Off topic remarks

Now, I have to go and find the off topic thread about the train!!
That thread had the flames removed, and then it was closed. The "off-topic" thread that praised BD was started because folks didn't like seeing BD being flamed. It was somewhat related to the flame war, so I felt it was appropriate to close it.

Wow, I really feel out of the loop right now! Which thread was flaming BD? I find that hard to believe...Could someone please PM me and fill me in...if you don't mind.

There have been a few times that I felt others answered something to me in a rude way. I first thought it was me and just eventually let it go but recently found out this person was what I had thought all along. She finally showed her true colors in another uproarious thread so the saying holds true, What goes around comes around!

Okay, folks, it happened about 24 hours ago, and the offending remarks were stricken this morning, so you may not have seen it happening.

An occasional poster to this board and Buckaroo's Dad apparently exchanged barbs on another thread 2-3 nights ago. The first poster is somewhat reactionary. I remember him from some of the ugly flame wars that we had on this board last Summer and Fall.

Last night, this poster responded appropriately to a thread that was on-topic. BD responded to this poster's post with a reply that was a little sharp-tongued for him (apparently he was already aware of this other person's character).

Poster #1 responded with, and I'm paraphrasing here... "How dare you, buddy?!? Let's take this out into the alley."

This was the first time I'd seen this poster on this board in awhile, so I tried to gently explain to him that he was overreacting... that BD often responds with sarcastic wit. I was also, since I remembered this poster from previous flame wars, trying to temper his quick temper.

It was to no avail. He brushed off my comments about BD, and he and BD exchanged a few flames.

Another thread, supporting BD, popped up in response to this flame war. The flames were excised from the first thread this morning and that thread was closed.

Thread #2 was closed at the same time since it was "off topic". During the short time it was open, at least a dozen people posted to praise BD. Some of those folks, perhaps, were unaware of the flame war that inspired the thread's creation. If so, that's why they might be puzzled that the thread was closed.

I think our moderators here do a great job. We haven't had the persistant flame wars lately like we had last Summer and Fall (at least I don't think we have... I don't read each and every thread like I used to). Sometimes our moderators make a judgement call that some of us don't agree with, but for the most part they get it right. Kudos to TnRobin (and Michelle).

thanks for explaining Dave...can always count on your diplomacy & thoroughness!!

I thought it may be something like that as I was trying to piece things together from the other threads you mentioned that are still open. No wonder BD seemed to be keeping a low profile. Hope things "simmer" down soon...

MUST BE A FULL MOON!!!

it's the line under your name, the Tag Fairy puts something witty in color... took me a long time to get tagged, but took BD longer than me... some people get a tag quick, sometimes it takes a while..

All I know is I'm not touching my tag... ok, BD, I'm ready
:jester:

Dave, I agree - well written summary. I like the tag too - even if you didn't think you needed one :)

The moderators have a very hard job to do and do a great job of it. I stayed out of the first thread because the flames looked a little too high by the time I started reading. Instead I took my support to pm. I posted on the second thread in show of support but was not surprised when it was closed. I think it was a good call.

We all have to realize that we only see small parts of peoples personalities here in a electronic community. Sometimes we get to see more and more of that personality either in person or behind the scenes in pm's and e-mails. Yes, even those people who come across on the boards as saints can come of different behind the scenes and those who can appear sarcastic can actually be very caring behind the scenes.

If I have a problem with someone I'm not afraid to tell them in a pm. If I feel that someone needs support I'll pm them as well. I've even given a certain poster the benefit of the doubt and tried to be helpful even after many, many whiny posts - but when I felt they crossed the line I had no trouble pm'ing them and telling them I wouldn't be helpful any more.

The DIS is an online community and as such has many different personalities. You may not really like your next door neighbor, but as long as they don't break the rules of the community you can get along. When disagreements get heated it is up to the cop on the beat (known here as the mods) to break it up. Not an easy job, but one that is best for the community as a whole.

So please educate me - someone, anyone - as to the big deal involved with "going off topic".

I'm sorry, this is "off topic"......lol

Since I started this "train"......I have never had a problem with off topics and have started many a strange reply myself FREQUENTLY.

I like shrimp. Some people don't.
I like Abbott and Costello. Some people don't.

Is one right and the other wrong? No. We have a difference of opinion. Same with people. Regardless if a poster "likes" what I say or not, it is my right to say it. They can ignore me and never hurt my feelings at all. And I come across on the boards, exactly as I am.......minus some "language" though! Hey, I'm not a saint!!

I have had to put people on my Ignore List for my own sanity and when I see a posting, I can just bypass it.

Yes, off topics are a great way to get to meet people and then pm's can be shared. I get a lot of PM's and some of them are just so wonderful, I wish I could share them with everyone!!

I think we all understand that some people don't care for them but others do - so what's the answer? Read what you like and ignore the rest!

God bless you and keep you safe, happy and healthy - and if you don't believe in God, well, you are on your own!

Off topic?? Ok. I wonder how Verandah Boy is doing?

Asking for prayers for a family here in Rockaway who lost a loved one on 9/11/01. A construction worker discovered human remains on top of some scaffolding near Ground Zero. The family is hoping that it is their son, a firefighter. It isn't likely, however, like many families, some closure is needed. Please keep them and all of the victims and heros of 9/11 in your prayers on this eve of the two year anniversery.

Take care of each other

Ursula

Ursula -
You know you just put things into perspective -

Spoke to Andy last night, no word about Nate yet. Just praying that they have the most wonderful time together.

Rae

Thanks, Rae. Any info on Verandah Boy is always appreciated. That kid really tugs at my heartstrings.

Ursula

Haven't heard anymore about Nate and his family since Dan's post the other day. Today they will be in St. Thomas I know that much!!!

Yes. Let's indeed remember 9-11, and remember to pray for those families that lost loved ones. We have a family in our town that lost a 21 year old son.He was working in the second tower that got hit. He was a local football star of the high school that I graduated from, and very well respected young man.

Is the way we pray for each other.
