see Diagon Alley, the new FantasyLand additions to MK, AND at the rate we are going it may end up being Avatar Land as well!! She has 2 years left of highschool so we are looking at 2016 in the fall before we get back there  I wonder what the Avatar timeline is looking like.

How odd, I just got off the phone with Disney Dining and the CM I dealt with was...well, not rude or unhelpful but just not all that friendly.

As for other plans this summer, we leave in 10 days for Toronto and the Ottawa! Our son's birthday is during this time so we are going to head to Canada's Wonderland. We have City Passes for Toronto so we are also going to hit CN Tower, Toronto Zoo, Ontario Science Centre and maybe the Royal Ontario Museum if we have time.

After that, I am heading to Ottawa to spend a few days with my sister and go to Bluesfest before DH and DS join me there for 5 days before coming home.

Between Ontario, Disneyland and the 3 weeks of summer camp DS is going to, it is going to be a busy summer!

wow, ya - BUSY!! But so much fun by the sounds of it!! Lucky you :) I would LOVE to hit up Canada wonderland. Not sure why we havn't yet. Oh wait - because we USUALLY book our trips in colder months to get away to the warmth. LOL. Maybe we need to put that on our docket for our next trip! That and the Dells would be a fantastic trip!!

It's a safe area. I have never felt unsafe, but the city, in general, is safe, especially in touristy areas. I have developed into quite the city girl, though, so if things like homelessness or being able to tell someone is using a particular type of recreational drug bother you or make you feel uncomfortable, then you might not feel the same.

No need for playgrounds for us as dd is 16 and going into grade 11. haha. but thanks for the reccomendation of the shows and the food locations. It's ALWAYS helpful to have food suggestions when going somewhere new! Oh and good to know about cheap souvies in Chinatowns :thumbsup2 I LOVE cheap. haha!

4 trips!!! Can i be a part of your familys???:rotfl:
oh and have you been to WDW before?? Good luck trying to do all you want in 4 days! Unless you've been before and know exactly what you are wanting to do which is maybe the case. Whatever you chose though it will ALL be amazing!

Hah! You definitely don't need the playground recs. I stand by the Musee Mecanique recommendation though, as it's popular in general and so fascinating.

If your DD likes shopping, don't miss Union Square. The Sephora there is drool worthy. I do NOT recommend going on a Saturday to this area, if you can help it.

Lol. My DH and I love to travel, and we put a lot of emphasis in our family (and resources) towards this. We are almost never home on the weekends because we are always day-tripping somewhere in the Bay Area. Our girls are just getting old enough now to start to really love travel as well, so we are really gearing up. Our first family international trip is scheduled for April 2015: Guatemala! I so much want our children to look back at their childhoods and appreciate the adventures we had together.

We have been to WDW lots of times, and you are definitely right! Can't do it all in 4 days! My inlaws vacation in Florida every winter, so our trip is because of them and has to be split appropriately. I would love to spend a full week at WDW, but then we wouldn't see them more than one day, and that's not the point of the visit. So, we take 3-4 day trips to WDW. The plus is that this happens every year, so we always know we will be back.

We are definitely hitting the shops in Union Square. Sephora is make up isn't it? she hates make up. LOL. But I dont :goodvibes

Well, you are experienced in WDW so you know exactly what you want to hit and what you can pass up this time. Good to know!

My dd just did a missions trip with her school to Guatemala over Easter! She LOVED it there and will be going again over Easter 2015 and 2016. You'll love it. I feel like right now all our savings is going to help her see the world while DH and I sit at home earning the money. LOL. DH and I did go to Punta Cana Dominican Replublic without her in 2013 though. just a quick cheap get away but at least something.

Wakica, much to my dismay I'll have to get you to take me off the "unknown dates" list... a trip in August just isn't going to happen this year, too many other things going on :( I still have our December 2014 trip to look forward to though!

Hope you all have fun this summer, late August was one of my favorite times to go!

awe! :sad1: I'm so sorry to hear you aren't able to make your August trip work. I am happy to hear that you still have a trip planned though! You will have to make the most of the one trip.

Question of the week.....
:drive::moped::car::beach::drive::moped::car:
Are you planning any other excursions this summer??? Or is it just this one big lovely Disney trip?
Feel free to share any other plans you might have.

