An Introduction and My Disney History

Hi, I want to introduce myself to anyone who is reading my trip report that doesn’t already know me from the DIS. My name is Mindy, and I am a mid 40’s mother of 3. I’ve visited Walt Disney World with my family in the 70’s twice. The first time was probably shortly after it opened. I still have the Minnie Mouse that my parents bought me on that trip. Her clothes disintegrated, but she survives. I visited the Magic Kingdom and River Country on a trip with a friend in 1984. Then, I didn’t go back to Disney until I took my oldest daughter on her first visit in 1990 when she was almost 2. Our next trip wasn’t until 10 years later in 1990 when my daughter was 12 and my son 8.
Our next trip was in 2005 when we went down during spring break right after my son’s Bar Mitzvah. That trip was pretty eye opening. By that trip, we had a 16 ½ year old daughter, a 13 year old son and a 2 ½ year old girl. We stayed at the All Star Music. Not the family suites, they didn’t have those yet. We quickly learned that even if you can squeeze yourselves into the hotel room, you won’t have enough drawer space. It took some time to get ready in the morning. We had to work out a system where my son got up and showered and dressed first, then he’d head for breakfast, my husband and I got up and got ourselves and the baby ready, and we headed out for breakfast, then after we left, our 16 year old would do the same. By the time we were all ready to head to a park, it was nearly lunch time. That sure didn’t work. So, we didn’t plan another Disney trip for now.
Then in 2007, my sister suggested a trip with just the two of us, my now 4 year old daughter and her then 10 year old son. We stayed at Pop Century. We were on the meal plan. This was a transformative trip. We had such a fantastic time. We also discovered Dole Whip this trip. It was during this trip that I noticed all the DVC booths and grabbed a brochure while my sister kept us tight on our schedule. And to make an even longer story shorter, I decided to buy a DVC share at Saratoga Springs. We did all the sales work from home. It has been the best investment we’ve ever made. So then after we made our first DVC visit during Thanksgiving week 2007, staying in a 2 bedroom villa at Saratoga. We bought annual passes for myself, DH and my younger daughter for that trip. We then returned in April 08 for spring break in a studio at Saratoga and squeezed another trip in Oct 08 for MNSSHP and F&W in a studio at Old Key West. Then came one trip in 2009 in July when we brought my Mother in law and niece along. This year, in 2010, we visited twice already.. and we have to hurry with this trip report as we leave in 46 days for Thanksgiving week at Saratoga Springs.

This trip report is our August 2010 trip. The background on this trip, is that my son Max, now 18, selected Florida Tech for his college. He’s majoring in mechanical engineering. So, we were going to need to drive him, and all his worldly possessions to Florida Tech, in Melbourne.

So, we packed up our 2001 Chevy Venture (with a broken gas gauge) with everything we needed to take Max to school and then Heidi to Disney World for a week afterwards. As usual, we planned to get on the road early, around 9am. What time did we actually get on the road? 2:30pm. Once we got moving, we hit traffic on I95 at the mixing bowl, it was bumper to bumper all the way to the Fredericksburg/Ft. A.P. Hill exit. I put on my headphones and listed to my Disunplugged podcasts. I was way behind. The discussion was about Christmas and the Candlelight processional. Didn’t really apply to me, but it was just nice to listen to it.

Since we left so late, we didn’t make it to anywhere in Georgia. We usually stop in the Savannah are or Kingsland. We stopped in Lumberton, N.C. We found a nice clean Comfort Suites with a fridge and micro that we didn’t even need at this point for $71.99. We just brought in our overnight bags and got ready for bed right away. The next morning, we ate breakfast at the hotel’s complimentary hot breakfast and we were on the road by 8:30am.
On Monday August 9th we arrived at the Melbourne Beach Front Hilton about 6:00pm. At 10:00am we had phoned the hotel to give them our ETA and they said our room was ready. Well, this room that was ready suddenly had workmen fixing the A/C. The room was boiling hot as the A/C had not been working. Since it was so late when we’d arrived we were hoping to quickly change for the beach and get out there before the sun was down too far. Now how was I going to get ready with these workmen in my room. Grrrr. Once the workmen finished, we changed quickly and got our chairs and beach bag, and headed to the beach, by then it was 6:45pm. There was not much sun left on the beach. The building cast a shadow covering the whole beach sand. Heidi decided she’d play in the sand, which she managed to have fun with. I just got my feet wet at the edge of the beach. It didn’t make sense at this point to go in the water and bother to get wet. As the sun went down, we decided that we needed to find a place to eat. We asked at the front desk where the best places to go would be. The first place we were sent to was out of the question as after 6:00pm you have to be 21 to get in. That definitely doesn’t work for Max or Heidi. The 2nd place she sent us to had such thick cigarette smoke in the air that that place was out of the question too. We ended up finding a McDonalds then going to Wal-Mart to buy sticky-notes (for auto flushing toilets), lemonade, a comb and some wipes.

