2005...our honeymoon. Booked a standard room at BC. Somewhere along the way we were upgraded to waterview (I discovered it when I received our confirmation info a few weeks before the trip). When we checked in, the CM at the desk handed us our room key...room 5XXX. Holy handgrenade! That's the concierge floor! I was scraping my jaw off the floor and she just smiled at us and said "Have a magical honeymoon!". We were gobsmacked! beautiful room on the concierge floor overlooking the lake and just above the rear main entrance to the lobby.

YC : garden to lake view. That said we book the room type we want and expect nothing more.

Not a whole lot to tell. Was once upgraded to preferred room at sports. Other than that we've been moved up to higher views whenever we are booked at rock bottom views. Got massive room at Boardwalk with 2 balconies once. It just seems like every time I checkin with my kids with me, we get bumped up. No kids and we only get exactly what we paid for.

11/1 -- upgraded from standard view to water view at POR

2/4. Wilderness lodge--upgraded from woods to courtyard view; poly--upgraded from garden to theme park view. Did not ask either time--just awesome pixie dust!!

I book the category I want and don't ask for upgrades. Pleasantly surprised a few times with upgrades.

39/4 upgrade
CBR standard to preferred, BC standard to lagoon, 2x AKL standard to savanna before AKL had DVC. CBR and BC upgrades check-in CMs commented it was because we were repeat visitors. AKL comment was made about kids and animals. All the stays were 3 or 4 days in these cases.

39/1 downgrade
BWI beds for 5 to BWV studio beds for 4 and an aerobed. It was Star Wars weekend, BWI was overbooked, no other option offered. 1 night stay, annual passholder rate.

Also, DVC stays, 10/1 upgrade to nicer view, AKL category booked not available due to maintenance.

POR- asked for mansions, received Alligator Bayou, but was placed in bldg. 15, which is now considered preferred. Had a corner king room which we also didn't pay/ask for.

CBR- we paid for a king room, but none available, so instead of a refund, we received a waterview room. We were not happy about this. We didn't really care about the water view, especially when it was on the other side of the resort from the main building. I wouldn't call this an upgrade, but we made the best of it.

POFQ. no upgrade. We paid for river view and received it.

WL- we paid for woods view and were upgraded to waterview. The best upgrade we've received yet by far. Beautiful view!

BLT- paid for standard view. Actually had a Bay Lake view.

YC- went on convention rate. Had a pool view.

YC- went on convention rate. Received lake view overlooking the gazebo. Great view as we could see Illuminations from our balcony.

SoG- coming up in 28 days....paid standard....we'll see!

When occupancy was low a few years ago, we always got upgrades. Now that the resorts are getting filled again, we haven't been upgraded for about 2 yrs now, and we go 2x a year in low seasons. Jan & Aug.
but, we have gotten all our room requests

6/0 - but each stay was 14 nights + and I've heard rumours that shorter stays are more likely to be upgraded.

We have paid for a pool view at AKL because we like the location of the pool view rooms and the view does look lovely. If I was offered an upgrade to Savannah miles away from the lobby, I'm not sure I'd take it.

Pool view to concierge however...
