Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

We had the Christmas Story flashback, too. ("Deck the Hars wif Bows of Horry. . .)

They said only 13 people went through from Houston, out of thousands. Wow.

I can imagine getting punchy (and rude) when the 50th bad singer in a row comes in, in all seriousness, to serenade them. And I think they should realize that this is a singing competition for a Pop Star. Some folks come in with voices better suited for other arenas, and some come in deluded about the true sound of their voices, so they've got to be given a reality check.

But, Simon, "worst" is a superlative -- they can't ALL be the worst!:scared1:

I think we are seeing less of the ones who got through because they will get their face time in Hollywood, and apparently because the ratings rise in proportion to the number of awful singers.

I caught someone singing really well on the Whole New World montage as well. I'm sure she didn't get through because she was very large and very broadway.

I'm tired of bad. It all feels like a setup. The girl that went to the mall was obvious. The glass of water, complete with the police also was. The song choice of the asian guy - how many more l's can be in the first line of a song? I would be very surprised if most of them aren't setups. How about that kid that didn't want to sing because he wouldn't make it and then complained that they wouldn't let him sing - I'm sorry, that's just too weird. If that was real, he shouldn't have been let in the door. They've even tried to raise the bar with the going out to prove Simon wrong business.

I would like to see a different kind of audition process next year. I do have to admit it's entertaining, but last year was more so for me. If I wasn't watching with my kids, I would skip watching the rest of the auditions.

I just wonder.....how many cities will they have to go through to find enough good singers! lol

I agree with you disykat. I'd like to see more of "You've got a good voice. But it's not what we're looking for. Here's how you can improve it."

I like Simon but not all the voices that he calls horrendous or terrible are really that bad. He could tone it down some. What not just tell them "Sorry, but no." But then the ratings wouldn't be as high.

How about the yodeling girl that they all fought over? Will she become the baahing one like last year?

There was a girl from Oklahoma that sounded pretty good. I think that she made it though.

My friend George is going to Hollywood, y'all! He wasn't able to tell us until last night, but he had hinted around it a lot...enough so that our group of friends all watched the show together. Sure enough -- he blew them away!

Which one was George? Was he one that was featured as "you're going to Hollywood!" or one of the 18 or so chosen but not shown on the program. What did he sing? Just curious so we can keep an eye out for him!

Ok, I'm resurrecting this thread from page 10 because I missed it!!!! What did you guys think of the show tonight? Is it just me, or does this look like it's shaping up to be a pretty bad season?!?!! It seems like the producers are letting a lot of bad people through to the judges this year. I know the bad ones get the ratings, but YIKES!!!!!

I think they are showing the bad ones to make for "good tv." At the end of the shows they tell how many have made it thru to Hollywood but we never saw most of them. I thought last night's show was funny. I can't decide who was funnier to watch, the "Ricky Martin She Bangs guy" or "Aint no Mountain High Enough guy." :D

i think it's quite comical that when the two judges are the guys...they choose mostly girls to go through!!! i know that based on what they showed last night, there were actually very few guys who sounded good...

the dog cracked me up!!

that gal...can't remember her name...she was the one that wasn't chosen but kept singing to the camera as she walked out...anyway, i didn't think she was all that great. she had a decent voice, but she used WAY too much vibrato. i guess that's just a pet peeve of mine...it drives me insane when i hear singers who don't know how to use vibrato properly...so they choose to use it on every note they sing. that just drives me absolutely buggy!

there were some good voices that came out of the show last night. i was actually impressed with the football guy. it's not every day that you see a big football player who can actually carry a tune in a bucket! and i was very excited that the guy with the family who came here from asia made it too! he was very good...i thought...

and i thought that the she-bangs guy was so cute...he couldn't sing or dance, but he had such a sweet heart!! i was so happy that they didn't bash him too hard and that he didn't take it personally. he basically said that he tried his best...

looking forward to more bad auditions tonight!

