Official 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Thread

What's your plan from Mon to Sat that week? I know it's still ways away, but I'm trying to figure it out so I have a plan. I'm in WDW until Wed morning, so I'll be walking Sun-Tues to get my legs going. Was toying w/ a 3 miler or so Tues morning and maybe 6(?) on Thurs morning. I'm bringing my foam roller and yoga mat down there so I can strect each morning/night pre/post park, but not really sure about running that week. Should I try to schedule a massage or would that be too close to Tink?

I've never done this before, but my preliminary thoughts are this.

Mon: post race massage; walk MK and Hollywood studios.
Tue: fly back to CA
W: jog 3 miles if able; possible 2nd massage
Th: run 3-5 miles
Fri: run 3 miles
Sa: hang out and rest or jog 2 miles

I will be running with my wife, so my pace will be about half(double) what I normally run. This is good and bad. I think it will be tough to be out there for 2.5 hours and not in my normal stride. I'm just hoping to keep loose on the days between the races. Mileage at that point really shouldn't matter at all, it's all about keeping the muscles as loose as possible. That is why I will probably do multiple 3-mile runs. Lots of icing if my joints hurt. I will also probably try to wear compression clothing from Sunday through at least Wednesday.

Massage: I would normally not get a massage within one week of racing (I don't get them that often anyway), but given that my biggest issue will likely be muscle fatigue/repair and lactic acid build up from the Goofy races, I think a massage early in the week will help me get through the Tink.

My thoughts on the massage part FWIW...I always get a massage on the thursday evening prior to a sunday morning race...but I make sure they know that I have a race in a few days and not to go too deep or too firm so I'm not really sore afterwards...I normally will get another ASAP when I get back home from the race/trip. Last year when I did the DL half, my BF set up in-room massages at our hotel for that same afternoon from an outside company in the area...the person I was with was a sports masseuse and it was glorious! It was part of a b-day gift, so I couldn't tell you how much something like that runs, but it felt amazing!

Thanks guys, that helps a lot. My worry is keeping the muscles loose too. Good idea on the compression gear throughout the week. Maybe I'll pick up an extra pair of socks when I get some this weekend. Don't really care about time in Tink that much, more of just being able to finish. What do you think about using protein powder after Goofy and through Tues or so to help the muscle repair? Think that would be too much?

As for a massage in WDW, I know there's a spa at the GF, but thought I read somewhere that's closed until next year (not 100% on that one though). If you're staying on-site, is there another resort that offers massages?

I think getting a normal amount of protein is good. Powder is fine, I'll probably have chicken or fish that week.

Thanks for the heads up on the spa. I'll check into that. I wanted to get a massage before the flight, but maybe I'll just have to roll.

Right spa at GF is closed due to construction. There is a full spa at Saratoga Springs. I have has massage at AKL too but it is not a full 'day spa'...was 6 or 7 years ago so that very well could have changed by now. I thought I had read CoronadoSprings had the same type of set up bit not really sure...something to check into though.

I'm planning on wearing compression after Donald and after Mickey, and on the plane home on Monday. Hopefully a shake out 3 miles on Wednesday, and then I think that might be it. If I can squeeze in a couple miles on Friday, that would be awesome, but I'm not going to count on it...lol

Just FYI in case some of you aren't looking at the DL forum:
Costco in various states are selling 4-day PHs for $259.99 includes a $50 Costco cash card. I purchased mine today at the Smokey Point (Arlington), WA store. Limit 5 and must be activated by Feb 2013 (28th I think).

I am thinking about joining you in Ca. for the Tink!:cool1: From the GET Travel site it looks like I can still register, but no registration fee is listed. Anyone know what the registration fee is at this point? Unfortunately GET is closed for the weekend...

POST SCRIPT
Looked on the GET site again...$250 for race and a one day park ticket. Doesn't seem bad.

I did it! I am now signed up for both the Tink and the Princess halves..... :cool1: I have booked my air, hotels and ground transportation.

Now I need to work on a training plan. For those planning to do the Princess, what is your maintenance plan for the weeks inbetween the two races? Is there a Galloway plan for this!

I think I'll try to read all of the posts on here over the weekend....has anyone posted a picture of the medal?

Yay! :cool1: I'm doing both too. I had a similar situation last year when I ran DL half and then the W&D half about a month later, and if I can remember correctly my weekday runs stayed low, 3 & 4 miles and I think for long runs I ran 7 miles a couple of times, I think a 6 miler and then did a short taper the week before the race. I will say too that my plans for a half never go up to race distance...10 or 11 miles at the most, and I planned to run the W&D last year as more of a fun run to take pics and stuff and wasn't worried about time, so my maintenance plan in between the two races wasn't very aggressive. I plan to do the same with these two races. I'll take Tink a little more seriously and try to do my best, and then Princess will be purely for fun with lots of picture stops. As a side note, who says stuff like that, right??? I'll run a half marathon "purely for fun." :lmao:

The Tink medal should look the same as last year's, only minus the "inagural" part. It's a beautiful medal...my favorite of all the Disney ones I have so far for sure!

So it looks like I am actually running Tink next year. After finding out the WDW half was full when we tried to switch we made alternative plans. So I'm running Tink for charity again.

Had incredible luck though. I was talking to my Mom who is over near Disneyland right now because of a convention (lucky!) and decided to check and see if any rooms were available at the hotels knowing full luck was against me. Well there was a room available! So we're getting to stay at the Disneyland hotel!