On Tuesday morning the sun was shining and it looked like a beautiful beach day. Sucks to be us because we have to go to the college for the orientation. I’m hoping we’ll get back in time to visit the beach later.

40605_419307092893_674127893_4880565_6983059_n.jpg

There is no free breakfast at the hotel. In fact, they just have an expensive buffet. So off we go to Burger King for egg biscuits on our way to orientation.
We help Max move into his dorm. Lucky us, the elevators are having a problem and they put the luggage in it, but people have to use the stairs. This wasn’t bad enough, but it kept raining on and off the whole time we’re unloading the van. A pushing luggage cart like hotels have would have been so helpful as we have lots of small things. Max meets his room-mate and we head off to the reception for food and free stuff.
By the time we get back to the hotel in the evening, it is raining. Sorry, no beach for us.
The next morning, another beautiful beach day, but this time we have to check out. We couldn’t find a good place for breakfast and have to skip it as we are running late. We arrive late to orientation and miss the first session of the Pro-track/Fast-track presentation, but luckily there are so many people trying to get in that they schedule a 2nd session.
We spend most of the day at the college, we have lunch there at a nice reception. There is an opening ceremony at the college and then we’re finally on the road to Disney.

We arrive at the Pop in the late afternoon/early evening. We have done online check-in for the first time. We arrive to find that there isn't anybody in the lobby anyway, so we go to the online check-in line. I have requested first floor, 70's section. Well, that is what they gave us. We were given building 6, first floor, 70's section. Seems nice. But wait.... there's a problem. We get to our room, which couldn't be much further from the main building without being in the lake and find out.... uh oh.... that sidewalk right next to our corner room, that is the SMOKING SECTION. I never thought about that. I DO NOT want to be anywhere near where the smokers are hanging around smoking. Cigarette smoke is the one thing that chokes me instantly. So... back to the front desk we go. I tell them that the room is quite nice, clean and rehabbed, but .. "can you move us away from the smoking area". So the Australian lady with the cute accent who is checking us in consults with Mr. Manager from Waco Texas. They have several options for us. I had really thought the elevator was going to be a problem, but the other options put us in 50's which wasn't rehabbed. I wanted rehabbed. So, I consented to 2nd floor, building 6, facing the foosball table courtyard. WOW!! What a great location. I'm happy!!! The elevator was there every single time we pressed the button. Ding... its here!! No problems. We were very close to the elevator, so no trouble. Here is a pic I took when we finally got settled.

We really had hoped to visit the parks tonight, but it was late and we were tired, so we decided to head to Downtown Disney instead. First we headed to the Pop food court to get something for supper, then we browsed around Downtown Disney. Came back and unpacked a little, then went to sleep. The card on the dresser says Zoila is our mousekeeper. Good to know.

Here is a photo of my Disboards flag that I made. I attached my pins to it since I ran out of room on my lanyard.

