October is here!!! A Semi-live TR!!! Our Oct 7-14 trip to the world!

Just read through your PTR! Your plans look great. We are very similar in our trip planning - obsessing and worrying over what park to go to and what restaurants to eat at and when. I think you are going to have a great trip, especially now that you have that extra day added!

Where are you getting this information? I've never heard this before, and a quick google search shows it as having always been November, including the original Thanksgiving with the pilgrims.

I think Canadian Thanksgiving and US Thanksgiving are two entirely separate holidays that just happen to share a name.

Well who knows...but it's all about turkey and fixins lol

Yes. And that decision truly helped the US (and the World) dig out of the Great Depression. By linking the 2 big holidays, his administration slowly but surely created a spending juggernaut. Today's Black Friday, anyone? But for purists, early to mid October remains Thanksgiving because that is when the harvest should be in and the farms redied in the agrarian farm communities of the North East. And that is when we give thanks for having an abundant harvest that, with the help of our neighbours, should see us through the long hard winter to come.

Kinda makes sense. It sure is a spending juggernaut now that's for sure. I'm just happy to have a holiday in Mid-October lol

Hey thanks for joining in!! Yup...lots of obsessing going on in these parts...mostly fun...and every time I get stressed about it I have to remind myself "it's a Disney vacation...it will be fun no matter what we end up doing"

We had a wee bit of excitement around these parts last night...well depends what you consider exciting...though it isn't Disney related...thought I'd share.

My DS (age 12) accidentally dropped one of his ADHD pills on the floor at breakfast yesterday and didn't tell me. Last night around 7pm, I found the half chewed pill on the floor and realized that...the dog must have gotten it.

I immediately phoned our usual vet office, which was closed, and referred me to an emergency vet, who referred me to a poison control for pets phone number...who referred me to go to the emergency vet. Snickers (the dog) was acting relatively ok...but was not quite herself. She was panting a lot and a bit clingier than usual.

I figured her odd behaviour was because we were in the middle of a gigantic thunder and lightening storm and that freaked her out - though she has never even noticed storms before. But then when I found the mangled pill on the floor it all made sense. DH was at a movie with DS and DD was at a sleepover...so I rushed off with Snickers to the emergency vet.

They checked her out and though she seemed ok...they recommended she stay the night so they could monitor her, because it is a stimulant medication and even if she only ingested a little of it, it could affect her heart rate and blood pressure and other vital stuff. Thankfully this morning the vet said she is doing well and my mom is going to pick her up shortly...since I am home with no car because DH is off doing some IronMan related training (what else is new) Not that I'm bitter or anything....deeep breaths...think about Disney....

Anyway...I can't wait to have her back...It's only been one night but I missed her a lot...she usually sleeps right next to me!

Hope all is well with your pet. Dogs are usually pretty resilient. My neighbour's dog jumped up on the breakfast table and ate 4 chocolate Easter bunnies when they weren't looking. He was OK. My (now late) labrador swallowed a plastic poop bag whole when he was a puppy. He simply inhaled the whole thing before I could grab it out of his mouth. He too was OK. My neighbour's new puppy (King Shepherd) ate a wild rabbit whole in their backyard. He was fine. The bunny not so much. My brother's dog managed to eat 4 huge garter snakes whole at one sitting. She was fine. Just frightened her family when they found her lying down digesting with a huge snake tail still hanging out of her mouth. Eek! Dogs do the darndest things. Best wishes!

OMG the snake!! Ahhh what a story!! But yes, thanks...Snickers is home now and seems to be doing fine so hopefully there will be no more ill effects. They had her on some IV and a sedative to counteract the effects of the stimulant medication that she ingested so she is a bit bugged by the place where the IV was on her leg...but other than that she seems ok.

That would have scared me to death. I'm glad the pup is okay Did your DS tell you he didn't take his meds?