I have some food questions for those who know the area. I will be staying at BW Stovall's Inn. I am not really into fancy meals and like to eat light/healthy. Breakfast is included with my stay and I will have a fridge and microwave in my room. I won't have a car. Is there a grocery store nearby? I am happy to hear about the opening of an Earl of Sandwich at DTD; are there other places onsite/nearby with a good selection of healthy choices?

Thanks! :goodvibes

ESPN Zone, right across from where Earl is going in, has good selections. Their salads are really big. I love their grilled chicken sandwich, you can usually make that 2 sandwiches, b/c they use a whole breast piece. UVA/Catal changed their menu, I know they have some healthy things, just haven't tried it yet. Also, there's La Brea Bakery at the end of DTD by the secuirty entrance to the parks. Next door to Stovall's is Coco's, but as for healthy... :goodvibes There are some good places in the parks too.

For stores, on the corner of Katella and Harbor (a block south of you), is a 7-11. They have a good selection for being a 7-11 ~ kinda like a mini-mart. And next door to them on the Harbor side is a liquor store that has some things also. There's a Target on Harbor, but it's a little further than the 7-11 and w/o a car it might be easier for you w/ 7-11.

Vichi ~ did you have fun down in DL?

We just got back from DL and we stayed at Stovall's so I hope I can help...Not sure about a grocery store location without a car but there is a Coco's that delievers room service to Stovall's guests. And for a Coco's it's ok food for a coffee shop and they bring it to your room which is nice. We are always trying to find light/healthy places and find the DL area a little hard to do that. If you want pasta the night before the race....Marri's Pizza and Pasta which is RIGHT down the street one block away (2 min by car so VERY walkable) We actually ate there twice this trip and great pasta, salads. It's in a little strip mall so don't let the location fool you, we have never had a bad meal there and the staff is very accomodating to special requests.

We're staying at Stovall's too for Tink. It's a perfect location and short walk to the start of the race.

I hope this helps a little. I am also looking forward to the opening of the Earl of Sandwich. I can't wait to try it when we visit at Christmas time.

Kim,

YES !!!! The party was fun and we really enjoyed how the Villians were brought to their meet and greet in Town Square in the horse drawn carriage with the fog and "thunder" ? I hope you had a chance to see that. Crowds were heavier than I thought they would be even during the week. I guess there is never a slow time to go now. We'll be back down in about 4 1/2 wks for Christmas time. Can't wait to see Cars Land dressed up for Christmas.

When is your next trip ??

Have you gone to Marri's for pasta yet ???? You've got to try it before Tink :)

No!!! I missed the carriage! :headache: I would have loved to see that, but I did see them/got pics of them all on the mid level concourse of the train station. When are you going in Dec? I'm trying for a short weekend 8th/9th so long as no weather going over the Grapevine so I can take pics and do the Holiday Tour which sounds like fun. The whole fam is also going down the 20th-22nd. My sister and her BF are flying in and he's never been to CA before so that'll be fun. And she hasn't seen CL yet, can't wait for her to see the finished look. I can't wait to see BV St all done up w/ the period look, but I also love the early LA period so that helps! :goodvibes

Haven't tried Marri's yet, but I have their site bookmarked for the fam trip, b/c I know DL is going to be a zoo then.

We're going Nov 29-Dec 3rd for Candlelight. We go every year for that and didn't try to sch. another weekend since nobody knows how the 20 days of Candlelight is going to really work this year. We'll just stand in the "cheap" seats. I also can't wait for BV Street Decorations !!!!
I'm with you on the weather over the Grapevine. I think wev'e gone through everything...wind,fire, fog, snow, rain storms, flooding it can be SO stressful !!!! I still get stress that closures will happen while we've got to get down there for Tink.

It sounds like you have a fun family trip planned. Your right DL will be a zoo then and Marri's will be a great choice to have a family dinner with good food.

I will start by saying I posted this also in the check in thread... Not sure of the difference.

New to this thread also... I may have posted once long time ago.
Got my husband signed up as well although he is running for a charity since it was sold out. We picked a good one TAPS (helps families of those who have lost a solider in combat) now just to raise the money.

I had to have surgery on a cyst in a odd area so I cant start training till mid November aghh. But I was running before hand and I can still walk so I walk like 6-8 miles a day.

I will be in the last corral no big deal and I have accepted my fate. My goal is to run it in 3 hours thats between 13-14 min miles. I am power walking 15 min miles now and brisk walking 17 min miles. The last time I ran I did 3.7 miles in 40 mins so I am hoping when I can train again I will be good to go. I am also hoping to lose 28 pounds by the race.

We are staying at Grand Cali again we were just there for a wedding but sad we didnt get to go to the Halloween Party. Love the hotel!!!!

We will be also running the Princess 1/2 marathon in Feb. CANT WAIT!!!

Welcome !!!!! I'm also running the Princess to get my Coast to Coast.

How is the Candlelight? Is it worth it to watch? I was talking to my dad about a week ago about the trip and he asked me why I was going 8/9 when we'd all be going in 2 weeks and I just laughed. I told him I wanted to get pics and be able to actually be able to walk around the park and be able to get on some rides. :rotfl2: I really excited for my sister to see the changes in the parks and her bf to see the parks for the 1st time, but if we get on 15 rides total in the 2 days, honestly, I'll be happy.

I will start by saying I posted this also in the check in thread... Not sure of the difference.

:wave2: Hi! The only difference b/w the 2 is that one is in the DL part of the threads and this 1 is in the WISH Community/Healthy section. Some people pop back and forth b/w the 2 and others post in 1 or the other. The DL thread also helps nonrunners who are planning trips that weekend and on that side know that there are the races going on so they don't go in blindsided when they see 13,000 women and a few good men running early in the morning on Sunday! :goodvibes