Here is a picture of Heidi in the morning.. so cute:

So we headed out to the Pop food court for breakfast. I brought my Kashi Go Lean cereal in a Tupperware cereal keeper, my Tupperware cereal bowl and we bought new refillable mugs. Somehow, I didn't think they'd like me filling up my Year of A Million Dreams mugs. I went to fill my new mug with coffee... but where is the non-dairy creamer? :confused3 I'm looking all over the place. Surely they must have some. No luck. Where is it? I finally see a man who looks like a manager standing in the middle of the food court. I ask him about the locaiton of the creamer. He does more than tell me where the cremaer is. Its in the back actually, so the specialty items don't get contaminated with other things. So he asks me what kind of non-dairy creamer I want. He brings out the chef to introduce himself to me. The chef told me about all their options. He offered me fat-free Lactaid milk. Perfect!! He goes into the back, and comes back out with a whole cup of it. More than 8 ounces and there was no charge! :yay: My DH goes through the food line with Heidi and gets her scrambled eggs and gets some for himself.

We finish breakfast and decide we'd better head to Hollywood Studios since Toy Story Midway Mania is going to be closing for rehab in a few days. This is the very first time that we've been to Disney and didn't go to the Magic Kingdom First.

I no longer remember why... but instead of heading to Toy Story Mania, we decided to go back and check out Streets of America. Maybe we did go to TSMM and there was too long of a line? Don't remember anymore, but we did go back to streets and it was pretty empty, so I took some pictures.

So... after hanging out at the Streets of America area, we decide to head to the Lights, Motors, Action Stunt show. Despite the many times we've been to Disney, we actually had never managed to get to it. We thought it would be a nice change to see something new. It was stupefyingly hot, so we filled up with cold drinks and headed to the area where you wait to enter the theatre stadium. While waiting for the show to begin, they herd you in like cattle to an area that is actually blocked by a gate, so you think you're about to get it, but there is a gate. While waiting, I accidentally step in some gooey green chewing gum that someone was kind enough to leave on the walkway. :headache: I then have to spend the next 15 minutes trying to scrape it off on the curb and any patch of grass that comes along. Why do people even think that dropping their gum in an area where people gather would be a good idea? So finally, the cast member that is guardian of the gate, opens the gate wide and we're led across to the entrance of the stadium. We sort of file in and everyone rushes across the seating area. We end up with seats that aren't too bad. We're a little off to the side, but near the front, and there is enough of a breeze here. The rows up further have a fan mounted on the ceiling, but they must be stuffier or they wouldn't have that fan there, so we settle in.

It was really hot in there, but we really enjoyed the show. I had previously skipped it because I thought it wasn't the type of thing I'd like, but it was really good.

Ok, now the comments...

Your hotel on the beach looks amazing! I am not a beach goer...but that almost looks like it would convert me.

Heidi is too cute. I love sleeping children pics.

I stayed at Pop first week in September and I immediately got moved too. (not for the same reason) I was happy at how accommodating the cm was in finding a different room. As for the smoking section...I hear ya! I cant be near smoke either. I am not sure what day it was (so I doubt it will make my tr) but we came back to the room to see we had a new neighbor. Our neighbor was standing outside our rooms with her door open. Guess what she was doing? Smoking!!! :scared1: She darted inside just before we came up. Needless to say I was quick to go to the front desk!

Question about the DVC... you stayed at Pop...not DVC. Do you mind if I ask...was it for free dinning? Because, you can't use points for Pop..right? I was looking into DVC a bit (obviously on a little bit) before this last trip of ours and I wondered if you lose out on the promos when you use DVC.

Can't wait to read more!

Yeah.. my first follower!! Actually, the reason we stayed at Pop and not DVC is that we used up our DVC annual allotment of points in March when we stayed in a 2 bedroom villa during spring break. I could have borrowed ahead on our 2010 allotment of points that we receive on Dec 1st (we receive our points for the year on Dec 1 because we have a Dec contract--which has nothing to do with our signing date) but we are also going back for our 3rd 2010 trip for Thanksgiving. Which, magically, is still prior to our 2010 allotment date of Dec 1st, so we still have to borrow them ahead. If we'd borrowed ahead and used the points for August, we'd be out of luck for Thanksgiving because we can't borrow 2011's allotment before the 2010 allotment comes. We will be staying in a 2 bedroom villa in November (my sister and her family are joining us), so it made sense for trip #2 to stay at the Pop Century to save money. We were able to afford 8 nights with that choice. There were only the 3 of us for August because Max was now in college and Lily was with her husband in New York. I didn't get free dining because we went for the Annual Pass room-only discount. With DVC, you have a separate price structure for our annual passes and it is about $100 less than the non-DVC annual pass. For this year it definitely paid to renew our annual passes for me, DH and Heidi. Max doesn't have an AP, but as a full-time Florida college student, he can get a Florida resident pass, so I'll have to get him one when he arrives at Disney on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