For us this is our one big trip for the year. We usually do a big trip every 1.5 to 2 years. Our last trip was for DH and I in dominican republic for a week to celebrate our 20th anniversary and that was Feb 2013, so a year and a half ago.
DD got 2 big trips this year cuz she did a missions trip with her school to Guatemala.
Other than that we will head out to my moms cabin a few times this summer. DD got a SUP board for her 16th birthday (cheaper than a car lol) so she is VERY eager to get some SUP time in this summer.

We generally travel a lot during the summer with several small trips to visit friends and family and then we do Disneyland off season. But with one kid on year round school and one not, we aren't doing much this summer except Disneyland. We have ticket vouchers to the Shakespeare Festival and Tuachan's Broadway in the Desert Series in Southern Utah, but we haven't decided when we are going to use them yet and might save them for a fall trip when it isn't so hot down there.

We are also trying to save our pennies for a big trip in 2015 for our 20th anniversary. Right now we have Alaska booked for next June on DCL, but school schedules just aren't cooperating so we might have to change that to something else.

Sad news. Trip plans cancelled. Daughter needs hip surgery, and we've been referred to Stanford for consultation. No idea of what out of pocket costs will be, and extended walking is painful for daughter. Disappointed, but we need to address this issue first. Booooo.

That stinks but priorities are priorities. Hope everything turns out ok for your daughter.

Oh no, that's too bad! I hope the surgery helps your daughter and that you can reschedule the trip later!

This trip is my "big" one for the year and, if I didn't have nationals to go to, I'd have to skip this year. I was thrilled when they announced the location for this year. Disneyland is a special treat. I love going back to where the magic started.:wizard:

I am going to a sci-fi/anime convention in July, but that's more of a stay-cation since it's in town. There might be a Disneyworld trip or 2 in the next few months as I'm only 3 hours away.

Sorry I'm a little late on the question of the week. I spent the weekend in and out of the emergency room and ended up having a kidney stone removed on Sunday night/Monday morning. Starting to feel better but still taking it easy. Luckily it won't throw off our Disney trip!

As for other summer plans, we have this big trip plus we're planning to visit DH's sister and family in Summerland, BC (which is as lovely as the name suggests!) We might call that trip off though because we were planning to go in about 3 weeks, which is when I have to get a stint removed from my kidney/bladder. After that my online class starts up and the kids have daycamps to go to. DH might take the kids camping this weekend with Grandpa as long as the weather cooperates.

August can be hit or miss here too. I'm a high school teacher, so winter vacations don't happen usually (though we did sneak in a WDW DVC trip over New Year's one year and another over Canadian Thanksgiving last October). Looking forward to the lack of humidity in DL as compared to WDW in August!

just make our first dining reservation of the trip :cool1:

sunday aug 24 at Wine Country Trattoria

we tried WCT for the first time for my mother's day dinner during our may trip b/c of the refub of POTC we didn't want to eat at BB and it was FAB......:goodvibes

its my new fav for a nice sit down meal so for this trip I thought I would stick with tradition and do another sunday night dinner there!! lol

So sorry to hear your trip won't work out :( Your daughter will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the recovery is quick and you can start planning that Disney vacation once she's doing better.

gotta love it when you "have" to go to something that just happens to be in a GREAT location for a holiday too!!
The sci-fi anime conventions sounds fun!!! We JUST missed out on our first ever comicon thing in our city but won't miss it again!!! Are you wearing something special for it?? Do share! and boy am I jealous that your only 3 hours from WDW!!!! We'd be there every few months if that were the case. LOL

I'm glad your feeling better! That must have been a HORRIBLE weekend!! :worried: Sounds like your summer is BUSY!!!

New Years?!?! :scared1: How was that for you? lol. I cringe at the thought of being there over such busy periods but I guess if you prepare mentally going in it would be SUCH a wonderful place to celebrate! When we went in off season it was typically end of October/early Nov but mostly end of April/early May cuz lets face it - spring can suck here too. haha.

just make our first dining reservation of the trip :cool1:

YAY for you!!! i will add it to the list :) I still can't decide what places to book. We might just end up doing all counter service at this rate. lol

Does anyone know how easy it is to cancel a dinning reservation online? We want to do Goofy's Kitchen for dinner on Sunday Aug 24th, which I can reserve today. But we also want to do the Fantasmic Dessert seating during our trip, which we want to do on Monday but we don't know if Fantasmic will be showing on that Monday or not. So, we may end up doing Fantasmic dessert on Sunday instead. Not sure if I should make the reservation for Goofy's and then cancel/move it, or just wait a couple weeks for the schedule to show Fantasmic.
