I'm going to be at DL when the new star wars movie comes out. Does Disneyland's DD have a movie theater like wdw's does? If so, does it have assigned seats? If not, are there any theaters nearby that have assigned seats?

I like the downtown Disney AMC. It's much nicer than our local movie theater. We have been to several movies at the DtD AMC and have never had assigned seating.

ETA: There may be assigned seating in their IMAX theater. Yep, just went to look out of curiosity. Looks like when you buy your tickets online, you can choose seats for that screen.

Sweet. I need the assigned seating because I don't want to spend hours of my vacation time camped out in line.

Yes, there is a theater and I thought it was a nice one. Assigned seating seems to be much more common in other states. I have encountered it often elsewhere but only once in California. So, you might have a difficult time finding a nearby theater that offers that. However since the Star Wars premiere will be pretty big, especially in the DTD theater, things may be handled a little differently. I would suggest getting your tickets early, I imagine they will be selling out quickly!

1) To your original question...

DTD AMC Theater only has assigned seating for IMAX. Just know this IMAX theater is what film buffs refer to as "Fake IMAX."

Assigned seats are not really needed in most instances, but each to their own.

2) The only theater chain in LA/SoCal that does assigned seats with regularity is Arclight.

Closest Arclight is in Manhattan Beach.

3) For those who want Real IMAX, closest is Edwards at Irvine Spectrum

I'm not sure why you're assuming you won't have to spend hours in line...the same amount of people are let into the theater, even if your seat is booked I am going to guess (and it's just a guess) that you are going to be waiting in line because:

1. Everyone knows you can book a seat so anyone camping out overnight already has a seat - they just want to be first in.

2. It's on Disney property so some fans are going to want to watch it there

3. They are only going to have Star Wars on all 12 screens therefore making the logistics of getting people in pretty weird

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was a fake IMAX, but thank you for confirming. We won't have a car so the fake AMC IMAX will have to suffice.

I would normally agree with you on not needing assigned seats, but this will be for opening day of force awakens, so I think it will be nice to walk up 20 minutes before it starts and know I have my seat saved.

I don't care about being first into the theater. I just want my assigned seat so I can waltz in 20 minutes before it starts. I've been to these events before and they're usually pretty organized. It shouldn't be a problem. They start letting people in an hour or more before the movie starts.

Are you going to the midnight showing, or the next day? My local AMC, which has assigned seating in all theaters makes everyone line up outside. Even if they start letting people in an hour before, I wouldn't assume that at 20 minutes before you'd be able to walk in for a midnight screening and bypass a line. If it's the next day, I'd still give it 30-35 minutes to allow for crowds. If it's the midnight screening, you might want to call the theater the day before it opens to confirm their procedure.

If you want to see SW in a special theater and you have access to car or can take the Metro. Go to the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

I've worked credentialed in the media at these events (although less than SW) and I would give yourself much more time! It's Star Waaaaaarrrrs (sorry, doing my kid's voice) . As someone with a ticket it's taken me over an hour and that's with premium check-in and seating.
