off site without car rental

We are staying at the Hawthorn Suites by Universal and they shuttle to all parks and gave me times. Has anyone ever done this? Or do you know rates for taxi it might come out the same I am getting 600+ dollars for rental.

600 for a rental is plain crazy. what are you dates? A weekly rental for a full size should be under $200.

i just did a quick search on www.travelocity.com and you can get a mini van for $434 total for you dates from Thrifty. I am sure if you did some research on www.mousesavers.com you could get a much better rate.

10 days is a long stay. You will definitly want your own transportation if you are staying off site. Taking taxis everywhere can add up very quickly.

How many are in your family? Could you make do with a full size?

The signature icons show a family of 6, so a mini-van it is. I am paying $600 for a minivan, but it is 11 days, pick up in Orlando and drop off in Nashville! There is no way you should be that high for Orlando! Keep working at it like prncess suggested.

I stayed offsite at US/IOA in 2000 without a rental car for four days, BUT it was two adults only! I would NEVER do it with the kids, and certainly not for that long. You'll need a grocery run or two, it'd be cheaper to drive to a laundromat to do your clothes, not much is walking distance for quick dinners, etc.

Keep working that rate---it's way too high!

Travelnow is showing 334 (plus tax/fees) for Budget. Try all your coupon/discount combinations.

I'd consider trying to stay on Universal property for 2 or 3 nights (Entertainment rate or Hotwire--carefull with amenities) and then get a suite hotel closer to Disney. Doubletree is in DTD (good bus service) and there is an Embassy suite. Alternatively you could rent a condo for a week (vistana, westgate...)

even if shuttles are good you have to think about what restaurants are walking distance to hotel and even a grocery store. OK for maybe a 3-4 day trip but a week offsite
w/o a car and kids along is too much. I stayed offsite with my brother and his 3 pre-teen DD's for 6 days and the car was an absolute must. Be sure to check Orbitz too.

Using VFLA code on dollar.com gave me a rate of 329.96 (before taxes etc) for your dates on a minivan. This is a weekly rate of $209.99 plus extra days for $39.99. You could consider renting for a week at the end of your trip if you wont' need it near the beginning. If you find a rental company that is located outside of the airport, that can also save you money, as you won't have to pay the 9.8% "airport concession recovery fee". Dollar has a rental desk at the Courtyard by Marriott, for example.

It'll probably cost more than $40 to get 6 people with luggage from the airport to the hotel. Depending on flight times it's possible they'll only need 2 extra days instead of 3.