I don't really feel that we miss out on discounts. Disney promotional discounts (like free dining) are pretty much here because of the recession. They'll go away eventually. With our DVC membership and our Annual Passes, we get lots of extra perks and discounts. We just don't seem to ever get pin codes. Probably because they know our household will be back. I'm very glad I bought into DVC. I think its the best investment I ever made and my money is safer supporting Disney than it was riding the rollercoaster in the stock market. I only wish we had bought more points. I'm becoming chronically short because we always seem to need a 2 bedroom villa during a busy time of year. Like spring break.

Apparently, I left out what happened upon arrive at DHS. After we got through the security check and the ticket turnstiles I gave DH, Heidi's and my tickets and he sped off to get our fast passes for TSMM. As usual, about the very second we walked into any park, it started to rain, so we put on our ponchos and Heidi and I ambled back toward Pixar Place taking time to look into the store windows. When we arrived at Pixar place, DH had our fastpasses for 6:00pm. Now, this was still around 10:00am, but since they still even HAD passes for the day and it wasn't at rope drop, I was happy with that. So THEN, that's when we decided to head to Streets of America.

I left off at the end of Lights Motors Action. So we really enjoyed the show. So as we headed out, we decided to see what else we had not done at DHS. We decided to head to Indiana Jones.

It rained on and off on our way to Indiana Jones. We got there, and the cast member beckoned us to come inside, but saying there was standing room only. Since it was going to be a long wait for the next show, we though that maybe standing room only was better than not seeing it at all. So went filed inside with the last of the line. The instructed us to stand behind the last row of seats. I was behind a handicapped seating area. There was a yellow line painted on the floor behind the seats and we were instructed not to step over the line by the storm troopers from Star Tours apparently. It was really hot and several families in this line of standers had small children. Some parents were leaning on a brick wall that was at the back of the theatre a few feet behind us. Their children stood on the wall. This looked like a good idea to me. Otherwise they couldn't see. The storm troopers came out several times to tell the parents they could not lean on the brick wall or let their children see.. I mean stand on the wall. As there was plenty of wall space between the wall and the back row of seats I didn't see why they had to be so picky. If you don't want people standing or leaning on the wall, then don't invite them in for standing room only! :sad2:

The show itself was good. Somehow we had never managed to include that show in our touring plans. Probably because "stunt show" just wasn't something that I normally choose. But we like the show. I would have liked to be in a seat because of the intense heat. But, since we were standing in the back, we also could get out of there rather quickly.

By this time we decided that we were done, and we headed back to the buses to go back to the Pop. As it was before, its a very short ride. When we got back to the room, it wasn't raining but was very hot. We got something for lunch at the Pop food court and then got ready for the pool. Heidi wanted to do the 90's pool. We inflated her Bruce The Shark, grabbed our beach bag and headed to the pool. We found a table with some chairs and settled down. sniff sniff.... what is that.... where? ugh! A smoker. Wait a minute...??? Smoking at the pool? Is that allowed? I walk over to the life guard and ask her if people are supposed to be allowed to smoke around the pool. Her answer was not diffinitive. She said they could but they're supposed to smoke in the designated smoking areas. She said she'd talk to them. So, she went over and spoke to them. They loudly complained that someone had complained, but then the smokers in the group went over to the designated smoking area, which was over by the laundry room at some benches. Finally.. the coast was clear! So, then I needed to use the bathroom. So I went over to the pool building that looks like an old CD player or something. This is also where the washers and dryers are. I put my key in the door, but it wouldn't open. I then had to go over to the life guard and ask her if the bathrooms are supposed to be locked. I told her that at other pools they were unlocked or your room key would open them. She said that they were not supposed to be locked. So she had to call maintenance to come unlock the bathrooms. When maintenance arrived, he noted that the bathrooms were not supposed to be locked, and that the door seemed to have a problem, but he let me in. We went back over to do some swimming. The pool was nearly empty. My daughter took her Bruce the Shark over to the pool. The lifeguard came over and told us that we couldn't have the inflatable shark in the pool. I could understand if it had been crowded.. but it wasn't. :confused3 There were all of 6 people in the whole pool. Fine.... we put Bruce back on a pool chair. This particular pool has not one single speck of shade. It was very hot. The pool water wasn't even refreshing, so after about an hour we decided to go get dressed and head back to the park with our fastpass.

