Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

So yesterday I was supposed to do an 8 mile run. I have been battling ankle and hip pain on my longer runs and was worried I wouldn't make it all 8 miles. Wouldn't you know it, but I felt so good I ran 10 miles. My first double digit run! I had been psyching myself out about the race; thinking I wasn't going to be able to do it and now I know I can! I'm still a bit nervous though but I know I can do it.

GETTING NERVOUS!. Hi ladies! I am not nervous about the distance but more about the distance when I have no sleep in my system. Nervous that it is going to be tough because of the early morning. How have you veterans handled this?
It's the night before the night before that really counts. Get a good night of sleep on Friday night and you should be fine on Sunday. That being said, don't fret if you don't sleep well on friday either. When I did Dopey over marathon weekend a few weeks ago I was nervous that waking up early for races 3 days in a row would kill me during the marathon but adrenaline does wonders!

Sorry everyone too lazy to search all the pages.... Where is everyone getting their compression socks and was there a code? Again sorry to keep bringing this up!

Hope you all are well!

Michele
Are you signed up for the active shwaggle deals? I didn't see the last deal that everyone ordered from but I've ordered compression socks at 50% off from codes that active emails out.

Awesome job! I love those runs where I feel like running longer. Usually it happens to me on my short runs, so great job with the 10!

OK can I ask a really dumb question? What are compression socks? What do they do? What are they for? I keep reading about you all using them, and I just don't understand them I guess :confused3

Great job! You will definitely be able to run the half. Race day atmosphere is fantastic, with lots of comraderie amongst the women runners.
Happy Running!

There are no dumb questions in here! Unless you count the ones that you wish you asked but never did... anyways...

Compression socks are socks that fit tighter around your lower leg. They help your circulation and return blood to your heart. They help lots of people in recovery or during the race themselves. I've heard that they work wonders for people with shin splints.

I personally use compression sleeves (think really snug leg warmers) so I can wear whatever socks I want to, and I only use them post race for recovery. Some people wear them during the race as well.

Like a PP said, they are like really tight knee high socks. I wear them a lot, especially pre race when I'm walking around parks, during the race, and after the race to help with recovery. I've even been known to sleep in mine after full marathons. They work wonders on my calves and I don't have soreness in my legs like I used to. I usually wear the sock version, but I have a pair of calf sleeves that I like as well.

Thanks for the suggestions on the socks! I ended up getting one of them on, so I'm halfway there! I love how they feel on my feet!

Yesterday I did a short 4.75 mile run and my shins felt pretty good, and last night I bought new running shoes. I got Asics GT-2170s. Today I ran in them. Have to say, I love them . I also wore my compression sleeves. I went 11.11 miles with NO shin pain at all!!! :cool1::banana: I am so excited. The only complaint I have is tha I started getting a bit of a blister on the inside of my one big toe. :confused3. Hopefully the skin will just toughen up and all will be good. I did get the bandaid bister things. But NO shin pain. I've always had shin pain at some point on some level. And 11 miles is my longest distance yet. I felt pretty good and probably would have pushed it to 12 , but I had to pick up DS from preschool. Actually I finished my run there.

Colleen, that is great news, isn't getting back to pain free runs awesome?

I was put into Asics GT-2160's I am loving them too.

great job getting in over 11 pain-free to boot!

i wear the asics 2170s, too. the whole series is a great shoe, and i think the 2170 update was a good one. one thing i noticed in them was they added a a bit of extra cushioning, so if you are an over-pronator like me, you might wear through them a bit quicker than if you were wearing the old 2160s. i got mine over thanksgiving and have already put 220 miles on them (gee time flies!) and they are starting to get that heavy worn-out shoe feel around my ankle. i was able to get around 250-300 miles out of the 2160s. of course it's all very personal based on your stride, but just wanted to throw it out there for you!

I just had the WORST dream. I dreamt my whole family was running and i was up ahead of them. I sat for a minute to rest but ZONKED OUT and no one could get me up so we were disqualified!!! I'm going to be a nervous wreck the night before this race, I'm already starting to stress it. This is not a good sign....:sad2:

I am nervous about sleep too. DH is running the 5K, so I will be up early that morning too.

The shoe talk got me thinking, I am due for new shoes soon. I was going to just order my sme Acis again (I didn't like the new update ones I got last year and just ordered the old ones) but Amazon is out of them, and I don't know if I have time to get to the running store soon. It is making me nervous not to get enough miles on a new pair before the Princess.

Getting so close ladies! I can not believe it.

So I do have a slight horror story about waking up. Luckily, it has a happy ending.

Last year at the Princess 1/2, my alarm clock, which happened to be my iphone, didn't go off. Luckily, I have one of those handy internal alarm clocks and woke myself up. When I checked the time I was behind and I immediately jumped out of bed and luckily didn't miss the bus and got to the race. It definitely got my heart racing and woke me up!

And of course the happy ending to the story... I finished, got my medal, and ended up inspiring my good friend who was with me to do this year's princess!

Did you try Runningwarehouse? They have a WISH discount code (Wishraced) I think- 15% off and free shipping- they are fast too!

Sleep- I am usually ok with sleeping before a race. Last year I think I went to be around 8 or 9 (old and pregnant- it was easy to do! lol) and was up by 2:45 and out to the bus by 3:15. My little sister was a little harder to get going though! She would probably do better to just stay up all night, run, and then come back and sleep. She's one of *those* people. I am a morning person all the way, so up and moving isn't too hard. Try to talk to me after 10pm though, and not sure I make a lot of sense!

Definitely great news Colleen!

I'm in 2150s and love them! I have a bunch of back-pairs so haven't had to upgrade yet. I just changed shoes in Dec and have another pair in storage behind them.

Putting on my runlove compression socks this AM after a 3.6 mi just to see how they feel. My concern is that they are not tight at all???? By no means am I rolling them on. They pull on very easily. They are cute, but, come only in one size. I am thinking I need a pair that comes in sizes (I have skinny calves with little muscle, but, they are getting more muscular :) ) Does anyone have recommendations for smaller sized compressionn socks? Looking at the Zensah ones everyone is talking about. Looks like they are sized. Any others you can recommend in a smaller size?

I had a dream about the race last night... except that parts of it were through different hallways of the hotels. I was running it with some friends from back home (only one of them is actually my partner in crime for this race), and I was taking some certain route or path or something and clearly remember calling out "It's ok! All my Disboard friends told me that this was the right one!"

So even in my dreams you guys are with me. :grouphug:

You are too funny!

So I know a few people have mentioned that they were going to be tapering down after the 11 mile a couple of Saturdays ago. If that is the case what would you be running this weekend? Galloway calls for 12.5 but I was wondering what everyone is panning to run this weekend. Thanks!
