Any tips for travel around Columbus Day? We're planning to go next October and we were thinking about going for my birthday, the 11th, but could easily change dates if it's a more crowded time.

Was anyone there around that time this year?

Yes. Don't do it! Columbus Day is packed and so is the weekend before it. I would wait until the week after and go. We were there the Tuesday after Columbus Day and noticed a big difference in crowds. As the week went on the crowds lessened. I would never go to WDW during any holiday unless I planned on staying at the resort the whole time.

We spent not quite 2 weeks there including Columbus Day weekend. It definitely got more crowded on the weekend and the holiday. It was still managable, but not as nice as the previous week - or days following Columbus Day.

Next year, our plans are to go at that same time (my dds' b-days are on the 7th and 15th). To avoid the crowds, we plan to take a trip to Ft. Lauderdale over the weekend instead of staying on site. (Our two other reasons: We have relatives there and going away on the weekend makes our DVC points go farther.)

Unless I'm mistaken, someone mentioned that the Food and Wine Fest. is starting earlier in Oct. next year. It hadn't started by the time we left last year, so I don't know how that impacts the crowds.

We went this year Columbus Week and I'd say if you are fexible, absolutely change for the next week instead. Evidently this is now a BIG week for schools to be out, a fall break of some kind and this was the first year for it. we were there the 11th thru 18th and it was much more crowded than we had expected. The reason I choose that time was in part because I didn't expect the crowds.

We still had a wonderful time, though.
