Off to the Land Down Under
Trip participants Colin (43) Me (38) and Zach (8)
Day 7 5th June 2003
Really fun day today!! Headed off to Mareeba in the jeep through some amazing scenery. Enormous termite mounds scattered everywhere and wetlands with herons taking off. First stop was the Golden Drop to stock up on Mango wine for Xmas Pressies, yummy tasting!!! Then we stopped off at Coffee world to spend way too much money to stock my freezer up with coffee beans.
Then it was the highlight of Zachs week the Mako Go-Kart track!! This was the first time ever in a kart and he was so sweet trundling around like a little old Sunday Driver. Colin lapped him several times, zooming around like a maniac!!! This place is amazing ( so Col tells me, being an aficionado of all things karting) Zach didnt do to badly for a 1st timer, 66 secs for his fastest lap. Col then moved on up to the 2* karts whilst Zach had another go, avoiding the grass verges this time. Finally Colin went on the big track for a go on the bigger 3* star cart for about 15 mins. Then we all piled back into the jeep and headed back to Kuranda.
What a difference from the other day. All the tourists had cleared off and the streets and park were full of drunken aborigines who had apparently just cashed their Social Security cheques that afternoon. Everywhere closed down at 3.00pm, so we just had a coffee and high tailed it very carefully down a very steep, very windy mountain road back to Cairns, where we just had to make the obligatory MacDonalds stop to get a happy meal for Zach. Then poodled on back to Port Douglas for dinner.
We went to a really divey looking place called the Iron Bar of all things, with loads of pictures on the walls showing men holding hands etc, but the place was full of families???? V. Strange. I had a rib eye steak and Col had pork, Zach had an ice cream sigh!! Then we all piled into the back bar to watch this strange phenomenon called Toad racing, which involved a very strange Aussie geezer, cane toads, volunteers and a bucket. Unhappily Zach drew a toad in the raffle so he was urged to pick his toad up and kiss it before placing it in the bucket to be piled out into the table then coaxed off the table and into another bucket. Most of them ended up on the floor amid horrified squeals and drawing up of legs. Zach refused to kiss his toad needless to say, but at least he washed his hands afterwards, unlike all the other kids gross!!! Then finally back to bed!