I didn't realize it's on TONIGHT (Wed)??? Cool! I guess that's the Hawaii auditions, right? I thought I had to wait until next week...

All right!

I was glad that they took it easy on him too. Sometimes they can be so harsh! And it's not all Simon.

What about the guy that didn't answer the question the way Simon wanted? What was that all about? I thought that he had a decent enough voice compared to some to some of the others.

this is my question...they show how they have the first audition in the stadium, so how do some of these people actually make it in front of randy, simon, and paula....? we know they're bad , who is letting these people thru the doors? i think they are just there for entertainment purposes, and to tell the truth, its getting old...I'd like to see some real talent for a change. they should just go to disney and listen to some of those voices, now thats some talent! give the real talented people their 15 minutes of fame instead of these idiots!

I think the first audition judges are looking for real contenders and the bottom of the barrell, and some that are in-between get through and never get a second of air time.

Remember the Thunderbird girl (whose voice I really liked, but I'm a sucker for the 50s era sound) who answered that she would buy a Thunderbird with the money and Simon said he appreciated her honesty? I'm sure his decision to cut the other fellow who answered that he'd give some to charity and invest $2000 (????) and give some more the charity . . . was based on the idea that he was borderline material and Simon was sick of hearing the "packaged answer." He's looking for someone who breaks the mold, both in singing ability and "pop" personality and this kid was trying to fit in. I can imagine that it will haunt him, as he said.

I loved the Indochine family, and I was near tears when his father, tears streaming down his face, was beaming at his son after the audition (and taking pictures with a really nice camera -- something must be going right for them in America!) I was a little sad that his father thinks it is too late for he and his wife to find "success" when they've been here since 1980, but the immigrant-makes-it-big angle will play well.

I also loved the little person that had such a big voice. I wondered, though, how her older sister felt watching mom tell millions of people how she couldn't compete with her little sister, who made cheerleader when she didn't (and now the first cut of AI).

My favorite last night was the football player. He was so funny, and his voice was awesome!

I also liked the guy who sang "Desperado" and the Chinese immigrant guy.

The "She Bangs" guy was so sweet! It was interesting that he was actually singing the right pitches and tune, which is better than most "bad" people, but his accent and his dancing made it bad. It was so funny!

What? No comments from last night's Hawaii auditions?

I really didn't think that that model had such a wonderful voice. I think her looks got her in.

And what about that Winnie the Pooh get up on that one dude? He sang a Christopher Robin song, for crying out loud! Good grief!

Good morning!

FOJMO, I agree with you about the model. I wasn't impressed with her voice at all. But, I don't think she'll be around long. Did you see the previews showing her and the kid who serenaded Paula last week (he was very into himself) in the hot tub in Hollywood?

I loved the end of the show when they showed scat girl, she bangs guy and ain't no mountain high enough. I think I laughed harder last night than I did when they originally aired. The she banged guy was so funny, I felt bad for him and I was glad he didn't get slammed.

I was shocked that they didn't Crystal (the girl who sang Beyonce's version of Swing Low Sweet Chariot) didn't make it to Hollywood. I thought she did a great job, and I really liked her voice. I thought they let several people through (like the nasal singing guy) who weren't half as good as Crystal. Oh well, such is life.

I also couldn't believe what a good, unique voice the "pen salesman" guy had. I laughed hysterically at all the footage of all the personality he had after he made it to Hollywood. It was like he was a total dud before when he was nervous, then he broke out of his shell and was so funny! :teeth:

We thought he was pretty funny too. For some reason, he reminded me of Will Ferrell. Anyone else think that too? I don't know if it was his curly hair or his goofiness after his audition but he was fun to watch.

I, too, loved the pen salesman. What a crack up. I think he will go far in this competition. Not only does he have a voice, but once he " breaks out of his shell", he will win over america. Looking forward to Monday to see who is "just like Clay Aiken". Hmmmmm