That's the thing. He didn't remember. Well he has ADHD so he's pretty scattered anyway lol. But the thing is he told me I forgot to give him his meds and I remembered putting the pill on his plate. I just thought he didn't remember taking it - because you know when something is so routine and you do it every day...you might not even remember doing it?? So I figured that is what happened and he had actually taken the pill himself and forgotten...not dropped it on the floor...sigh. So Snickers got it. And my DS didn't have his meds...thing is...his behaviour actually wasn't all that different yesterday...so that's something to think about...as I'm always questionning how much the meds are doing for him anymore. He has been on them for a few years and the doctors always said that perhaps when he gets closer to puberty he might no longer need them...so...something to ponder on another day...sigh. But yes...so glad the dog is ok!!

Yikes, I would have been so scared! Glad things turned out okay in the end!

Oh I was very scared. She is a member of the family...and she is MY therapy dog...in addition to being an actual Therapy Dog as well :) I was very worried about her and hated leaving her at the emergency vet for the night. But she is home now and there have been lots of doggie cuddles today!!

Yup. We still have the original North American Thanksgiving date mid October. The traditional Harvest Home. I believe FDR changed the US Thanksgiving date to November during the Great Depression in the hopes of digging out of the Depression by jump starting the American economy via sparking higher consumer spending leading into the Christmas season.

Where are you getting this information? I've never heard this before, and a quick google search shows it as having always been November, including the original Thanksgiving with the pilgrims.

Check the dates for USA's thanksgiving prior to FDR...
heck go back as far as Thanksgiving in the States since Lincoln proclaimed it in 1863 and it's always been in November
FDR moved Thanksgiving from the last Thursday of November to the second last Thursday.
The intent was to help with the depression, by increasing the length of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This gave sellers a longer period to sell their goods.

But it wasn't always in November. Sometimes it was in July. Other times are all over the map.
But if you consider it as an annual holiday, as Lincoln decreed, then it's always been in November.

They checked her out and though she seemed ok...

Glad to hear that the pup's okay!
Our dog eats anything that doesn't move away from her mouth quickly enough.
:sad2:

Ha...who knew...there would be a debate about Thanksgiving LOL...Interesting either way!

Yes...so does my dog since she is on low cal food...she is pretty quick to eat anything that comes near her snout...

Wow, definitely a lot of excitement going on at your house. Glad to hear snickers is doing ok.

One of mine at 20 vitamins the day we were leaving for Disney two trips ago. Thankfully since there was no iron it it the vet said no major cause for concern, but I was holding my breath till the dog sitter got to the house and confirmed all was well. Definitely scary

I'm glad Snickers is okay! ADHD meds are definitely not something a dog should be eating, so I'm glad you were able to get her to the vet and everything turned out fine.

Gah...that is brutal that it happened right before your trip!!

Yeah definitely lesson learned. I think from now on I will hand the pill to my DS instead of putting it on his plate with breakfast...and I will pay more attention to actually seeing him take it!

Glad your dog is ok!

One of my dogs has a stomach of steel - he's eating socks, baby rabbits, plastic, metal, lizards and etc and he's only a 30 pound cocker/doxie mix. It always comes out fine in the end ;)

The other one eats something funky and he's ill for two days.

Catching up on your plans. I'm enjoying the debate about Thanksgiving. Glad to see @pkondz as the voice of reason - US Thanksgiving has always been in November. :goodvibes

Your exciting night sounds so familiar. One night last year we returned home to see that the puppy ate two pill bottles that contained the older dogs thyroid meds and some leftover painkillers from her spay. :scared1: An emergency vet visit and $500 dollars later it seemed that she wasn't affected at all. I can totally relate to the terror when it appears that they've poisoned themselves.

My son has ADHD as well. We've tried the meds which really helped his school work but the side effects were prohibitive. We're trying to figure out a solution for him at school and it's been really tough. I guess my point is that I'm sure that the effect on that day was negligible.

Thanks! Yeah I don't think she got too much of the actual meds...but better safe than sorry.

Yikes!! Yes, that must have been scary...not good!! The bill was ridiculous and I'm sure she would have been fine...but I would have had an even more sleepless night worrying....As for my son...yeah no one even noticed lol

So happy your dog is ok, so scary!!!

Thanks and yes...pretty scary...glad it's over!