Hi, Mindy! I'm here! And your pictures of Pop are making me wonder if my Max wouldn't love it there. Then again, all of that, combined with the parks, just might lead to total overload.

Hi Tina,

Yes, since all the resorts are great in their own way, you can drive yourself crazy trying to pick THE best experience. We picked Pop because Heidi loves it. We are DVC members, but we used up our point allotment for this year doing a 2 bedroom villa at Saratoga during spring break, since we need the 2 bedroom at Saratoga again for Thanksgiving, and will have to borrow ahead on our points for that, we went with the Pop. I kinda wanted to try CB or PO, but saving several hundred $ made more sense. Especially since Heidi loves it so much.

Hey Mindy,

I'm here!:surfweb: Great start. I dropped my first DD off at college this summer too. She chose a school just outside of Boston so I couldn't squeeze in a trip to Disney at the same time. (How inconsiderate of her, I know!):rotfl: We both have children with ages that are far apart so I have feeling we may have alot in common. :woohoo: Looking forward to more of your report! popcorn::

I'm so glad you joined me. I've left off in the middle of Aug. 12th which was our 1st full day at Disney. My pages are falling out of my cheap journal so I have to tame them! Its raining, so I'm feeling really draggy and am not thinking that I'm going to make the yoga class in 35 minutes. I've got a huge to-do list not even to mention planning work for our November trip. I'll be updating today though for sure. :yay:

Oh... NOOOOOOOO I just typed up a whole day.. and was ready to post and I hit something accidentally and it all disappeared. Now I have to retype the whole thing!! ughhhhhh

Ok, so we get dressed, go back out to the buses and wait for the bus to DHS. The bus comes pretty quickly and we board for a 10 minute ride to the DHS. We arrive at 6:30pm and head straight to Toy Story Midway Mania. We get in line, grab our 3D glasses
40944_419667952893_674127893_4889116_6997511_n.jpg

and move along passed the people in the stand-by line. We walk til we get pretty close to the front and then the line stops. There seems to be alot of people returning with their fastpasses. So we wait.... and we wait.... hmmm now we've waited about 25 minutes but it doesn't seem like we've moved in a while. People are talking ...some said something about a break down. Then its true... a cast member comes out and tells us the ride is closing for break-down. We can come back later. Short panic ..... what about my fast pass?! On our way out, there was a cast member handing out special fastpasses that will allow us to come back anytime between when it comes back online through Aug. 15th which is the last day before the ride is supposed to shut down for rehab. So, we decide that we might as well go somewhere for dinner. We don't really like the choices at DHS and we don't have any ADR's so we decide to go to EPCOT and try to get into Via Napoli. Via Napoli has just opened about a week ago and its having a soft opening. Its open, but no ADR's needed until Sept. something. So we have just as good a chance as anybody else. We head down to the boat dock for the ride over to EPCOT. The boat is there... uh oh... run.... run... run.. the captain sees us and waits for us. We board and its a pleasant ride to first, the Swan and Dolphin...
40194_419669272893_674127893_4889139_6694698_n.jpg
then we stop at the Boardwalk, then Beach Club and then we dock at EPCOT.. ok... we get to the turnstiles.... uh oh.... what happens when we walk through turnstiles? RAIN!! quick... get out ponchos. Ummm....its really hot under this plastic rain poncho. We decide to wait in the World Gateway Giftshop. We hang out in there for a bit until it seems to stop enough to make a break for it.

Next up... Review of Via Napoli

I hate it when a post gets lost! I am glad it didn't discourage you though. Great update!

I love that entrance into Epcot. When we stayed at the Yacht Club in 09, we walked to Epcot..using that entrance. I am not sure why, but it seems so more relaxed.
