Off topic: camping near Tuscaloosa and GA

We are moving to Virginia. Going to head across through Tuscaloosa (to pay a little visit to the school). Anyone know of good camping around there?

Also, headed to the fort in September from Virginia. What's a good spot to stop midway? Or do you do the entire drive and stop nearby? I know I've seen some of yall that drive down from the east coast.

We will be tent camping if that changes your suggestions.

Lake Lurleen State Park would be the place to stay. If you are coming up the interstate, take the exit just before town that has the toll bridge over the river and puts out you on Hwy 82 past the airport.

I hope he is referring to the original location in Jerusalem Heights. It's a chain now and there is a location just across the river from downtown but it's not the original. Plus if hubs has been to town he probably knows my recommended spots anyway.

Reed Bingham is a nice place to stop just north of the GA/FLA border. If you stay there, make sure you eat at the Catfish House just outside the park. http://gastateparks.org/ReedBingham

Agree with Ed 100% on Lake Lurleen. I actually own 60 acres of land in Tuscaloosa County on hwy 171 and we have spent a lot of time at that state park.

The topography is that the back road where the bathhouse is between #22 and #27 is higher than the lakefront road #1-#15. Also the right hand side is lower than the left hand side. #30a is the highest point in the loop. Here is a satellite view.



The waterfront (green numbers) sites are pretty but a little awkward. Most have a back-in/pad area but then the picnic table is down some steps near the water (like the picture on the LLSP Camping web page at the top). I like the blue numbers across from the lake #1-#13 because they are mostly level. You can choose to set up back under the trees or up closer to the road in the sun. I usually try to get #13 or #17 because that area has few trees, has lots of free space, and they could have probably put at least 2 more sites in there so you can have some space from your neighbor.

I have also camped in #22 or #20 (don't remember which) on a rainy weekend for proximity to bathhouse. I believe I read somewhere the bathhouses were recently renovated. I didn't camp here in 2015 but did in 2014.
