Offered Virgin Seat Plus

A couple of weeks ago I booked 2 seats with Virgin from MAN to MCO out on 17th Sept 14, returning on the 28th Sept.
Yesterday I received a call from Virgin offering me 'Seat Plus' on our outbound flight for £60 (couldn't offer it to me on the return leg as it was full apparently).
Is this standard practice that they try to offload spare seats 9 months in advance?! Seems a bit odd to me, surely they have time to sell the seat at full price.

I received a call yesterday offering me extra legroom seats on the outbound route,i declined, as I already booked them coming home I thought it was premature as we leave August!
