DD had this small rash I was keeping an eye on. It has started to spread. It started out on her belly, now its on her chest, a few on her legs, one on her cheek, one on her nose, and one on her "area". Its not chicken pox, that I know. It looks like a mix between bugbites and scratches, sort of. They're red bumps with red scab-like things on them. They feel kinda sand-papery. Not all them are scaby looking. The one on her nose is more like a rough patch. Any ideas?????

She has no fever, but does have a runny nose (If that helps at all).

Jules,
Could it be scarlet fever or something like that? My DD would get a rash with a viral infection when she was younger and had a mild form of scarlet fever.

Maybe it's Fifth Disease. Once they get the rash they are no longer contagious. Both my kids had it last year. It only lasted about 2 weeks.

She still has the rash? I assume it doesn't look like her friend's rash...

It sounds like a doctor's visit is in order tomorrow.

I don't think its fifth's disease. She had that a couple years ago and it looks nothing like it. I'm stumped as to what it could be. I haven't switched detergent, soap, fabric softner, or anything.

BTW, did you know that if you bathe your child in baking soda, it should be tepid water, not warm. Well, I didn't. I made her itch more. :(

Donna, yes she still has it and its spreading. It looks nothing like her friends rash did.

I called the healthline and they told me to call her dr. tomorrow and make an appointment.

Could this possibly be ringworm..? I caught it when I was a child from petting neighborhood stray cats  It is a fungus that's pretty contagious

Ringworm Facts

Do you have any ibuprofen? As long as she isn't allergic to it, it should help her a little bit at least.

I meant Benadryl.

I read both links and don't think its either one of those. Hopefully its not, they sound like a PITA to get rid of.

Maybe impertigo? But I think the sores would be more oozy, I guess. I had this as a kid and it was yuck!! Well, hope the doctors can figure it out!

We went to the doctors tonight.

They don't know what it is. It doesn't look like a contact rash or allergic reaction to detergent, nor does it look poison ivy/oak/sumac/ect. They're treating her with Zyrtec and some other medicine and if it doesn't get better in 3 days we go back.

Hopefully it will get better with what they are doing. I've heard that childhood skin rashes are very difficult to diagnose.

even adult skin rashes.

i have sensitive skin and 90% of the rashes i have gotten have had my doctors scratching their heads.

good luck jules. i hope she feels better.

If the doc thinks it is an allergic reaction, possibly excema, ask him/her about a cream called Elidel. It is a non-sterodial cream that really works wonders. My 3yo DD has excema pretty badly, but as long as I really slock her up with Cetaphil after her batha dn put Elidel on any areas that start to get red, I can keep it under control. She also has prescription Claritin for allergies, but now I can't get her to take it so I have to see if there is something that tastes a little better!

Has she had strep throat? If not keep an eye on her she may develop strep in a few days. My best friends daughter had strep throat then it went away with antibiotics then a rash appeared and her strep throat was back. I read an article about it. I never new a rash was a sympton.
