Off-limits clothes?

Three of the nights during our vacation will be Grad Nights. In looking at the information online, it states that clothing depicting school names or professional sports teams is not allowed.

Does this apply to the general public or just to graduates participating in grad night? I will be vacationing with my own 2 high school aged children, who often wear t-shirts with their high school name on them, or their favorite college or NFL teams. Is this going to be a problem?

I think this would be hard to enforce, considering there will be thousands of people at the park that are not part of Grad Nite. On an average day at the parks, this isn't a problem, so I'm guessing it should be okay.

Generally what Disney is more concerned about is clothing which communicates something gang related from Southern California locals. For some reason Oakland Raiders shirts correlate with gangs.

So in answer to the OP's question about your kids' NFL shirts... as long as they are not Raiders fans!

And if the kids are like 12 and under I doubt Disney would care at all. It is more teens and young adults.

I would be interested to know more about this too! My boyfriend may very well bring one of his Vancouver Canucks t-shirts and I can't see why he wouldn't be allowed to wear it.... but I do want to make sure just in case!

EDIT: According to Disneyland's website, these are the rules:

Clothing or tattoos with obscene, lewd or offensive language, graphics or designs
Clothing that could be construed as indecent, exposing excessive portions of skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environment (e.g., string bikini tops and bottoms, G-strings, excessively torn clothing)
Bare feet
Weapons or accessories that appear to be weapons (i.e., bullet belts)
Clothing or accessories that drag on the ground and create a potential tripping hazard
Wedding dresses
Sharp or pointed accessories that may cause injury
Masks or makeup that could be construed as part of a costume (with the exception of special events)
Exception: Attire intended to identify those wearing it is acceptable (e.g., military uniforms, cultural attire)

Nothing in there about teams or schools, must be a grad night thing! Probably to prevent rivalry related arguments.

DH wears U of A clothing to Disneyland all the time, no problems there. I believe this policy is only for grad nights, so daytime clothing would be fine and you would only have to worry about this if you were participating in grad night itself.

There are many, many schools represented there, and there are some schools that are HUGE rivals. They are just trying to keep problems from happening.

ive got a tat of a hatchet man and it has not been made to be covered. I know some Gang symbols on tats shirts and hats have been asked to be covered up I have heard of it but it has not happened to me. I think schools will be allowed to wearing school shirts its also how schools keep an eye on big groups like uniforms.

But I am just guessing and putting my 2 cents in

I've got a few tat's myself, and have never been asked to cover them up (mind you they are not in the remotest sense considered lewd, crude or rude). The way I view things is what may not be offensive to one person, may be highly offensive to the next, especially when it comes to highly volatile school rivals. It's Disneys way of keeping this down to a min, during a time of celebration, and under the circumstances who can blame them.

Acceptable Attire for Disney Grad Nite

Dress to Impress: What's in and what's out for Disney Grad Nite Apparel.
Boys
Casual pants (including khaki style and jeans), shirts with collar (golf style shirts, dress shirts), sport jackets, dress suits, comfortable shoes (including tennis shoes, dress shoes, and boots). Girls
Dresses, skirts, shorts, casual pants (including jeans), blouses and tops, and comfortable shoes (including tennis shoes, dress sandals, and boots).

We've got your back, and to make sure things run smoothly, we'll be searching everyone and their belongings before entering the Park, So, here are the things that need to be left at home:
Any clothing affiliated with a school, professional sports team, group, club, etc.
Clothing not in good repair (torn jeans, pants, shirts, etc. ) Jeans are okay as long as they are not ripped or torn.

Also, Walt Disney World Cast Members have the right to refuse admission to anyone they deem not appropriately dressed for the event and not following these guidelines. The dress code for Disney Grad Nite will be enforced throughout the event by all Cast Members working the event.

My kids are 14 and 17. They both own clothing from Texas A&M, KU, North Carolina, Kansas City Chiefs, and their own high school that they wear frequently. Do you think this will be a problem?

No. There is a screening process usually for the GradNite kids where they look for this. Your kids won't be with the school coming in, so there shouldn't be an issue.

The clothing rules are only for those attending grad nights. There is no clothing rules enforced to regular park guests (aside from the no costumes over the age of 8 or 9).

During grad nights, they do not allow you wear you school's attire with your school logo/mascot on it. It doesn't make sense, but I believe they do it to avoid any drama with high school rivalries.

The park closes early for Grad Nights, so it doesn't matter what the general public wears. The Grad Night kids, however, must abide by the clothing restrictions or they simply can't go in.

I have Raiders shirts and a Raiders sweatshirt, I wear them to the parks, not all the time because I have a lot of Disney clothes but I do wear them on the days we head for home. There's never been a problem.....

I believe they also have to stay in dress code with their schools, as well. I know on my grad night to Great America we weren't allowed to wear shots and tank tops that we wouldn't 'wear to school.' I'm not sure why Disneyland is so against having school shirts, because they gave us alumni shirts to wear at our grad night park, haha. But I think PP are right, it probably has to do with school rivalries/gangs.

I have Raiders shirts and a Raiders sweatshirt, I wear them to the parks, not all the time because I have a lot of Disney clothes but I do wear them on the days we head for home. There's never been a problem.....

Last time I was at DLR wearing my Denver Broncos shirt I got thumbs up from security. I saw them eyeing the folks wearing Raiders shirts though...

Seriously, by BIL works law enforcement in SoCal and I have heard him talk about gang issues, etc., especially at places like Six Flags Magic Mountain where they have had big problems with gangs.

In any case, we all know Disney is big on security and I don't know how Disney handles "gang attire" - but, for example, here is a 2007 article from a SoCal newspaper:

Ha! Times have changed. When I did Grad Nite in the eighties, participants had to be dressed up- like dress shirts and ties for the boys and dresses or skirts for the girls. I guess they figured the better we dressed the better we would behave!
We still had a blast!
