Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

All last night I kept saying out loud to myself that who could anyone vote for Fantasia? All 3 of her songs were horrible and I am so sick of hearing her sing.

Funny, I kept thinking the SAME THING about Diana.. and I live in Snellville Land!

Diana has a good voice that needs maturing. Fantasia has an unusual voice that is not everyone's cup of tea but it is mature and on key, especially for a 19 year old.

Yes, she does bring to mind Aretha, Macy and Mary, just like Clay brought to mind Barry Manilow. It still allows them uniqueness.

As much as I like Diana. I do believe that Fantasia fans will come through. To me, its obvious who the next AI is going to be. Im just hoping that people go against the judges and give diana the vote. I also agree that the performances last night were definately not "Finals" performances...I was a little disappointed. Oh well, we'll have to see what happens tonight!

I've never been reminded of Barry Manilow when I hear Clay sing. Clay can sing! Barry is more of a song writer and sounds NOTHING like Clay!!! I don't get why people compare the two of them unless it based on looks.

Fantasia on the other hand is a Macy Gray wanna be...not very unique. The yeah yeah's got to go!

IMHO:teeth:

The judges went out of their way to find anything wrong with Diana while overpraising Fantasia.

That usually works against them.

If Fantasia doesn't get the votes she deserves to win - I seriously think it'll only be because she is a 19 year old mother. And people are very judgemental. By contrast, Diana has this squeaky clean prom queen facade that I think people are buying into without realizing she is NOT the better singer of the two.

I don't see why people say Fantasia has an attitude. To me she just seems like a really tough woman. A survivor. Someone who probably had to grow up too fast, too soon and who is still looking for herself. And if that makes her a Diva - so be it!!! She can outsing Diana any day of the week!!!

Don't get me wrong - I think Diana can sing. But I agree with Simon - she puts on more a of a high-school musical type performance everytime she's on stage. She's very "beauty pageant". She has come a long way and I'm sure she'll have a good future, but Fantasia is clearly (in my book) the winner here.

The TV guide poll has Fantasia at 51% and Diana at 49%. Wow, that is very close.

Voted for Diana, can't stand Fantasia. . .

What cracks me up is the judges' are interviewed and they repeatedly say how Fantasia is "unique", "different", "no one sounds like her". . .then in the next breath they compare her voice to Mary J. Blige, Macy Gray, and Aretha. Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you "sound like" someone else, that does not make you "unique".

The judges have been contradicting themselves all season long. I think they're at a loss of what to say or do about the lack of AI quality competing. Clay and Rueben could just stand there and capture an audience with their voices alone. It seems that these two ladies have to use other parts of their bodies to deliver the goods. Too much jiggying around with Fantasia, especially on her rendition of the AI single.

Both of these young ladies have been strong by comparison. Both, at this point anyway, deserve to win. Of course, only one will win. At this point its simply who gets the most votes. In my opinion they are both winners.

My critique on last night's performances

Diana - 1st song GREAT; 2nd song GREAT; 3RD song NOT SO GOOD

Fantasia - 1st song not so good; 2nd song GREAT; 3rd song would have been great if I weren't watching her.

I predict Diana will win the title and have a great career; and Fantasia will be picked up by a major recording studio and have an great career as well. Both will win.

Heard on the radio yesterday that Simon thinks that Diana will win even though he likes Fantasia better. Of course, this was before last night's performance.

Diana started off good but seemed to get worse while Fantasia did the opposite and ended with a bang.

I agree with a previous poster and said the same thing while listening to Fantasia sing her last song. It seemed to be written for her. To be fair to Tamyra, I'm sure that it wasn't (she may have written it months ago) but with Fantasia's gospel singing background, it was a better fit.

Personally, my favorite song is the one written for the first AI that Kelly sang.

I don't know who will win. It might be in Fantasia's best interest to not win. That way she won't be committed to one contract and can have the pick of the litter.

On the news last night, they showed Randy saying that if Diana didn't win, she could come to him and he would sign her up. At least that's what I thought he said. Maybe he meant either one.

Clay sounds NOTHING like Barry Manilow - it's the look and his mannerisms that are similar. The mannerisms are sometimes SCARILY similar. :)

Have to admit, Clay has the better voice, but Barry is the better performer. Push came to shove, I'd still pick Barry over Clay in a minute, but Clay runs a not-too-distant second. :)

Last night, the whole "you NAILED it" bit got to me. I hope Diana wins this - just because the producers and judges want Fantasia so badly.

2nd ain't so bad - just ask Clay! :teeth:

Speaking of Diana and sound problems, did you hear her at the end when one of the last judges (don't remember if it was Paula or Simon) said something about being so off in the middle and she said something to the effect that she could not hear.?? She said it when the crowd was making a lot of noise..

That was driving me nuts too, I kept saying "why is she dancing like a chicken?".

I was referring to the post that remarked how can they call her unique and compare her to the aformentioned singers. I don't compare her to them, but Randy did.

As for the comparison to Barry, Barry himself made that comparison! Not my comparisons, just ones I've heard.

I don't hear Macy Gray when I hear Fantasia sing. I think they are both different. I don't like Macy's way of singing at all but I love Fantasia's.

Yes, I heard Barry say that when he was a judge and I didn't see it then either.

I don't see any comparision.

Wow, I've been watching AI since the beginning, and I missed this whole thred? How? :)

Anyway, I'll say that Fantasia really should win this. Last night's show made it clear to me that while Diana is good, Fantasia is on another level IMO. But, like others have saild, no matter who wins, both will probably get a career anyway. :)

Fantasia dancing like a chicken?? :rotfl:
What I really like about Fantasia is the way she throws herself into her perfomaces. That's called passion!!! She completely immersed herself in that song last night, and like it or not - you can't say she wasn't feeling that song!!!

All that aside, even if Diana wins - I think she will disappear pretty fast. And, like Clay, Fantasia will be favored.

I heard on the radio this morning that Missy Eliott wants to work with Fantasia, and that after meeting her last week - Clive is going to set that up! So if that's true - Fantasia has already won!!!

Yes she said, "It's hard to hear up here" after Randy's comment.

According to Diana's mom, they changed the modulation of the song to make it different from the rehersal and they made the song longer without telling Diana. (got this from the idolonfox website)

Also according to the Today show, Diana's earpiece was not working during the final song.

Nigel, AI's executive producer, was just saying that the results are unexpected and when a comment was made about the number of votes being over 50,000,000 and that is way more than votes for President, he said something to the effect that America (and Great Britain)generally gets that wrong too. Is he hinting that Diana has won?????????

He also said that the votes weren't as close as last year.
