odd names

Funny family (ours!) names: (mostly old...we have extensive family trees on both sides to cull these from :) )

--Buena Vista (and as the story goes, her vista WASN'T buena!)

--3 brothers with the middle names after the local weather on the days they were born--Clear, Waves, and Gale

--GGGrandmother named "Mourning" (guess her mama really didn't want her!)

--misc. men: Sterling, Barron, Thornton, Alton, Meyer, Talmadge, Hersey, Redin
--misc. women: Penelope, Serana, Lucelia, Temperance, Elmyra, Winnie, Bertie, Wortie, Ollie, Emaline, Elurania

And YES, those are all GIVEN names

Edited to add: I had a "Dorcas" on my hall in college. She didn't like it :( It was an old family name, Greek, I think she said.....

I used to have a girl on my caseload named Fantasia-very appropriate for these boards, and now I guess it is gaining popularity. My mom was a teacher, and in her first class she had a Rationette and her sister's name was Twylagale. They had a brother named Eddy. How did he get so lucky?!
When our first son Cameron was born, people thought that was an odd name. Then when our #2 Douglas came along, they thought that was strange too.

Cameron unusual? When? I worked in day care 1991-1998 and we usually had 2 in each class! It's been popular in the south a long time.

As for Douglas, we have an uncle Douglas :)

Most people look at me funny when I tell them my son's name....like "how could you stick such an old fuddy-duddy name like that on a boy?"

BUT, I always get a big cheer out of you DIS folks......'cause my son's name is WALT! :earsboy:
(Now if only my friends would believe that he really is named after his grandfather!! Really!!)

My father's mother was named Icy. And it fit her very well. :(

My name is normal-Victoria, but my mom's name was a little unusual: Meta, though she went by Mickey.
My Gram's name was Ismene, not a good name at all!! But she wasn't..mean that is. LOL

My dad's name was William Delbert. He made me promise never to name any of my sons Delbert. He told me he just didn't understand why a woman would ever "put that on a baby". (We used William instead for our third son's middle name, which was fitting since my dad died two years before Nathan was born)

Lori P. :)

I am a girl and my name is Kalen (pronounced Kay-lynn). I have seen others around now with various spellings. I am usually confused as a male (until they see me). My son has an "old" name which makes it sort-of unusual Kenneth.

DSIL is Miriam which is unusual to me.

I know 2 Olive's so wouldn't call it unusual. My friens names his son Finley which was unusual at the time but now I know a few baby Finley's. My friend had a baby a few months ago and called him Fynn.

My grandmother was named Daisy...not so weird except her sisters were Iris and Violet....guess their mom liked flowers!!
In School We had a girl named Lisa...but her last name was Misa....we had a boy named Justin and his last name was tyme....what do some parents think when naming their kids!!

My grandmother's name was Sina. I wanted to name my second daughter Sina Jane but was told absolutely not by my husband. She ended up Samantha Jane (Sam)

My first name is Amadeus. Would that be considered as odd?

My ex-MIL was named Olive Pearl and she actually had a sister named Dorcus. They also had 2 other sisters named Inez and Lola Mae. Ex-BIL's name was Cecil Armond.

I knew a girl when I was in the 6th grade (many years ago) named Dorcus......she went by DeDe.

Bless her heart! Thank God no one called her DORCUS!:scared:

My name is Auriel (pronounced Oar-e-l), We have a great nephew called Malachi & another called Levi.

No need to tell you where they got the names from hey?

Both have brothers called, Benjamin & Zachary.

Then my own DS's are Jadyn & Lachlan.:D

A couple of my friends actually named Kalen (exact same spelling) and both are girls. One live in Australia and the other in Toronto.

My SIL had a friend in high school named Seventy, and her sister's name was Omega. A little girl at our church is named Naomi, which isn't a bad name, just odd for a baby around here. My son is Isaac, which also isn't common here, but not really odd. I used to work in the admitting dept at a hospital, and a 15-yo girl had a baby, and since she "didn't know she was pregnant" and didn't have a name picked out, she named it Hercules Gonzalez and I have no idea what the last name was. Poor kid, I'd have waited a day or two and picked a different name.

I used to work with a Tossie. And for a while dated a guy named Fazio. My cousin has a dd, Raven Myth--Raven I have heard but not Myth for name.

Okay here's my list:

My great grandmothers name was Olive-- so I've been used to that one.

My sisters SIL had a baby boy last fall and named him ZEPHER.

Then DH's family reuses a name to death-- like there are 6 of each name it seems like. Boys are all pretty normal-- girls are a bit different: We have ILA, Eunice, Leotta, Idella, and Douglina, and there are many of them from young to old w/ these names. I had never heard any of them until I met DH.

There aren't a lot of Michelinas around. I hated having a different name as a kid because I could never buy any of that souvenier stuff that has your name on it. I like it now though, I pretty much know that no one else will have my screen name :)
