My husband & I would like to take a 3 day cruise (October 10, 2002) with our daughter to celebrate her 8th birthday. I was wondering if anyone has cruised in October before & how bad is the weather? (I know Aug-Nov are supposed to be hurricane season.) I'm not too worried about not being able to go ashore at the ports; mostly about how much the ship sways. (Nervous would-be first-time cruiser here!)

I'm sure I'll have tons more questions as time passes...thanks for any advice:)

We cruised on the Wonder this past october, the weather was warm in the 80's, sunny and just perfect. Seas were light waves. The ship is good size and unless the seas are rough you won't feel to much motion. The Bahamas are usually pretty calm unless there is a hurricane building. There also were not too many kids on the ship so the kids clubs were not overcrowded and my son had a great time. He is 6. It would be so special for your daughter to have her birthday on the ship. Make sure the head waiter knows it is her birthday she will receive a special birthday pin.
This was our kids first cruise so we gave them bonnine, with our Dr. permission and they also had no problem with seasickness.
Hope you have a great time.

We did our first cruise last October (10/4 Wonder). OUr weather was perfect--we did 4 days prior at WDW where the weather was great for touring--almost too chilly for water parks, but sooo great for walking around. The weather on board was equally great. Nassau was in the 60's and felt a little warm, CC was great, although the water felt a little cool at first. We had "wavelets" the whole trip, and felt nothing. OUr Jan. trip we had up to 4 feet seas and still no problems with motion sickness. I am hoping for the same weather next Oct. (we're on the 10/3) along with all members of my immediate family (none of whom have ever sailed).

I have had the best weather luck in October on both the Magic and Wonder...absolutely perfect weather. :)

I cruised last October 6th on the 7 day. The seas were very rough. There were I think 2 tropical storms that later turned into hurricanes, and that changed our itinerary BIG time. ( the changes were GREAT though.. ) We missed St. Maarten, instead went to San Juan. We went to Castaway Cay twice, first on Sunday, second on Friday. On day was SO bad we stayed in our room all day. We had like 18-20 foot swells. It was AWEFUL. Needless to say, I will not do a late hurricane season cruise again. I need smooth sailing, or I worry too much. We're going next June 2003. If you are bothered by rough seas, your risking an unenjoyable trip. If you are not bothered by them, go for it and have fun. You save ALOT of money going that time of year.

Yikes Wonderwoman! 20 ft???
We did the 3 day on Oct 12, 2000. The first night was very rocky. We had 14 ft seas, and saw quite a few people 'getting sick" all over. Dinner was practically empty that night. After that is was smooth sailing and more beautiful weather. In Nassau it was warm and partly sunny. CC was even warmer and sunnier.

We sailed on the 7-day Magic last Oct. (13th-20th). The weather was gorgeous, but the seas were sometimes a little rough. Not bothersome-rough, not seasick-rough, but a little bumpy!

It's actually kinda nice at night, lying in bed to a gentle rocking of the ocean...

You'll only get seasick if you tell yourself you will! Just go with it, enjoy yourself, and maybe take along some "Simply Motion" just in case. My 9 yr old DD felt a little woozy the first night, so I cut one of those tablets in half for her. She took that, took a nap for about 45 minutes, and felt great for the rest of the cruise!!

We saw very little rain, temps in the 80's, and had a beautiful day on Castaway Cay. We go again this Oct. 12th. Can't wait!

ENJOY

'Beano'

Thanks for all the advice:) The one thing I should have mentioned is that my daughter has a problem with feeling queasy...not throw up-queasy, just uncomfortable-queasy...in the car on long trips. We haven't tried any other mode of travel with her yet, and we've never tried giving her any motion sickness medicine. Do you think that a little of the Simply Motion will help her on the cruise? (Maybe it would help her on the long car trips, too...)

I know I sound like a worry wart...I just want this to be fun! (Fun enough so that my husband wants to do it again & again:) )

I have to second BeanoC's report of the 10/13 Magic cruise. Monday had the highest seas, and Captain Hans took us west of Puerto Rico to calmer waters on the way to St. Marten. It was great to see the lights of San Juan at night as we passed the island.

As a first time cruiser, I was only concerned one time which turned into a comedy thanks to a great CM. Monday afternoon I was in Studio Sea attending a DVC presentation. They bring a computer on a rolling cart for the presentation. Well as the ship came upon a bigger swell, the cart began to roll as the ship swayed to the right. The doors to the room had also been left open, and they slammed shut. Us novice cruisers, looked around thinking, "Why is everyone acting so nomal, the ship is tipping over!"  Of course, the ship was no where close to tipping over, but it felt that way to our inexpereinced minds. The facilitator of the event never missed a beat as he hurried to stop the rolling computer and continued the presentation, adding that no one gets away from him at a DVC presentation. He had us laughing so hard, we didn't notice anything else.:D

Later in the gift shop, one of the CM's mentioned that a few items fell off the shelves.
