Odd People at Movie Theaters

I am convinced now that if you are ever in the mood to see a display of odd, unusual, or rude behavior just go to the movies. Every time I go there is always at least ONE family or person that is just, well, odd. Yesterday was no exception.

Now I'm not talking about anything major, just little stuff.

Yesterday my son and I went to see Monster House at the 4:50 showing. The theater was full (of kids mainly) by the time the previews started. I thought to myself "Oh, wonderful, I wonder what bad behavior I will witness." But the kids were all angels!!

About 3/4ths of the way through the movie, though, a family of 4 walks in to the theater. Each one of them is loaded down with a tub of popcorn and large soda and lord knows what else. They all where holding the "boxes" that contain everything. The kids were not small--probably at least 12, maybe even young teens. They immediately walk up to the area that I am sitting in which are the "primo" seats--you know the ones that you only get when you get to the movie before it starts?? So they come up to my row and stand there on the stairs just looking around in disbelief that there are no seats for their family. :confused3 They stood on the stairs for probably 3 minutes and whispered and pointed and shrugged. They then walked down the stairs to the wide aisle that runs across the theater and they stand there for another minute or so in what appears to be disbelief, again, that they can't find any seats. They finally walk through the middle of the theater to the other side and do the same thing. I finally see them take seats in separate areas and sit down. The movie ended about 20 minutes later.

So, what's up with that? I will say, quite honestly, they disturbed a short portion of my viewing time standing there, shrugging, talking, and just being annoying. What do you suppose they were up to? I was thinking maybe they were "movie hopping"? Why would you come to a movie THAT late?

I've actually seen this before but not so late in the movie.

I just think people are so odd. I also think that the movie theater should not be letting people do this, but I guess if they have an actual ticket to that show what more can they do?

:confused3 maybe the movie was showing two theatres and they picked the wrong one?

Well, you think they would have left and gone into the other theater?

Maybe they *did* get there early - - for the next showing? :rotfl2:

That's what I was thinking too. Some people (families) buy tickets for one show and make their way around to see numerous movies once inside. I've seen it happen and I actually know *gasp* someone who does this! ;)

I'll take them over the people who bring babies to the movies and let them cry through the whole thing. And, I'm not talking a kiddie movie -- I'm talking a grown-up type movie (ie: "Crash").

I'm sure I'll get flamed for that, so let me say that I am fine w/you bringing your baby to the movie as long as he/she is quiet. If they cry a little, I can deal -- just don't let them squall through the whole darn movie!!!! When DS was an infant, I'd take him during his nap time. He'd snooze through the whole thing. I always sat in the back of the theatre, close to the door, in case we had to make a quick exit. That was back in the days before stadium seating!! He never made a peep during the movie!!!! Of course, I didn't get to do that for too long b/c his naps started to get shorter!!

I'd also take those folks over those who let their toddlers run up and down the aisle b/c they're bored w/the movie. That is v. distracting!!!! Esp. since the movie isn't a kid's movie to begin with. This happened to me in "The Devil Wears Prada"! Not a kiddie movie, to say the least!!!!

I misread your title and thought it said, Old People at Movie Theatres. I had to open it to see what the problem was with old people at a movie! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

This happened to me once. We went to see a movie and the ticket person sold us tickets for a movie that had already started. We knew we had cut it close and expected the previews to have started. Well we went into the theatre and sat down...we thought the movie had just started. It ended 10 mins later. We were very confused. We checked our ticket stubs, we had asked for the 3pm showing and the gave us the 1:30pm showing. I didn't even think they could sell tickets once the movie was almost over...Maybe that's what happened?

Your post made me laugh. About the only thing this family didn't do wrong was answer their cell phone and carry on a conversation during the movie. (This actually happened recently during a movie I was watching).

I always want to yell at the stragglers "Find a seat and shut up."

What's up with that? I've seen the same thing. These folks arrive way after the movie starts and are amazed there are no prime seats for them! Hello, it's a weekend evening and a very popular film. Don't stand in the aisle and have a loud group argument about the lousy seats that are left. Why do you show up 30 minutes into it? If you want to find a good seat, arrive on time or find a Kevin Costner film to go to!

The vast majority of my movie-going experiences are pleasant and uneventful, but when DH and I went to see The Da Vinci Code, there was a teenager (older, like 15 or 16) behind me running his mouth during all the previews. OK, a little annoying, but no big deal.

But then the feature film came on and he kept talking! He was giving a blow-by-blow of what was going to happen next. I put up with this for 5 or 10 minutes and then turned around and said, "Could you please stop talking?" I never heard another peep out of him, which was gratifying, but when I turned around, I saw he had been talking to his mother! Now wouldn't you think a teenagers MOM would have asked him to stop talking when the movie started?? Do adults actually not know better?? :confused3

I've only had one truly odd experience at a movie theatre.

DH and I went to see "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" for Valentine's Day that year. We were seated next to a group of 4-5 teenage girls, probably 14-15 years old.

Anyway, if you've ever seen this movie, you know that it is hysterical and I was laughing my butt off. At one point, the girl closest to me taps me on the arm.

Me:Wha?
Girl:Sssssh!
Me:Huh?
Girl: You are laughing TOO loud! Ssssh! :furious:
Me: Huh?
Girl:SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSsh! Or else! :furious:
Me:Um...?

After the movie, I told DH what happened and he was like "Whatever. You can't laugh too loudly at a comedy. She was being a dork."

The one that stands out for me is

We went to see LOTR: The Two Towers. We get there fairly early and get good seats, (stadium seating). While we are sitting there we notice the place is filling up super fast. The next thing we notice is there are only two seats left in the whole theatre and people are still filing into it. Those two seats happen to be right next to us. Well who shows up but my "crazy" aunt and a friend. (really she is not the certifiable one, but crazy none the less hence the quotation marks). She and her friend take the last two seats, by us. And people are still coming in. They over sold the showing by at least 50 people. Talk about some very mad costumers. Any way, come to find out my aunt didn't see the first movie and talked to her friend the whole time asking questions. You would think a 40 something year old woman and her friend, (a fairly large man who happens to be a police officer) would know better then to talk non-stop. Well, I tried to shhhh her, but like I said she is "crazy" and decides that I am not worth listening to. I was still able to enjoy the movie since I had lived with her my whole life and had become accustom to her and was able to tune her out. Though I feel sorry for everyone else around us.

And don't ya just love it when they start asking folks in the prime seating area to start shuffling around so they can sit there, too? :furious:
