Now keep in mind that i've lived in Boston practically my whole life. Does anyone have any suggestions for something fun and more importantly, free?

We've been to the Gardens, walked along the river, done all the touristy things...I need something new!!! please help!

This may not be something your comfortable with, but I found it interesting. I was in Boston probably 17 yrs ago for a seminar and DH and I happened across this while out walking.

The Old Granary Burial Ground
Park Street Church, the site of the old town granary where grain was kept before the Revolution, dates back to 1809. This Evangical Church of "firsts" is the location of the first Sunday school in 1818 and the first prison aid in 1824. On July 4, 1829, William Lloyd Garrison gave his first public anti-slavery speech here and two years later, "My Country 'Tis of Thee" was sung for the first time by the church children's choir.

At least 1,600 people are known to have been buried in this tiny graveyard, as the land-poor colonial Boston, old graves often were dug up to make way for new bodies; the spongy ground hastened deterioration.

Among those laid to rest at this stop along the Freedom Trail: Paul Revere, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, the victims of the Boston Massacre and Christopher Snider, a 12-year-old boy killed by a British soldier 11 days before the massacre.

The large central obelisk marks the graves of Benjamin Franklin's parents; Franklin himself, though born in Boston, died in Philadelphia. And Elizabeth Vergoose, buried here in 1690, is believed to be the prolific storyteller later immortalized as Mother Goose.

That's what I do. Sometimes I just have to "play" tourist. As much as I love the museums & NE Aqarium, when I want to do something different, I read the papers or check out these sites.

Are you looking for strictly Boston? What about Rockport, Plymouth, or the Cape (P-town must be fun right now just for the people watching!! LOL!). You didn't specify if this is for adults or for teens or little ones.

There is a beautiful park in Brookline (or JP - I can never remember which it is!) called Larz Anderson Park - it is a great place to walk around or have a picnic - for free! I'm sure it would be beautiful this time of year!

:earsgirl:

Thanks guys! I guess I should have specified! This is for me and BF, adults only, and somewhere T friendly.

Thanks!

Have you ever gone to the Maporium at the Christian Science Church? It's pretty neat to walk through, and it's free.

Have you ever been to the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum? It's really pretty in there and I think that one day during the week is either free or reduced price.

How about visiting all the college museums, they're pretty cheap. The Harvard museums are fun.

I second the Maparium at the Christian Science Center...it's breathtaking.

How about a walk through the Arnold Arboretum...you'll catch the end of the lilacs. The smell is beautiful and the grounds are peaceful and gorgeous.

Take a trip to one of the Harbor Islands...a great way to look at the city. Because you are looking back at it from the harbor. Some islands are more "deserted" than others. Most are great for picnicking, hiking, and, during the summer, swimming.

Also the lunch time harbor cruises are really fun...very cheap for an hour on the water. You can even bring your own lunch.

And I know this isn't Boston but it is T-accessible. Take the train to Providence for WaterFire. It's a truly spirit altering experience...you feel filled with life and calm all at the same time. Just beautiful. And there are some great galleries and restaurants there as well.

edited to add...

During the summer try Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell. Great fun...another picnic opportunity but remember the bug spray.

Take in a practice session at the Boston Symphony. Very cheap...typically filled with students and budget-minded music lovers.

Read the John Adams bio by McCullough and then visit Quincy, MA.

When the weather is nice, Hubby and I like walking around Castle Island in Southie. The Hatch Shell has free concerts on certain weekends/weeknights. You may want to check the Calendar section of the Boston Globe published on Thursdays. It has a lot of different activities which are free or very inexpensive. Annmarie

How about the Samuel Adams Brewery Tour? DH and I did that several years ago and it was cool.

I know we took the T down to the area it was in and had to walk about 3 blocks to the brewery.
