Odd question about central air?

Whether we are at our NY home or FL home: 73 days, 70 night. Although our NY is two stories and upstairs runs about 5 degrees warmer than downstairs where the thermostat is.

We live in Northwest Florida and keep our a/c set at about 78 or so in the summer. We have a lot of attic insulation and it's very comfortable indoors. In the winter, when the unit runs as our heater, we set it on about 70-72. I hate being cold.

I live in southwest Louisiana . It's hot here and the humidity is worse . We set our unit to 69 at night and 72 during the day if we are home . If everyone is at school/work , we will set it at 74. But no higher - takes too long for the house to cool down if we do.

I was in New Orleans on a business trip in June - and the humidity there was unbelievable. It was hot - there is no denying it was hot - but it is the only time I've felt the need to shower three times a day and switch bras. I learned really fast to use antiperspirant in places that I don't normally do so - bras take a bit to dry if you have to wash them twice a day in a hotel sink - and I don't pack that many of them. I wasn't sure if I was walking down the street or swimming.

Yes - it's ALWAYS like that around here !!! Miserably hot and humid. You sweat just walking from your car into Walmart ! So when we vacation at disney during the summer - it's no big deal to wash bras a couple times a day in the sink- lol. We are already use to that ..

We live in the south, where temps in the summers can stay in the triple digits (Texas). We keep our central air and central heat on 73 degrees year around. The house is only about 7-8 years old and well insulated. We also keep ceiling fans on in the bedrooms and living room year around. They are never cut off (we just change the direction of the blades according to the season--one way in the summer and the other direction to force hot air down in the winter). When it's in the triple digits outside (was 105 degrees one day last week), I want the house comfortable.

My younger son and D-I-L keeps theirs on 72. We've jokingly argued many times over the difference that one degree makes.:rotfl: My elder D-I-L is cold natured, so theirs stays about 78. We burn up over at their house and she freezes in ours.:rotfl:

The size of your bill is going to be more determined by how big your a/c unit is compared to your house (is it big enough, etc- 4 ton or 5 ton) and how well your house is insulated. And somewhat by how old your unit is/how efficient.

If you have a big house but you only have a 3 or 4 ton unit then your unit will be running non-stop to keep your house cool.

I have a 5 ton unit and I keep mine set on 74 during the day in the summer and 72 at night because we like it a bit cooler at night.

In the winter (when our bill is the highest) we keep the heat set on 72 day and night.

Our house is insulated very well and we have a good brand name unit that is only one year old.

I have seen the threads where ppl discuss what they keep their units set on and some ppl keep it super cold in the house during winter and let it get very warm in the house during summer. I won't do that. I am not going to be uncomfortable in my house to save $40.

Now if you move into a very old house that is not insulated well, you have an old unit that is not big enough for the house and the unit runs 24/7 and you have a $500 electric bill, then I might consider changing the settings on the unit.

I would love to live someplace where central sir wasn't needed in a house. Sounds lovely.

We set it for about 74. That does the trick, and unless it's a scorching hot day I can turn it off after a few hours and the house is cool until about supper time. It gets too cold downstairs.
Our house is about 6 years old. I don't know the exact size of our unit, but it's very large. All the neigbouring houses built in the year or two after us have smaller units. They all say their air conditioning doesn't work well and has to run all day. I have to turn mine off because it's gets too cold:confused3

This summer has been unseasonably cool and I haven't really had to run it much at all, but that's not the usual for summer here.
